There is a fine line between being unorthodox and being out of control.
Tony is far, far at the end of that spectrum.
He's never actually taken the time to improve and it seems like nobody in his team can even point out any flaws and get him to switch some things up.

Let's call a spade a spade - Tony is arrogant. He does what he wants, how he wants and is fully emersed in his own ideology.

From a P's and Q's standpoint, he's been the same exact fighter since TUF. This entire time he's fought the same way and relied on toughness, cardio and volume to get him through his opponents.

Had he seriously wanted to improve, he could've taken the leap to reach out to some boxers, or go to Thailand for a change, etc.

Tony is stuck in his ways and it's a shame because he has the work ethic and mental fortitude to be a dominant champ.

I don’t think he’s too much of anything.

His mentality and attitude lead him to one of the longest win streaks in the history of the ufc in an extremely cut throat division. He will have a similar legacy to a guy like DC. He was always incredible but never #1, and he is allowed to be confident when he’s that successful.

I don’t understand why everyone is writing his career off as a failure because it didn’t have a storybook ending, as if anyone in MMA does have a storybook ending.

He has no game plan. He just goes in and fights. Eddie Bravo said something like "Tony has never gone into a fight and shot for a takedown even when he knows he has a significant advantage on the ground. He's gonna go out there and strike and whatever happens happens. That's just who Tony is."

Also I think Tony is surrounded by yes men or he just can't take criticism.

If we're taking about his standup,he's been the exact same fighter since TUF, which was in 2011. So, zero improvement in striking for a decade. Think about that.

Just because you say something doesn’t make it true, besides that, even if he didn’t improve it, he was still effectively out striking a large majority of his opponents so what’s the issue?

Guy has had an extremely successful mma career. I think the flak he's catching currently is just the reaction to him losing after years of listening to his biggest supporters and trolls calling him the GOAT and "uncrowned" champ at LW. Tony is just on the other side of the coin currently.

And he didn't tear his leg up. I give that credit to the sunglasses and whoever set up the the camera cable.

Why is his BJJ so rated again? Is being pretty good off his back where all this came about because the rest is shwag as far as I can tell

he looked like a PTA mom in there against Do Bronx

It’s just crazy. I never thought he’d catch this much flak. We see a lot of over reactions on this website after things like this. But Tony’s has been pretty over the top

Yes, anything I say is my opinion, good observation brother.
He's taken a shit ton of damage throughout that winning streak though.
What good is "effectively out striking your opponents " when you don't actually make improvements to not get hit as much. There is a big difference between outlanding somebody on the feet while taking damage and actually dominating them.

DC was a two division Champ, I think they will be viewed very differently..

I think another part of it is that people aren't giving Oliveira much respect. To them he's still the same guy that got tapped by Pettis (in a fight he was dominating before a slip up) and got smashed by Felder's elbows.

Of course it is, but you’re saying it like it’s a fact. You’re not supporting your points adequately. If you’re going to make such an extreme statement you should support it with logic and reasoning, not just whip out your opinion and flop it on the table and ask everyone to respect it.

It’s just a difference in fight styles mate. When have we ever held “wars” against fighters? If that’s how he wins, that’s how he wins. There’s certainly less impressive ways to win an mma fight than getting into a war and coming out on top.

Same thing I see, Tony got in his own way with his know it all attitude. Now he's closer to 40 and shop worn. Lost his best years to ego.

Edit: and of course people defend Tony cause "Warz!!!", no one is saying the guy isn't entertaining, only that he blew his chance at being who he wanted to be by being egotistical and not improving. The worst part is you know Tony knows where he's deficient, but he's too proud to change. Same Helwani episode where he said Justin should thank him for being interim champ, Tony stated that he "coaches coaches" and he teaches a pad curriculum that is better than average boxers. Also something along the lines that he could be textbook is he wanted to.
