If Conor went the route of self promotion ala Floyd Mayweather and his first fight was against Nate Diaz…

The implications for the UFC would be huge [Not to mention both he and Nate would make at least double what they would fighting under the UFC banner].

The UFC would get a court to block it. The fighters sign contracts that prevent them from doing that. Randy Couture tried to get out of his UFC contract and fight Fedor and they stopped him.

It won't work and if you took 2 minutes extra to think about it, you'd know it as well.

It's amazing how many threads have been made on this.

They'd both have to fight out their contracts.

You mean like this ?

Randy held on to his title for nearly 2 years during his dispute with the UFC. Yet, Sherdoggers want Conor stripped after 4 months.

Obviously they could never legally make this fight. And without the UFC Conor doesn't do that great of numbers

Conor has said he is willing to fight. If the UFC don't let him, then the UFC are potentially in breach of contract. If that is the case, the contract may potentially be void, and Conor would be free to do whatever he wanted (including sue the UFC for breach of contract). All depends on the wording of the contract, and what the lawyers for both sides could prove though.

It would easily work… The profit margin is huge for the promoter… Even some arab out in the UAE would have enough money to put it on, make a fortune and earn Conor and Nate double. Plenty of people in the business have already confirmed this. Rogan included.

I wonder if the contract would hold up under EU labour laws. It's not like Connor needs a US courts approval, he doesn't live there or need to fight there again ?

If it was the UFC name that was responsible for numbers, MM would do big numbers purely off the fact that he is a champion in the UFC.

A well thought out totally innovative plan. You should call Conor.

Ye, you go find some arab dude willing to pay. Good luck with that.

The UFC helps. Conor is a big star, but he is a big star when he is paired with the UFC. Conor on his own wouldn't be close to selling over a million like he does with the UFC. Its kinda like how Rampage did like 4 times more buys (at his lowest) as a headliner with the UFC then when he headlined outside the UFC.

It'd be interesting if he could challenge the contract like Bosman did with football (soccer) contracts.

You must watch a lot of court tv shows

To get around this contract issue they should both just wear masks and give themselves new names like Captain Stockton vs Captain Notorious, all the fans who buy the event would know its really McGregor vs Diaz but the UFC wouldn't be able to prove it.

As long as the winner couldn't resist peeling off their mask and giving a sly wink to the crowd.

Honestly Conor should announce he's doing a live stream the same time as the ufc press conference and see who gets more people watching. Then ufc might be like fuck he's right.
