Yep, you remembered correctly (not sure about the year, though). Of course Silva tested positive afterwards--like many of Vera's opponents). Still, for a guy who briefly wrestled at the D1 level, Vera got bullied and pushed around way too much--even at LHW.

He was good technically but lacked killer instinct and didn't have much finishing ability. He did destroy Mir, but that was shortly after Mir's motorcycle crash when he was pudgy and not 100%.

Vera had so many disappointing fights where he won many/most striking exchanges but ended up losing due to grappling or getting KO'd (Silva, Couture, Rothwell, Shogun). Jardine beat him by simply being more aggressive and controlling the cage. You'd think Vera would've found exploited Jardine's weak chin but he didn't.

Hated the disrespect he showed, someone I always enjoyed being humbled. Much prefer vera... that being said he was deffo a top 10 in his era and had exciting fights mainly

Thiago popped for PEDs this fight

Vera isn't as bad as people make him out to be. His first real bad beatdown was when Jones crushed him. Before that, even though he had some losses, they really weren't bad losses. Lost a competitive 29-28 fight to Sylvia (up until that point in time, Sylvia was arguably the UFC's HW GOAT, I know its funny now but really). Lost to Werdum (1 of the HW GOATs) but the way the fight ended was considered premature stoppage by many. Split decision losses to Jardine & Couture (I truly believe he beat Randy). The Jones loss was a brutal 1-sided beatdown, & I think it was downhill from there for Vera.
