Thinking of SoCal

Yeah, I know. I could do it if I really wanted to fly by the seat of my pants & then work my ass off. But I don't know. It's a lot to consider. So, I'm going to give it at least a year before I make that sort of decision. I mean, I could go crash on my daughter's couch in Long Beach while I scope things out but I'm still going to wait a year.
I got an extra room if shit ever hits the fan or you need a spot let me know.

Also would be major tons of eye candy up your alley, you never know...

Downgrading here isn't really downgrading. You really shouldn't be spending much time inside at all anyway.

I think of that too....my wife is hung up on property

I'm more hung up on taxes, drought, etc

Oh, man. That's a long, sad, frustrating tale to tell. Basically, it involved our house still technically being in my wife's parent's names even though her father gave it to us as a wedding gift, him dying last year without his wishes regarding his estate clearly spelled out in his will which was still in probate when my wife died, she didn't leave a will, so, the entire estate was pretty much handed over to my wife's sister the only surviving child. I tried to fight it in order to keep the house but my attorney said it could take years to do so. So, he negotiated a financial settlement for me. And I took it & walked away.

Sorry man. Good precautionary tale to encourage people to get their affairs in order asap.

I actually travel quite often. I say that it’s the greatest city on earth because you can create wealth here unlike most other places. The amount of wealth in the variety of fields that exists here is staggering. meeting connections that can carry you through life isn’t an easy feat but it’s par for the course in this city. Not to mention the weather is perfect year round, and there is beauty from the hills to the beaches and the women in the streets. LA has the debonaire for flair that most other cities try to imitate but fall flat on. Even the traffic and the high cost of living are a testament to the fact that everyone wants to be here. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and my city is the most beautiful one in the world to me.

While I completely disagree with your views on the luster of LA, I completely respect your appreciation on the merits of making it in an ultra competitive city. One of my favourite things is when people embrace the competition of mega urban living.

Respect

Not sure where you live now, but whatever you buy here is pretty much guaranteed to continuously go up in value. We bought a three bedroom house in October and it's already worth $60k more than what we paid for it.

Also, property tax is pretty low here in terms of percentage. In San Diego County it's 1.05-1.20 percent. It can only go up 1 percent per year legally.

Solana Beach pad worth 1.3 mill right now … good times . I told my parents you better not sell that shit though.

Santa ana or Stanton are affordable in the O.C but they are also the hood. I used to live in southwest anaheim which is also the the hood by katella and beach blvd. I was raised in the hood so im not really annoyed by a lot of things other posters complain about. CA is my ideal place to live but the only thing driving me out is the rent a 73 degree day here is heaven compared to having swap ass in texas or choking on hot air in the desert.

Irvine would be nice if you plan on living in the OC.

I live in ny state lol. I was more talking about state income tax which would be quite a bit more in cali. I pay 7500 in property tax now which would be more like 9500 in cali im guessing.

The money isn't a massive difference between ny and cali I just always thought if I left ny I'd go somewhere with 0 income tax..or at least lower..lower property taxes...and politics I agree with. Plus calis response to covid has been pretty scary.

Its basically the weather vs literally every other factor.

Oh, yeah. I liked what I saw of Irvine. My wife took me there to see Coach Oyama's gym is. She was going to take me in to introduce me & show me where her office used to be but the gym was closed.

What about Garden Grove? My wife used to jokingly refer to it as "Garbage Grove" & say it was the one place she would never live in OC. Is it really that bad? My only point of reference was a story from a couple of years ago when someone shot up a bowling alley.

I dont have too much experience with garden grove mostly drove through it might have bought pizza and beer there once but it is next to westminster which I used to frequent which is a bit ghetto because it has south east asian gangs used to have like massage parlors and other rackets it is mostly a Vietnamese area iirc this was over a decade ago though. they also had a store that sold revgear hand wraps which st the time where very good wraps it was like TMA store of the 22 or 405 I forget which freeway goes there.

As a movie buff LA has always been a great place to visit and its a large part as to why OUATIH has become my favorite movie.

On a personal level the movie resonates with me because I would go to LA with a friend of mine and we would watch 2 or 3 movies a day, eat at our favorite places, drive around the Hollywood Hills, take studio tours and revel in the atmosphere there. We even snuck onto the location shoot of The Muppets movie and worked as extras. So when I see Sharon Tate chill watching her movie or Cliff drive around Los Angeles and Rick hanging out on set, or the characters going to dinner, it reminds me of my time in LA (obviously to a much smaller degree) and how much fun I had. I even saw Clu Gulager in person at the New Beverly Cinema (the guy who sells Sharon the book she buys in the movie).

Ever since getting the boot from my house in Sedona by my mother-in-law, I've been almost obsessively thinking of Southern California. I realize that I'm romanticizing it because it's where I met my wife but that's OK. If I'm going to romanticize someplace it might as well be SoCal because everyone else does it. My obsession is specifically about Orange County since that's where Jana & I spent the vast majority of our time together when I met her there a few years ago. I only saw a little bit of LA & the rest of the time we spent in her hometown of Orange, her old neighborhood in Newport Beach where she lived while she was in college, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa & some other places too. And I fell in love with it. I didn't think I'd want to go back there without my wife but it's actually become the opposite. I feel like it's calling me & that I'd feel closer to her there.

Hi buddy. Have you got a close male friend somewhere near where you are now? Can you maybe hang out with him a bit more? I'm suggesting that because my male friends tend to ground me a bit. Also I like the thoughts some here have had about volunteering at some place you enjoy. My work with a horse therapy program helps me a lot. Another thing that helps when I'm feeling down. Make a list of stuff you'd like to see and go see it. For example if I were near you I'd definitely visit Niagara Falls. I'd also visit the nearest botanical gardens and spend an afternoon there chilling. Maybe a bird sanctuary or bio-park (zoo) as well. Good luck to you.

Bro. There is a reason a lot of people are moving out of California. Go someplace where you will have a support system. Or someplace where you can make a fresh start. I definitely think sentimentality is working on you here my friend.

SOCAL is paradise on earth, especially the LA area. Newport Beach is my second favorite place in SOCAL. If Sydney had a snow resort at least equal to Mammoth it would be right with LA; same with Bordeaux, France - if that area had SOCAL weather I would also put it up with LA.

This is my area; just watch 30 seconds of footage at a few time points. Love this area more than the Westside areas I have lived in.

If you a regular guy, then San Diego might be the better choice; same weather; cheaper to live; but no real night life and few hot women. The main groups who move to San Diego are regular boring types from the greater Boston area and the bottom feeders who wind up in the military. LA has little military so you do not have these odd Third World Pig Famer types running around where they do not belong.

If I lived in the USA I'd go to like Wyoming or one of those places with big open lands and everyone looks like a cowboy.
