Television The White Lotus

I heard Goggins was on the show so I tried watching season 1. It really stunk and was so boring I couldn't get through episode 1. I skipped to season 3 and found it equally terrible, really I only watched Goggins and his storyline, which was ok.
I honestly thought the Goggins story line was stupid. As much as I love this show, the way the climax happened was dumb.
That's not his nephew.
Yes but when the scene happens we know him as his nephew which was part of the shock factor I guess.

I've watched season 1 over about 3 days. I enjoyed it for sure (or I would have stopped), and I agree the overall standard of acting was extremely high. I think the race-related stuff has already aged poorly, when I looked it up I saw it was made in 2021, which certainly makes sense. I think it will make S1 (I don't know about the other 2) be said to have aged like milk concerning that stuff, but otherwise, it's really solid.
If I had to pick one subplot, I think it has to be the hotel manager and the preppy douche guy. But the family story was overall solid as well. And I see why Jennifer Coolidge won awards, fantastic performance and she brought some much needed laugh-out-loud moments.

I've read that S2 switches focus from class/race to gender relations, so at least they're not rehashing the same topics.

S2 focuses a lot on infidelity, which is a timeless topic I suppose. Same goes for S3 which is about spirituality.

I don't think the race stuff has aged though. I know people who still talk like Sweeney's character in real life. It's fucking annoying.

Class & wealth is always the central preoccupation. Everything else is merely a lens for examining this. The very premise of the show is a study of the invasion of wealthy, American anglos into cloistered, luxurious getaways that carefully erect their gates, and don their theatrical masks, to keep the reality of the world that hosts them safely tucked away from their guests' gaze. In every season the show plays with this; contrasts what is real with what isn't, and the illusions these people inhabit.
In the first season the son is forced to confront the absence of his virtual world; the parents must resolve the fact they are maintaining a pretense without really confronting the divide between them; the girls the fact they aren't even honest about their real feelings (as about boys they like); the massage hostess the fact the rich woman is just looking for an emotionally cleansing dalliance. It's all about illusion: false facades.

The second season focuses on deceit. With the couples that is the lies they maintain between husbands and wives, and that includes infidelity, but it's bigger than that. Then there is the prostitute who deceives her marks, and the lies between three generations of men. Finally there is the gay mafia maintaining an illusion of wealth where there is none. Once again: all false facades. It's a study of the illusory world the characters, specifically rich people, cloak themselves in-- some might say swaddle-- to avoid dealing with more painful realities. And they can afford the expense of these illusions.

The third season focuses on the tension between the internal spiritual world and the privilege of the constructs of these illusions. What happens if the illusion is stripped away? What are the consequences? Can they be endured?

Tried to get into this show but cannot....... hear great thi gs but farthest I got was 2.5 eps into season 2 . Didn't get past 1st in season one. Haven't watched any other season

Im mid season 3.

S1 was awesome.
S2 was good
S3.. I'm not liking it so much so far.

Oh, we gotta give a nod to how incredible the theme song is for this show. I love how they altered it just a bit to reflect the new locations while maintaining the core melodic theme. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about the S3 version, but by the end, it was easily my favorite (I listen to the opening theme every episode even if I binge shows because I believe it's a necessary part of establishing an emotional connection with the show and its music through that music).

I love the art in the opening credits as well, especially for season 3. I didn't notice at first, but the part of the art that gets focused on when the actor's names appear represents the character they play. Thought that was cool.

Apparently the composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, got in a fight over the music with Mike White and won't return, which is a shame because I think his music is integral to the mood of the show.

On the second episode of season 1 and so far this show sucks absolute ass. The yellow filter and bad acting is obnoxious.. I’ve seen the show held in high regard and I’m wondering how..

Granted I just finished Succession, which was great, but does this show get better?

I love the show.

Season 2 in Italy was my favourite but last month we went to Thailand for my Honeymoon and stayed at one of the hotels on Koh Samui from Season 3 and it was incredible.
Congratulations on getting hitched!

We spent a fortnight in Sicily in the town season 2 was filmed and had drinks at the hotel with a couple we met there. One of the best meals I've ever had there.

I always fancied Ko Samui but ended up in Chiang Mai being it's their food capital, I'd like to do another week there and a week somewhere more beachy.

If you think S1 sucks ass, then this show probably isn't for you. Although IMO S2 is the best, generally people like all the seasons with having favorites. My favorite is S3 but it's the worst rated one.

Chiang Mai is way better than Koh Samui so you chose well. There are much better beach destinations in Thailand than Samui. But if you like more "resorty" places, I'd suggest one of the Koh Yao islands. Gorgeous beaches, much more untouched, more popular with Thais (with money) to go for their honeymoon. Samui is way too touristy and overpriced imo.

I would love to go to the town in Sicily!

We ended up doing Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui.

I personally loved Koh Samui, we did a few days in a villa with a pool and then a few nights at the Anantara Bophut resort (White Lotus) and it was really nice just to chill out for a few days at the resort and relax after the craziness of Bangkok.

Also went and did some snorkeling and got a boat out to see some of the islands, was nice to go to Fisherman's village on an evening even if it was a bit touristy.

I thought this thread was about Buakaw.

Oh how wonderful was all of that? The full Thailand experience, lovely honeymoon. Gorgeous for you both.
