Tony Cecchine - Anyone ever roll with him?

He made a clear distinction between a "hook" and a "painhold" (what Jiu Jitsu guys do, he says). So a hooker must be more of a crippler than a guy who does submissions. According to Cecchine that is, which is the only place I've heard what the definition of a "hook" is. So take that for what it's worth from me, I suppose.

Bro, jut because Cecchine said it doesn't mean its true, not my a long shot!! he was embelishing in an era of not much being proven in order to sell DVD's.

From what I read in a book about catch, Hooking is slang for catch wrestling to other wrestlers back in the day. It differentiated them from the guys who just did show moves/pro wrestling/wwf stuff or sport/folkstyle/greco/etc. A guy who could hook, knew hooking, etc

That's pretty much it. It wasn't particularly widespread; certain guys used the term, others didn't. When Thesz came out with his autobiography, "Hooker", a lot of old school guys said they weren't familiar with that terminology.

Honestly, I can't imagine the type of people that did catchwrestling would really be into a term like "hooker" unless it didn't have that meaning back then

It was more of a carnival term. A hooker was like a 'policeman' or 'enforcer' to protect the promoter from losing money, if some wrestlers came in to the challenge matches and tried clean up, money-wise. If the promoter's wrestler was losing, the hooker was brought in to finish the challenger as quickly as possible in something like a "Double your money" offer, to ensure that no money was lost and only made.

But it also provides the etymology for the move 'heelhook'.

this is hilarious. Not one person on this thread has ever trained with Tony and yet we have all this commentary. Wow.

Get over it, you put stuff out on the internet, you sell stuff to people, expect to have questions asked and people wonder how legit you are, especially if you are questioning others styles and ideas:eek:

Same way in Judo, same way in BJJ, same way in working out, same way in wrestling, same way in just about anything where one person is claiming to be a professional who is skilled enough to sell his trade to others, ya dig?

Do you just take everything at face value or do you make sure the stuff you are putting out for is in fact worthwhile and legit?

A hooker was a guy the carnivals kept around in case their wrestlers were made to look bad in challenge matches by a member of the audience (who might be a ringer of sorts in disguise looking to make money off of the betting going on).

Carnival promoters needed guys who could finish matches quickly to make sure The House Always Wins, if you get my drift.

Some Hookers became Policemen who were basically used to beat legit wrestlers who were a threat to the champion. The promoter would often want the most marketable champion to remain champion and having Policemen made sure the champ rarely had tough fights.

Oh, so that's where that infamous wrestling mentality and behavior comes from.
