Back in the day i played an old 2.5D one and it was good but too basic. Recently I downloaded a fully 3D snowboarding game and I'm not sure how to feel about it. On the one hand going fast is fun, on the other hand the physics feel all retarded and the cliffs and rocks seem to suck you in like a vacuum. Once you are slowed down it takes a long time to go fast again. It's not like a skateboarding game where it's all about tricks either. I remember my friend had one called snowboarding kids but all i really remember is the music was good. Overall I would say the genre is not my favorite.

Last one I played was the SSX reboot on the 360. It was fun. Weird how they all just kind of went away, though. You used to have consoles competing with each other over these games, with "Coolboarders", "1080 Snowboarding", "Snowboard Kids", "SSX", etc. Before you knew it, they were all gone. They tried to bring "SSX" back, but I'm mostly surprised at "Coolboarders" being tossed in the bin of history. That was a pretty big brand name that even helped sell some systems back in the day, and while I think it did get a bit tired out, it was nothing like the "Tony Hawk" situation, where they just started releasing absolute dogshit for two generations, to the point where people just lost faith. There's still some juice to be squeezed.

Is this the game you got? It's hands down the best snowboarding experience ever made

I have this but oddly can't really get into it. I feel like the genre is dead to me as an adult because I've struggled to get into other snowboarding games. Back in the day I loved Coolboarders on PS1 and could play it for hours and hours, but now snowboarding games just bore me. Same thing with Pro-Wrestling games

I do have Steep though, haven't played it yet. Maybe will give it a try soon

Last one i tried was 1080 on the N64. I didn’t like it iirc. Cool boarders was the only other I tried. It was better, but not my thing either. Not enough Dew in my blood

Steep is fun and arcadey. But if you spend the hour or two learning Shredders it's way more satisfying and chill.

I have a funny/pathetic story regarding SSX. I literally injured my right thumb playing the first SSX game on PS2. I had to do physio for it, it was ridiculous.

I used to hold my controllers with my right index finger hovering on the square button, middle finger on the triangle, and ring finger on the circle. This is how I played on the NES, Genesis and PS1, especially the PS1 for fighting games, like Soul Blade and Tekken, easier to pull off combos/hit all the buttons. You could make combos with R1/R2 but I never needed to.

It never bothered me before, as we didnt always have use all the buttons. For SSX, we needed to hit R1/R2, so I'd hook my thumb on the wing on the controller, and use my pointing finger to move the right analogue stick, and pinky and ringfingers for R1/R2 (tricks if iirc).

I was really hooked on SSX, as my friends and I played it constantly, trying to break each other's records, and put a lot of strain on my thumb. It got so bad I could barely hold a football, let alone the controller, as I was a QB.

I never told my coach how I got the injury lol, but a few teammates knew. I think I only missed a couple of practices throwing, but had to stop playing vids for a bit.

I think it was Timesplitters 1 that taught me how to hold the controller normally, as it was the first game I recall that used both sticks like we do now in an FPS.

My physio guy, who I had seen several times for other injuries over the years, mocked me endlessly, and deservedly so lol.

This is the kinda shit we make forums for !

Haven’t played a snowboarder in decades but when I was young, O, man, there was an NES game called Heavy Shreddin’. It was the bomb. I loved it so much and played for years. Can vividly recall the box art even.

Heavy Shreddin' (and Ghostbusters 2) was the last Nintendo game I bought before making the change to the Genesis. I remember the neon pink art.

Steep is fun chill game.

I like this game a ton and played it a bunch.

Good soundtrack, and I found the physics to be quite realistic and very consistent and glitch free. Goes for both the skiing and snowboarding.

Plus you get other sports like gliding and wingsuiting and with an expansion a jet wingsuit, which is pretty cool to use right in the beginning to discover all the runs/areas/courses and get access to the peaks before progressing there via normal means.

Highly recommend!

I used to love SSX tricky and put loads of hours into that game.

I've tried with Steep but it's just not as fun. I liked the ridiculousness of tricky much more than the more realistic style of Steep.

Thinking about how much fun SSX would be online on current gen consoles is kind of pissing me off lol.
