When Rickson Gracie was on the Joe Rogan Experience a few weeks ago, he advocates use of a dangerous "Vale Tudo Guard" as opposed to a clinching guard. Does anybody know specifically what he is talking about? IE pictures, videos etc? Also if you know of any resources of anybody teaching effective attacks from there online as well

I think anderson had a good vale tudo gaurd didnt take heavy shots kept distance and threw nice elbows and punches from the gaurd

It's a modified knee shield/scissor sweep position with emphasis on using the top shin across the collar bone as a frame against their weight.

I'm pretty sure it's this with punching from the bottom:

His guard in Pride was both feet on the hips and wrist control. Didn't seem very active at all.

I always thought a Vale Tudo guard as a closed guard, just with bottom guy striking at top guy alot.

Go to Gracie University and watch the 5 positions Ryron and Rener break down for punch defense - best vale tudo guard around

Can you actually explain what they teach since I've never seen it?

Are they just closed guard variants? Obviously they love the overhook/knee on biceps --> triangle. I assume they also recommend underhook with the head, underhook without the head, and what else?

Gracie Combatives guard has 4 phases. 1st phase is the safest one, overhook and very close, they don't try to hold tight so as not to lose strength. Other 3 phases are a bit more risky, especially the 3hd one, if I recall, where the top guy can punch the bottom guy right in the groin.

I assume they like a guillotine variant as well... rat guard or whatever it's being called these days.

As far as GC goes...

The goal of the punch block series is to bring the attacker into stage one, where you are holding them tightly in your guard, leaving them no room to punch. (Overhook with head control) Stage two is when they bring one or both arms back to punch, which you immediately block with your shin, holding their tricep with your hand.

If they sit further back, you move to stage three, putting your knees near their chin and feet on their hips. Finally, if they stand right back up, your feet go on their hips, keeping them too far away to land a punch. As soon as they try to shove forward to get close, bring them back into stage one.

If they have stood up like in stage four, but either stepped back or simply not pressed forward, you need to shift your strategy. Now their weight is no longer driving into you, so instead you want to kick at their knees to get them to step back. This puts you in stage five, from which you can spin on your back with a foot raised, staying square to your opponent. (Allan Goes vs. Kazushi Sakuraba in Pride 4) ( Renzo vs. Oleg Taktarov)

How similar is this to Sperry's Vale Tudo style? They have a 5 day free trial so I guess thats plenty of time to watch all the punch block stuff...

It's a bit different, Helio vs Carlson lineage. Sperry seems to advocate the distance game more with the scissor sweep style guard and going to de la riva when they stand. Both are good though. I like Sperry's DLR series when they stand, but I like how Rener & Ryron have made their punch blocks into a system

Some of you might like this too, its about using RDLR for mma, but its half guard as far as im concerned!
