News Titanic Tours Submersible missing in atlantic ocean

They probably knew it imploded but they couldn't say for sure. If there was even a small chance they were still alive then you have to say you did all you could do.

However, I could buy the media downplaying that fact and building up the rescue operation. It created a sense of urgency and the need for constant updates. It worked too. Literally the first time I've regularly checked in on the news since quarantine

However there were two releases to the public of "ooooh I can hear them banging on the inside of the sub down there" with an audio clip and basically no mention of the actual obvious implosion of the sub until the 96 hours of imaginary oxygen were gone.
That part wasn't sosus, that was separate

James Cameron didn’t say anything til after they found the wreckage. Why didn’t he speak sooner? He also said he was hoping agains hope that it didn’t implode. No one was 100% and going to make that call is all I’m saying. 99.999…% certain? Probably.
He talked about it while they were still searching and hadn't confirmed the implosion yet. I only remember that because of the South Park memes about him

The navy wasn’t 100% on it and remember, it wasn’t reported missing for another 6 or so hours after they lost contact.
How fucked up would it be if they announced it imploded on Monday and called off a search and rescue op only to have the sun wash up on a beach with 5 dead bodies in it a couple months from now.

Navy didn't say shit because they're not the entity responsible for SAR...the USCG is...so why even speak on things they aren't even close to being a subject matter expert on...and we go until survivability is near zero...

..hell when that anphib assault vehicle capsized a few years ago off the coast of California they flew a CG LT(that's O-3 LT to you Grunts, Jarheads and Airdales) to run the search Ops...from a Navy vessel because that's our job and we do it better.

I’m not too surprised that they didn’t announce the implosion sound. They heard it, went and looked the next day, and found it in the exact spot. There’s always a 0.001% chance that the sound was something else, so they sent some boats and planes as some sort of protocolary response, because you never know for sure. Once they found the sub it was undeniable that they were dead, so that’s when they gave the press conference with certainty that the thing was gone. If they had announced the implosion sound before finding the sub, they would’ve been bombarded with questions asking if the people were dead or not, which they couldn’t have answered with complete certainty.

As for the infamous knocking sounds, it seems like this was leaked first by Rolling Stone magazine, it was presented as an email “obtained” by Rolling Stone:

https://www.rollingstone.com/cultur...e-missing-searchers-heard-banging-1234774674/

It wasn’t an official communication put out by any relevant agency. My guess is maybe someone leaked this to the magazine off the record in exchange for money or something, and then it was spread by other outlets and got sensationalized, because that’s what the news does with everything. But it might not have been considered that important internally.

Which were from a different source. Also shipwrecks are quite noisy. I don't know what you are confused by, unproven info and false leads are very common in large scale searchs.

this kinda thing is really rather sad and unfortunate and does not reflect well on this well-known corporation :

probably just the work of one maverick staff-member but even so....... poor taste.

Well at least nothing embarrassing has ever happened for Subway.

This story could have been flipped into the aerospace sector and the same talking points could be made.

There are no regulatory bodies ensuring safety in exploratory ventures so dangerous it should make your head spin. People knew (or should have known), the highly increased risk of death by partaking in such an activity.

Hears a video from 10 months ago showing what happens to materials under pressure from a hydraulic press including carbon fiber, titanium and acrylic.

I find these kinds of videos fascinating. I watched one a while ago where they did a similar array of tests on different brands of denim jeans, to test how easily they would tear, puncture, etc. Sounds dumb but was interesting to watch.

They couldn't not have. Those waivers are fucking wild.

Thanks for the video, I like these a lot.

I knew carbon fiber would be down there, but I didn't realize it was that bad

carbon fiber is very strong in CERTAIN directions. Basically it's excellent at containing high internal pressures, and it IS lightweight and if used for the correct application it is very good.
- it's just not uniformly strong for all purposes or applications.

Different tools for different jobs, is essentially it.
