Throwback to when Matt Serra shook up the MMA world

It's easily the biggest upset in MMA history. I was at a friend's place with about 6 or 7 other people and they were all huge GSP lovers.......never being a fan of him myself I played the Serra card, shit talking all night and then proceeded to do something akin to the Conor strut after this momentous occasion. Needless to say I barely got out of there with my life!

GSP is my fav but Serra is one of the few people that I'm okay with beating him.

I don't think its a total freak upset though, moreso that GSP had the wrong tactics looking to avoid grappling with Serra which ment Matt could get in close and brawl with him without fearing the takedown, second time around he got him down ASAP and beat him up.

Imagine how insufferable the GSP apostles would be without this to temper their claims.
If both Matt's didn't catch lightning in a bottle, it would be a different story too. Georges was better than both fighters when he lost to them.

Georges was clearly the more talented fighter against Matt Hughes in their first match, I believe he was just a bit inexperienced and just got caught in that armbar. GSP truly showed he was on another level in the rematches. Both losses molded GSP into a better fighter and helped mold him into one of the GOATs

Even @BC acknowledges GSP as the true GOAT . Unlike his buddies @Mason and @20falarVerdades he actually hespects GSP and doesnt bash him.
GSP is good just not better than Silva, Jones or Fedor. Also not convinced he is better than Aldo. Which means GSP is a solid #4 GOAT. Great feat, but again, The Spider and Jones are on a whole other level

Tapping to strikes, in your prime, vs a bloated LW fighter............you either come back and destroy everyone after that or you retire and commit suicide. Glad he came back better.

It really made him into a more dominant and intelligent fighter, he went on to win 30 consecutive rounds over the likes of Hughes, Koscheck, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, etc.
Dominance and intelligence at the cost of dynamism and excitement.

Nicely done TS. I remember going into the first Hughes fight I thought GSP was going to murk him. Was impressed when Hughes pulled off the armbar, so much so that I thought Matt was going to win the rematch.

With the Serra fight of course I thought it was going to be all GSP, when Serra clipped him I couldn't believe it. Even though was a big GSP fan at the time I couldn't help but cheer for Matt at that time.

We all knew what was going to happen in that rematch though.

After Serra, he out-wrestled Kos, crushed Hughes for the second time, corrected his Serra mistake, and absolutely put it on Fitch. Then came Penn II. You think those fights weren’t dynamic and exciting? This whole narrative that GSP suddenly became a boring, safe, point fighter doesn’t hold water. His lack of finishes clouded people’s perceptions.

Of course it should really have been Chris Lytle fighting GSP as Serra beating him in the TUF 'The Comeback Finale' was decidedly dodgy judging.
Serra had no chance against GSP, I can't think of a bigger upset.
Yeap.

People go on about lil nog vs soko. I don't think it actually compares. Serra record was horrible wasnt it? 5-3 or something

Serra was a 5’5” bloated LW and had a 7 inch reach disadvantage. Serra didn’t care. He believed in his training and he made prime WW champ GSP tap to strikes.

Greatest upset in MMA history.
Definitely one of my favorite wins. I love Serra.
