Simon Boxall from the University of Southhampton reported that but said it was second hand knowledge and he didn't know if it was an auto generated ping or sent by the crew. Of course all of the media outlets were looking for anything to report and latched onto that. Some may have embellished it. It might be determined in the future as the information is sorted out. Just like the Navy hearing a sound that could have been the implosion at the time the sub went missing but they had no way to be certain.

I’d say the Navy did indeed pick up the sound of the implosion. Don’t know they knew immediately what it was but I’m sure they put it together pretty quick. Probably before the above water crew reported it.

I'm pretty sure the waivers will win out here. From what I've read, they were very direct in communicating all the potential issues. Almost like they formed the waivers around it being a renegade operation that couldn't pass regulations. It's apparently in plain English that the vessel was "experimental", and that you were basically signing your life away. The vessel is not actually listed as a legit sub of any kind, and it's all basically some fly by the seat of your pants kind of operation.

Doesn't really matter, though. Ocean Gate's funding ended today. Any money they might owe after a lawsuit, they won't have by the time it takes to sort it all out. The whole company is effectively dead as of today. Ain't no more carbon fiber subs going down there.

I suspect it's a moot point as the CEO is dead and likely the company with him so there is nobody to sue.

In all fairness I’ve seen a lot about the boat of migrants. I’d say the reason that it is/was such a big story is less about the migrants and more about the fact that the calls for help were ignored which kind of goes against what is regarded as the “rules” of the sea. There’s has been quite a few ‘mayday’ calls ignored this year when it comes to migrant boats. Granted the news has been nothing on the scale of this billionaire sub story.

I don't think there is a conspiracy involved but apparently the Navy did detect the implosion days before it was announced. That's pretty much fact at this point.

The news reports say the listening devices recorded it. No mention is made if anyone actually heard it until naval personnel went back and checked their logs after the submersible was reported missing. They still wouldn't know for sure though whether it was the Titan, so they had to launch the search and rescue.

Stockton by all accounts was a charismatic person and paying 500k it is fair to assume he thought that he would get at least the technical best possible sub for this ,stress tested by experts. Suborbital flights cost the same.

We all know more because now everyone is coming out and talk about the deficits of this project in the media . Wasn't like that before.

If anyone had told me before someone who had designed an airplane ,was now selling trips to Titanic, I would have thought that he had included all the expertise available.

James Cameron comes across as an insufferable douchebag. I guess I never noticed. The rest of the media coverage has been decent (outside of the oxygen countdown on one of those new news sites). Experts made it clear that chances of survival were slim, but many people already knew it wasn’t going to be a great outcome. Sure, I get the talk about it being overblown (it was), yet we haven’t had a similar story that I can remember.

RIP to those lost. Clearly, as has been reported, the 19 year old…I just don’t know what to say. He wanted to be there for his father. The people in charge should’ve stepped in, really.

Stockton Rush is dead; there won’t be a grand indictment, litigation or some form of justice. From the videos of him — the ones that were running all week — it appeared that he was someone who cared a great deal about ‘legacy’, and he saw himself as some sort of crusader, being a catalyst for innovation, adventure and the future. How much of that was marketing bollocks? It could be a lot of what we saw from him, at least in video form. Still, his legacy is much, much darker now. Not only did he reach the national consciousness, he was an international new story.

We don’t know everything. I don’t want to condemn him outright, but it isn’t looking good.
