A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the new coronavirus, in what is believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the U.S. or a tiger anywhere, federal officials and the zoo said Sunday.

I mean it's a zoonotic disease. How is this surprising? In Canada they recommend to separate yourself from your pets if you get covid 19 or suspect that you have it.

The virus must have mutated to infect them (mutated to attach to cat protein receptors), so the only copies of that mutated virus exist within those big cats. As long as they didn't have any contact with feral cats (sometimes they get into zoo enclosures) prior to people noticing the infection, then the strain shouldn't have had the opportunity to jump to new hosts and it will disappear.
