Throwback to when Matt Serra shook up the MMA world

The textbook definition of a fluke win.

Definitely the biggest championship upset in MMA history. Nothing even comes close to it.

I remember Matt Hughes fans were soo happy when he lost.

Sadly this is the day where GSP would never take an un calculated risk ever again.

Georges was clearly the more talented fighter against Matt Hughes in their first match, I believe he was just a bit inexperienced and just got caught in that armbar. GSP truly showed he was on another level in the rematches. Both losses molded GSP into a better fighter and helped mold him into one of the GOATs

That wasn't really a freak though, Karo very nearly subbed GSP as well and I think his submission game clearly did lag behind his striking and wrestling at that point although I think that loss with probably the motivation for him to focus more on that area and he'd clearly improved by the 3rd fight.

I think its somewhat the same with Serra, I don't think it was a freak for Matt to land that punch as it was say for Fujita to rock Fedor(although Fujita did clearly show power in other fights), moreso that GSP allowed him to get in close and brawl because he thought his sub game was the main threat.

It's easily the biggest upset in MMA history. I was at a friend's place with about 6 or 7 other people and they were all huge GSP lovers.......never being a fan of him myself I played the Serra card, shit talking all night and then proceeded to do something akin to the Conor strut after this momentous occasion. Needless to say I barely got out of there with my life!
Serra was a 5’5” bloated LW and had a 7 inch reach disadvantage. Serra didn’t care. He believed in his training and he made prime WW champ GSP tap to strikes.

Greatest upset in MMA history.

It really was the greatest upset ever.
I didn't really like Matt at that point as a fighter, but man he earned my respect that night. Matt Serra never was the greatest at anything, but there is no denying that guys heart and courage.

Of course it should really have been Chris Lytle fighting GSP as Serra beating him in the TUF 'The Comeback Finale' was decidedly dodgy judging.
Serra had no chance against GSP, I can't think of a bigger upset.

Not the biggest fan of Serra victory since he beat my fav fighter but i agree this one is the biggest upset/fluke win in MMA History.
This shows that even journeymans can beat the greatest fighter of all time , what a crazy sport ! Also this is possibly the best thing that happened to GSP career for sure the biggest lesson learned in his career alongside the first Hughes loss never unverestimate or overestimate somebody .

Georges learnt from his losses He balanced the lessons learned from the 2 losses and went undefeated for the rest of his career solidifying himself as the undisputed GOAT.
