Rumored The UFC Twitter account sends out DMs stating Mcgregor vs Poirier 2 is now for the title!

I think it should be:

Conor/Poirier winner vs Oliveira/Gaethje winner for the title
Chandler vs Hooker winner for the next title shot
Conor/Poirier loser gets RDA
Tony vs Felder next

Well in a perfect world I guess..

Not really.

It's really just a fake belt until someone like do Bronx wins it and you can argue he had a chance against khabib.

Knowing khabib could come back and destroy both again really makes the LW division look super weak.
What if someone like do bronx loses to someone like conor or Dustin?

And what if, hypothetically, Conor or Dustin were to defeat Do Bronx. Would it be a fake title then?

Conor vs Poirier for 155 belt. Khabib vs GSP for the new 165 belt. Winner of Usman/Burns vs Chimaev for the 175 belt - replacing 170.

This would be epic and make a lot of sense. The 170 division just moves up 5 pounds, still legitimate. The 165 belt gets the biggest fight with 2 top fighters, making the division legit from the start. Conor gets the belt again at 155 and keeps the division legit as he is probably the 2nd best guy in the division after Khabib.

3 fights at LW in 7 years in UFC .. 3 title shots ..

To be fair, one was a defense. Buy your point is perfectly valid, he obviously shouldn't be fighting for a title without at least one high profile win first.

Edit: Khabib had the actual belt when they fought, I had forgotten that.

Was obvious when Khabib announced his retirement.

Khabib said it should be between Conor, Dustin and Islam, but with Conor and Dustin ranked higher this makes sense.

Meanwhile Islam fights Dober in March and another opponent in the fall then Islam fights winner of Dustin and Conor for the belt around 2022 New Year

So fucking stupid to let McGregor anywhere near a belt. He doesn't deserve it, and he will never defend it.

I'm interested in the fight though.

They are already fighting, and Khabib's been retired since October. Did you really want to instead wait until the summer or fall just so the winner can fight whoever for the title instead of them defending against them then?

You're advocating for a worse scenario just to spite Conor.

Even the UFC isn’t fucked up enough to make Khabib vs GSP for an inaugural 165 belt. Considering both are currently retired, and if they do fight again it’s about 99% guaranteed that their next fight would officially be the last of their careers. There would be nothing legit about this new 165 division under those circumstances, and it makes no sense.

You can’t be serious??

EDIT: Number 1 contender fight for 165 will be Masvidal vs Nate Diaz II. You get that guy to fight champ (winner of Khabib vs GSP). After, McGregor can move up for his attempt for a 3rd belt. Huge paydays everywhere for everyone. People will tune in and these divas - I mean "superstar" fighters - get their big fights to keep them interested.

Who gives a crap about titles at this point, at least they didn't make another interim LW title.

I'm not trying to spite anyone. Allowing McGregor to fight for a belt he doesn't deserve and that he is unlikely to defend is the worst possible scenario for the UFC.

What in the world makes you think that if McGregor wins he will defend his belt against anyone? That's not his MO. He's more likely to parlay a new UFC title into a boxing match.

His title wins v Aldo and Alvarez weren’t legit?

No, I think they were legit and spectacular. I also think they have almost no bearing on whether he currently deserves a title shot.

If Conor doesn't defend by next January, a year after winning the title, then how is that any better than the title potentially not even been won by anybody by next January because we're instead waiting for multiple winners of multiple fights before even having a title fight?

One step at a time. Crown a champion first, worry about defences later. We've got a chance to crown a champion now.

Anybody suggesting that Conor would defend the belt should he win it, is out of their mind. And does anybody honestly believe he’d defend it against the guy that embarrassingly kicked his ass?

This is too far out even for this place.

1. If they want to crown a champion, imho they should start with a title contender. McGregor's last win at LW was in 2016. That's a fact, and it isn't spiting McGregor to point it out. He has no business fighting for a LW title at this point.
2. What good does having a champ do if that champ is very unlikely to ever defend his belt? McGregor's won four belts in two different divisions in two different organizations, and he's never defended any of those belts once. They'll be forced to strip him yet again.

For McGregor, belts aren't there to be defended. They are to be used as stepping stones to bigger fights. It's a smart insight that has made him more money than any other MMA fighter I'm aware of. He turned his FW belt into a title shot at LW. He turned his LW belt into a bout with Mayweather. If he gets the LW belt again he'll try to rematch Mayweather, or fight Pacquiao, or Canelo (lol), or Logan Paul. He doesn't care if it's a circus; he cares about getting paid. I get why he does what he does. What I don't get is why the UFC would see having him fight for a title as being in their best interests. It isn't.

Don't really get who people think should be fighting for it? Dustin is off a win over Hooker. McGregor off a win. Gaethje just lost. Only one with a solid claim is Do Bronx.

Seems pretty reasonable to me.
