Tires are so wasteful

You should if it's actually been driven on while very deflated to inspect for damage(see my first post here, post #68). If you're someone that actually pays attention and inspected the tire once your TPMS light turned on, then yeah, you can get by with just throwing a string plug in it.

Never had an issue from my experience

Don't have to remove the tire from the wheel when plugging tires
Yeah but his post said his wife bought 2 new tires, so I assume they mounted those on the wheels, and then he told her to bring the 2 old tires home and he plans on plugging them and then putting them back on. So I think he has to mount them.

I wonder if a tire shop would mount them for him or if they think it's too much of a liability

Can't say for sure maybe it's just me but the details are unclear

Get those tires patched up instead

Not too mention Tire Fires which burn so hot releasing tons of toxic chemicals and runoff. Many countries burn them or dump the in the ocean.

pfft, try buying racing tires.
the ones for my car are $425 A PIECE!

and they only really last one season,
doh

Just to add onto this this, lug nuts cost $5 each. Resale.
Its not the lugs that snapped. Why would you even imagine that they could? Despite him saying the lugs snapped it was clearly the bolts.

Why can’t you just replace one tire anyway? What happens if the treads aren’t even?

You would have thought that after well over a century, they would have created at least a more durable or longer lasting form of tire. Then again, tire companies would start going out of business so that wouldnt be good for greedy companies.

Read up on the concept of “planned obsolescence”.

I have a screw in my tire, and it's too close to the sidewall to be patched. So I'm supposed to throw away a perfectly good tire that had another 20k miles of life on it.

But then you're not supposed to just replace one tire. Because now you have uneven tread, so you're actually supposed to replace all your tires at once. Although the more honest tire shops will at least tell you that you can get away with only replacing 2 at a time, both front or both rear, but never just 1 tire at a time.

So because of 1 screw I have to at least throw away 2 good tires?

Seems super wasteful to me. If we were back in the days when they used inner tubes then you could keep your tires until they wear out. Just replace the tubes.
Tires. Can't live with 'em. Can't live without 'em.

Thats when Cthulhu appears and you will have to sacrifice a small child to him.
Never ever drive a car with uneven threads.

The Cats of Ulthar, apparently plug tires really cheap........
