Tim Sylvia in his prime

No one would rank timmay ahead of jds or Cain or werdum in terms of ufc career. He had a statistic in terms of defenses. That’s all.
But That’s all that matters! The other guys you mentioned all failed miserably to capture and defend a title as well in an older and more shopworn division. Do you go around saying yeah Tom Brady won all those super bowls but that’s all, overall Steve young, Rodgers and Vick were better QBs ?

That Tim Sylvia was well past his prime, and he sort of got blitzed ala Houston Alexander/Keith Jardine. Its really not fair to draw too many conclusions based on something like that imo.
Funny how Timmeh peaked after Fedor and also fizzled before Fedor too lol Timmeh prime was 12 months long yet Fedors was a decade long. Something doesn’t add up

Lol that's all that matters. What matters most are the names on your record and when you beat them.

Tim's best wins are Arlovski and Rodriguez. Stipe had much, much better quality and more of it.
Stipe beat men from the Timmeh era. Most of those oldies were fighting in Timmehs era too. Name one good young in their prime fighter that Stipe ever beat? I can’t

You seem to over look the when you beat them part. Please name one good fighter Stipe beat that was young and in their prime. There are none!!

With Stipe years past his prime, Timmeh would surely be undisputed champion…

Tim had a great jab, KO power and knew how to use his size.

He had issues with his back from the Randy fight onwards but he was a tough SOB.

He's massively underrated on these boards but I could see him being very competitive with someone like Volkov or Black Beast.

I could see him knocking both of those guys clean out. Especially Black Beast.

How is laughable? You think the heavyweight division is better now than it was 6 years ago?
i was talking about the timmay era. compared to 6 years ago? not sure. was a very transitional time as cain and jds and arlovski were really fading but still at the top.

lol. it's not all that matters. again, noone really considers timmay the 2nd greatest ufc hw, and noone believed stipe was passing timmay. and instead of referencing tom brady, maybe you should be referencing people who won titles in the cfl, usfl, aba etc.

More like the Cain era. Sylvia era was Paul Buentello types.

I'm curious as to why Fedor gets so much hate for losing to Hendo when Nog lost to him as well. Nog won a rematch but Hendo went 2-1 against Fedor and Big Nog. Both of which should be in anyone's top 10 of greatest Heavyweight fighters of all time. Hendo had wins in 3 different weight classes. He won a UFC tournament, Pride middleweight, Pride Welterweight & Strikeforce Light heavyweight titles! He's won of the best MMA fighters of all time.

I think it's a stretch to call Hendo one of the best HWs of all-time...like a huge one lol. He only has 2 wins at HW, albeit two amazing wins...unless he has some regional or low tier wins early on to add to that.

But I definitely agree that Hendo is lowkey underrated all-time and is a great. It's just that he cannot be ranked that high because he failed to ever win a UFC belt (and it's not arbitrary) or even the Strikeforce MW belt against Shields, after winning the UFC "tourney" then leaving for SF or something....blurry memory on that.

People mostly rate Arlovski and Mir ahead of Sylvia ffs

So basically you admit Fedor would have been UFC champion at the time... so stfu and stop hating.

lmao, your end game in this "debate" was to get me to admit something I stated right out of the gates. Thank you, we have all become more intelligent now. We can finally put aside all GOAT talks and HW/Fedor discussions.

Contender in this HW division doesn't say much.

You say possible champion though, about a guy who got one punch murdered by a boxer, when Ngannou and Lewis are in the division...
are you saying Derrick Lewis and naganou boxing is on par with Mercer’s. Ray Mercer who sparked Sylvia, sparks both those guys as well easily. Heavyweight striking is atrocious.

It's unfortunate that Sylvia became kind of a punchline in the MMA community, because we're talking about a 2x UFC HW champ who racked up a couple defences (which is rare in the HW division). Battled back from adversity (having his arm snapped, getting embarrassed by Arlovski in the 1st fight) and worked his way back to that 2nd title run.

If you look at that 2002-2006 run, he was a true force. For a guy who was not blessed with much in terms of natural athleticism and coordination, he did pretty damn good for himself. That Couture fight was the beginning of the end for him.

I don't know if he'd make the top 5 today, but I think he'd certainly be top 10, and could potentially present a tough night for anyone.
