I'm surprised to see there are no threads about this show. I think it's fucking great. Some of the best television I've seen in a while.

For anybody who doesn't know, it's a series about different groups of super rich people who go to a resort for vacation and the whole season is a like a slow boil into some crazy shit going down. It's more a character study on the super rich (usually white) Americans and touches on themes of power dynamics between the haves and have nots, race, sexuality, marriage, spirituality, etc. I like the themes it explores and the use of symbolism and establishing shots to create tension. The use of waves and mountains and also the aesthetics of the locations to tell you that some shit is going down. It's like watching a train wreck that's about to happen but you can't turn away.

Each season has a different cast and location of a branch of the fictional white lotus resort with only a couple characters and story lines reoccur from previous seasons. I only started to watch it because I heard the Goggins is in it only to find out he's in season 3. I started with season 1 and got hooked. Most of the actors deliver great performances with my favorite being Sam Rockwell's in Season 3.

As with anything, it's not perfect and imo each season has it's own strengths and weaknesses. This is being an HBO production, there are pretty actresses who show their tits, but also plenty of shots of actors showing their dicks.

Season 1 - I liked the Hawaiian setting, the dynamic between the resort manager (Murray Bartlett) and one of the guests (Jake Lacey), and imo the young son played by Fred Hechinger had the best character arc of any character in the entire show so far. Barlett's character made the season though because he stole the show every time he was on screen. Also has Daddario and Sweeney, who are nice to look at.
The weakness of this season is that it's grasp on themes is too broad. It touches on too many things without fully fleshing them out, which is understandable because it was the first and shortest season so maybe the creators were trying to do everything at once. It's also the season that does the worst job of connecting the setting of the show with the themes. The Hawaiian setting and locals feel more like a backdrop than active participants in the story.

Season 2 - has the tightest writing. I think the characters are the best developed and there's much stronger connection between the theme of the show and the setting (Sicily) as well local characters playing a larger role. There's a clear theme this season is trying to explore which is about sexuality, infidelity, and gender dynamics, which I guess would also be the most relatable to most people. it was nice to see Christopher from the Sopranos getting some work as well. Halely Lu Richardson is also nice to see although her character was frustrating to watch because she reminded me of so many young women I've met. The Italian woman who plays one of the resort staff is gorgeous.
I'm nitpicking but it felt weird to see the resort manager play a much smaller role this season. Season 1 set the tone of the show and the resort manager had such a presence and the resort itself felt like a character itself, which wasn't felt in season 2 because the manager has a smaller role and the characters leave the resort so much. And I couldn't get over Theo James playing an American. British actors usually do a good job with American accents but his felt forced.

Season 3 - both my favorite and the worst season. I loved the Thai setting and it's theme on buddhism, spirituality, and finding peace with what you have. Personally, the ascetics of Thailand and the use of Buddhist symbolism was by far my favorite since I spent some time in Thailand in a Buddhist monastery there. The Thai style art work in the opening credits is beautiful as well. It has a huge cast of name actors like Goggins, Rockwell, Isaacs, etc. As always there are pretty actresses but Sarah Catherine Hook stood out to me. Her character was also the most relatable. Having been to Thailand many times, it was fun to see things that are familiar to me.
But there are a lot of gripes about this season. The writing was the weakest and the cast was too bloated. Some of the character arcs didn't feel fully fleshed out despite being the longest season. The pacing in the beginning feels too slow and time is wasted. In some ways it's understandable because spirituality is not an easy theme to tackle but still they spent too much time going over the same beats repeatedly. The resort manager this season is basically a background character and there's too much time is spent on minor Thai characters whose stories don't really amount to much. I was excited to see Goggins but he felt wasted here. Rockwell stole the show when he showed up.

One small gripe I have is the Muay Thai fight scene where the fighters are wearing everlast gloves instead of a thai brand like fairtex lol. Someone didn't do their research.

What are your thoughts about this show?

Another point about season 3.

There seems to some people complaining about a plot point that involves the use of the pong pong tree a.k.a. the "suicide tree." This is a tree that bears a fruit with toxic seeds that have been traditionally used to commit murder and suicide in southeast asia and India. It becomes a major plot point in the end of the season and viewers who have obviously never been to southeast asia think it's ridiculous and unbelievable that a resort would have these trees as decoration.

But in fact these trees are not rare to see at all in Southeast asia. I've stayed at places where these trees were in the garden. It's an interesting looking tree that is used for decoration and most people aren't stupid enough to eat the seeds of random trees. Not to mention toxic plants are everywhere in the world and people see them everyday but nobody pays attention. There are tons of poisonous mushrooms growing forests and you wouldn't just randomly start eating them during hikes. It's funny to see people who have never traveled or paid attention to plants complain about this.

Before I read your breakdown in depth, just a couple of things:

I started watching this past season while it unfolded in order to see what the hype was all about. I've been a big fan of Goggins since The Shield days, so his presence on the season 3 cast definitely was part of the reason I got into it. I thought it was quite good. Entertaining, well-paced, strong scripting, great acting. Also, it had an impressive fusion of genres. I had assumed, going in, that this show was purely anthology, with the seasons having nothing to do with each other. So when Rothwell and Gries' story arc came up, I had to just use the context to make sense of it, before going back to the first two seasons.

I watched 1 and 2 in quick succession shortly after 3 wrapped.

1 felt like the most mixed bag for me. I understood what Mike White was going for philosophically with the Britton/Zahn/Sweeney/Hechinger family storyline but I didn't find it that engaging. I particularly thought that the stuff with Hechninger's journey from materialism and tech obsession to appreciating nature was a good idea but that it came across as pretty heavyhanded in execution. Best storyline on that one for me was the Jake Lacey/Alexandra Daddario/Murray Bartlett stuff. Lacey was spot on perfect as an arrogant jerk. Sign of a good actor- I first remember him playing one of the two new additions to Dunder Mifflin in the fairly lackluster final season of the Office, where he was just a low-key likable guy- stark contrast to his character on this show. He played both types of characters very well. Daddario was great, one of the more likable and empathetic characters on that season. Brittany O'Grady did a great job, too, as Sweeney's friend who undergoes a shift in her perceptions and priorities over the course of the season. Coolidge delivered, blending humor and sadness.

But I wasn't blown away by it.

Season 2, conversely, struck me as purely great television. Top to bottom the best season of the show and I don't think it's even particularly close. The season had the most cogent writing, with Lucia and Mia very effectively serving as connective thread between the Plaza/Sharpe/James/Fahey story and the three generations of Imperioli family story. Not only that, all three of those separate story piece were great. None of them meandered, unlike some of the story arcs in the other two seasons. I would say that Coolidge/Gries/Portia story was arguably the weakest of the season but even that is only a statement of how great the rest of it was, as it was very good as well. Very tense and unnerving slow burn, plus you got great character actor Tom Hollander doing solid work.

Season 2 was excellent in my opinion, almost to the extent that I'm not sure Mike White and co. will top that. Seems like peak form of exactly what he is going for with this show. Props to him. I've read that in addition to being the showrunner/creator, he writes and directs all the episodes, which is pretty insane.

I enjoy it for the most part. Didn't like how the last season ended though.

I binged the entire thing. I liked the first season then started noticing the constant gay theme. Looked into the creator and it explains it. He probably drew on stories from his experience in life and people he knew. I still loved the comedy until season it was not as funny.

I've obviously heard good things, but I'm always curious as to why it's not the juggernaut it should be given the praise.

That only leads me to one question...

How gay is it?

I've seen seasons 2 and 3. It's good dark humor, decent premise, great ensemble casts. Slightly prefer season 3.

I heard Goggins was on the show so I tried watching season 1. It really stunk and was so boring I couldn't get through episode 1. I skipped to season 3 and found it equally terrible, really I only watched Goggins and his storyline, which was ok.

I watched the first episode thought it was boring.

Then it kept winning all these awards so I went back and watched a bit more then it hooked me.

I wasn't impressed with the italy season I have also unsubscribed from hbo max all they had left was righteous gemstones. House of dragon is meh.

Pretty darn gay
S1 has a scene of a guy rimming another guy.
S2 has a scene of a guy taking backshots from his nephew.
S3 has a scene of a guy jerking off his older brother while banging a chick. And Rockwell has a monologue about getting railed by different dudes while he's dressed up like an Asian girl.

Watched only S1E1 which was free before I got MAX and haven't tried to watch the rest... aside from the Coon boobs scene.

So....pics of breasts ?
True Detective was better for that purpose.

I get MAX for no extra charge from Spectrum. I think the streaming services are doing this to get more ad money by saying they have more subscribers since it's free with Spectrum.

is this what one of the recent simpsons episodes was based on?

I love the show.

Season 2 in Italy was my favourite but last month we went to Thailand for my Honeymoon and stayed at one of the hotels on Koh Samui from Season 3 and it was incredible.
Season 2 was definitely the best of the three so far. S3 definitely went a little bit Chuck & Buck on the cringey gross factor, I don't really think that was justified, if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about, but it was still a very good season of television.

The acting in all three seasons has been incredible. S2 got a SAG ensemble nomination, and I have no doubt S3 will also receive one.

That's not his nephew.

This is a really good show. I’ve seen all 3 seasons and enjoys every one.

Season 3 had Uncle Rico, Shane Vendrell, and a hot French Canadian chick, so it wins by default.
