Media The UFC's "Opportunity" Re-evaluated by Gray Maynard

If 650 of the 700 and change fighters under UFC contract got together and refused to fight again until there was something more equitable, they could probably have things wrapped up in 6 months or less.
Getting that many people to agree is fucking near impossible, let alone on an issue like unionization. Not to mention contractors can be fired for striking, they don't get the protections employees do.
But isn't half the roster or more American/American-based? It doesn't sound so impossible in that sense. What seems hard is that an influential group should take the first step and convince the rest, and that would involve confronting the UFC even if you are making good money.
Still very hard. To be blunt and condescending, a lot of fighters would be like Sam Alvey and oppose a union because they don't like them politically or on principle, even though they would benefit from it. And yes, it's hard getting the first people to step forward, especially since the UFC tends to target those people. Keep in mind, if I'm a normal company, I can't send goons to beat down union organizers. If I'm the UFC, I can match up a fighter who wants to unionize unfavorably and pay their opponent a bonus if they break their arm.
I heard it sold 200k buys... after paying for the arena, every fighter... 15 million isn't a ton of money gross...
In the sense of maximizing profits, no, but several million in gross for an event is still pretty damn great. It's not even an opportunity loss really. And if the last fight only sound 200k (which I doubt), the UFC has no one else but to blame but themselves if they can't sell HWs.

So long as the fighters act like prostitutes and think solely about themselves, they'll never have collective power to negotiate.

So, Dana will continue pimping them out until their pussies are worn out and then release them - so to speak lol

Different Era …., Maynard has always been a baby imo …..Don’t sign a contract if it’s not enough money

Not the best argument to use the only two that made it to that level out probably 1000's over the years, 1000's that made it to the UFC, thats already an accomplishment itself.

He went from "happiest moment of his life" to "I deserve more" reaaaaal fast.

No one, literally no one deserves shit. If you want something? You have to earn it, and take it.

Nothing will change unless it's court ordered. I firmly believe that. The UFC should pay fighters more, and the bigger names should get a higher percentage while the floor is higher for those who are working their way up.

1,000 threads won't make a difference either way.

Still, if you're a fan of a fighter, there are ways to support them. You could purchase some of their merchandise if you are so inclined.
Let's the guvment involved in everything! They do everything so well!

I think the minimum pay should go up but the UFC cards are built around having good nights of fights and dont rely on being top heavy. The champions all make plenty of money

We all complain about the UFC pay scale but the majority of us don’t support competitive organizations. A lot of people are UFC fans first and MMA fans second.

Well if anyone knows about blowing opportunities it's Gray Maynard...

I think you missed the point about lion's share. Athletes in other sports get a fair share from merchandising. You buy a team jersey with a player's number/name, the player gets his fair share.

People have no issues supporting the athletes in boxing, baseball or soccer because they don't get ripped off. The UFC operates like those shoddy restaurateurs who demand a share of the waiters' tip. This seems rare, but does exist. If you knew that the restaurant did this, would you tip more to compensate for the owner's take? Or would you simply stop going there?

The UFC is Amy's Baking Company of sports. They operate exactly the same. Dana White and Samy Bouzaglo are exactly the same. Sociopathic, petty gangsters. The difference is the UFC fans. They would have defended Samy Bouzaglo in this video, saying the waitresses knew what they signed up for. Nobody was forcing them.*

*Of course, the miserable cunts here who say they knew what they signed up for and nobody was forcing them all the time will say they wouldn't. And we believe their lies just like we believe Dana's.

I get that. They had to fight for it for decades. The fighters are far too fractured and won't come together. The courts will have to make the change for them. As I stated, the fighters deserve a higher percentage of revenue. It won't reach fair levels until there's a huge change and I don't think it's on the horizon either.

In other words, if you want to become super wealthy in fighting sports, go in boxing.

It's not only MMA : all other fighting sports don't pay that much (compared to other sports) unless you go in boxing.

Actually, MMA is the 2nd highest fighting sport behind boxing.

There's even less money in kickboxing, muay thai, karate, etc.

This is exactly why I have 0 hate for O'Malley's approach to taking easy fights.

The kids seem to love his silly schtick.
He's not too offensive; lol @ being "undefeated, though."
Hopefully more fighters take a page out his book re: self promotion and getting paid what they're worth.

More $$ = better athletes, trainers, camps, and fighters.
