The Welterweight Division After GSP Retired.

You're right sir, Khabib never did any work on the ground, and GSP was Mr GNP and improving position.

Im gonna argue with you brother.
I definitely was a GSP hater, and he played it way too safe many times, but he brutalized Serra and Penn on the ground who both have better BJJ than anyone Khabib fought. GSP had the record for significant ground strikes when he retired, idk if he still does.

Having said that utmost respect to both and I never found Khabib boring or a blanket at all. Idk what that guy’s talking about. Khabib was an animal.
I live rent free in this guys head now because I mocked Pride.
Imagine being proud of mocking PRIDE. Incredible self own

In other replies I say that at one point GDP was a finishing machine, but his last 8 fights he had one finish...and that's Bisping.

Talent wise he's an excellent fighter but...you know what I'm saying brother lol.

I kind of wish he went up sooner or fought at MW more because it brought out his need to finish. Bisping isn’t the worst guy or easiest to finish.

GSP definitely got too safe as time went on, idk exactly why. But he did dominate for a while and we saw how Jones also got complacent when he dominated at LHW for so long.Silva too when he was dominating put out some stinkers where he just didn’t do much. Maybe he lacked the motivation.

He did, but you know that a lot of people here go a little overboard. Ignoring the context of a lot of those fights or straight up lying about what happened in the fights. Like people calling the Fitch fight boring when he beat the shit out of him lol. Or ignoring that his last 3 defenses were after serious acl injuries. Saying he got pieced up on the feet by Jake Shields, when Shields was going elbow deep in his eye sockets without penalty. Etc. etc.

Like I said, I never really liked him but he was a seriously talented fighter there's no denying that.

His last 8 fights he had 1 finish, in his first 8 he was a finishing machine.

Im not saying he sucked, but I know what you mean sir.

He actually said in an interview that he got more and more safe after the first Serra fight.
He also said that before every fight he couldn't sleep, and before the first Serra fight he slept like a baby.

He said he should've known something was off just from that.
He said he never underestimated anyone again.

Yeah but he got finished by Serra standing up, and finishing a guy on the ground decreases the chances of that happening. It just doesn’t make sense to me. He finished Serra on the ground in the rematch. He used to be very aggressive on the ground. The Hughes loss would make more sense in changing that than the Serra one. I hate to dispute the man’s own words but… lol

We don’t always know what’s goin on in our own heads.

The way he said it, it sounded gradual not instant, but you're right about the timeline seeming off somehow.

I can't argue with the guy like you said but...lol.

Nah man, the kid has potential, Dana White said so :)
Plus the fact that the OP mentioned Erick Silva means this thread is a safe space to discuss young prospects.

Fair enough, but Eric Silva is just coming into his own.
Raul ain't getting any younger sir lol.

GSP probably would have lost a Hendricks rematch or if he won he’d keep going until someone like Rory or Woodley would beat him

I'm pretty sure when Robbie was on his full beast mode resurgence after losing the belt he literally beat the prime out of Matt Brown. I remember watching the fight thinking most people would have crumbled from Robbies power after about 5minutes that night. Matt used all his will and chin to stay in the fight and fought gamely, but took a massive beating.

Gsp could never do this to Usman
GSP would 50-45 Edwards all day every day. Twice on Tuesdays. People forget how good Georges was. Edwards would have to worry about the take down. His whole game plan would be different fighting Georges. The moment he is comfortable he gets dumped on his ass.

Eh. Idk. GSP v. Hughes, GSP v. Serra, GSP v. Penn, Penn v. Hughes, Hughes v. Trigg, Nick Diaz and the Strikeforce run, Diaz v. Condit, GSP absolutely demolishing Koscheck, there was a lot of exciting welterweight stuff in the pre-2013 era.

Yeah, it was a shame that's where the buck stopped for Matt, but no one was beating that version of Robbie Lawler. The streak Matt was on until then was very exciting, though. He was out for blood.

Most of the things that you listed would have happened even if GSP was in play :p
Rory animal (check)
Silva youthful (check)
Matt Brown looking better (check)

Not sure what kinda Ghoul GSP was to drain Silva's youthful energy or hold Matt Brown down
Matt Brown is a nightmare matchup for GSP based off his name alone

Khabib First 8 fights 4 finishes, his last 5 fights 3 finishes.
And he never just laid on somebody without either swinging, or trying to improve position.

GSP last 8 fights 1 finish...first 8 he was a finish machine.

Fitch had 4 finishes in his first 8, and then he went GSP mode and they both controlled and just did enough not to get stood up sir.

I watched them all just like you did sir.
The "sirs" are killing me today lol

I agree it was a very exciting era

UFC ww eras

Something before Hughes we all don't remeber
Hughes
Hughes Penn GSP
GSP total control
Post GSP l, Hendricks Lawler Rory
Tyron Era, ifrequent fights so it was like 4 wins and 1 draw but a long time
Usman modern era
Now things are open
