The TUF 20 Fantasy League - General Discussion & Analysis (Registered Players Only!!)

I just want to point out the strong performances by the geezer crew:

Ah Man, joined Mar 2005
leto1776, joined Jul 2005
battery, joined Mar 2006

What little hair we have left may be gray, but we've learned a thing or two in those years.

...also, who you callin' old?!? :icon_evil

...oh yeah...i am old. :icon_sad: will be heading to old man bed soon in case the conversation about picks continues. maybe we can watch the weigh-ins first and then PM picks to arkain? :)

Finally, there's obviously a big advantage to picking last and knowing what your opponents' picks are, especially at this point. I'd like to put forth the suggestion, if everyone agrees to it, that iNoScopedJFK, battery, and I make our picks by PM to Arkain2K for the finals, to keep our picks in the spirit of picking who we think is going to win and how, rather than what makes the most sense giving each other's picks.

that is a good idea about the PM to arkain and he can post the picks for us...if he doesn't mind doing that. :wink

I really like this idea of keeping the Top 3 contenders' Final picks a secret, since it will also keep the identity of the TUF 20 Fantasy League Champion a surprise until his coronation after the final Score Board is revealed! :D

So I agree to be the "secret escrow" for the Top 3, but there's one condition: the entry you send in is your last and final! I don't want my inbox to be filled with "purges"! Hahaha. Sleep on it tonight, let it marinate for a day, and PM me your Final selection after you're completely sure!

As for the rest, please continue to use the Weekly Picks thread as usual.

my promise on the purges is shaky at best...

...but i will definitely make one choice and stick with it!

excellent suggestion, ah man. :)

Thanks to Arkain for running this thing and good luck to everyone still in it for the prize...

My pick is Rose via first round submission. I was very impressed and a little surprised by Carla's hands and think she will try to implement a similar game plan vs Rose to the one she used against Jessica that includes counter punching and strategically timed, point-scoring takedowns without hanging out for very long in top position. I don't think it will work this time. Carla was able to take advantage of Jessica in this way because while Jessica pressured Carla, that pressure mostly consisted of plodding forward slowly in a predictable manner with pedestrian footwork and little head movement. Jessica never really got the distance right, missed (came up short) on a lot of punches that she didn't really commit to properly, and was countered time and time again by the shorter Carla. Even so, Carla did have some problems and ended up retreating at times under the pressure. Rose's striking is a much different animal than Jessica's. She's fast and fearless and will hang in there throwing volume even if she gets hit by Carla. I think about half way through the first round, Rose will stun Carla on the feet with punches, force her into a desperation shot, and either submit her from the bottom with an armbar or get a reversal and a RNC.

Really? Pretty sure Jeremy Stephens has had about 63 UFC fights...

Heh... Yeah, now I feel like a tool. To my defence, I am horrible with names in the first place. When I went and checked out Jeremy Stephens the face immediately clicked to a few fights, especially the recent one vs. Cub. :(

Jessica's striking has always been a means to an end, which is getting to the ground where she can ground and pound or submit. She is not a bad striker by any means, but (perhaps because of her length?) she's not very dynamic or fast with it. Her past two fights at 105 she was handily outstruck by Calonoc and Waterson... but that was ok, because she was always going to go to the ground anyway.

This fight, she never ONCE initiated a takedown. Didn't even try. When she WAS on her back, the deadly "gumby legs" were nowhere to be seen. It was like her entire plan was to outstrike Carla, everything else be damned.... even though "everything else" is where she's stronger.

I was left with a feeling of "something was really off" after this fight. However, I did learn that I totally underrated Carla's striking before this season of TUF. She has decent technique and *damn* good power. It's also nice to see a woman shooting power doubles for takedowns, which is a rare thing. Usually they go for trips up against the cage.

Oh, and I've got Carla for this. Rose is a great striker, but she's the one who is going to be backing up after she taste's Carla's power. I think Carla wins by decision. Not a very bold prediction with Carla, I know.

She probably knows that she can't take Carla down. I think she actually did make one attempt in the 3rd round and was easily stuffed.

Pretty much a can't miss weigh in considering the card is filled with 115 lb women.

Also there will likely be some heated staredowns. :icon_evil

Some words of wisdom from the cast just in case you still don't know who to put some vCash on after the weigh-in tonight:

There are four fights listed for betting in vBookie for now, I'll update the list up there once more are added.

Really surprise that Esparza is the underdog in the Finale. I guess gamblers are piling their money on Rose after those subs :)

I know, right? The 9-2 former Invicta FC champ underdog to the2-1 fighter. *shakes head* Better for anyone betting on Carla, even though it's not a huge odds difference.

Poor Carla has been underestimated from day one of this thing. There were people dogging her even when she was the Invicta champ. But the bottom line is: Carla has two losses...one to the GOAT (Fujii) in Carla`s 4th pro fight and one to the GOTE (Greatest of this Era - Aguilar) which was a split decision. I just can`t count her out or bet against her, no matter how flashy or determined her opponent appeared in recent fights.

I think that one reason people underestimate Carla (in addition to her Hobbit-like stature) is how she appears in interviews on TUF. She gets nervous. She seems like one of the least confident fighters in that house. But, she blocks that out when she gets in the cage. It`s like she has two speeds: nervous and kill. Rose is welcome to prove me wrong on this...but it`s exactly that: she has to prove it and actually beat Carla before I`ll believe she is the best. Until then, I have to believe Carla will find a way to win.

Anybody else think Aisling vs Astro Girl is fucking bullshit?

Difference in records aside, Astro Girl showed up at 114. Aisling is 118 looking haggard as fuck. Clear special treatment because the goat is her boy.

Update 5: JoJo vs. Ham = Senior girl vs. Freshman girl. And LOL at the ghetto duct tape they use to cover up the logo on Ham's tanktop! :D

Update 6: Bec with the stinky finger *shakes head*

Update 7: Markos looks mighty fine dehydrated, which can't be said for most of the others, who looks kinda dead.

Update 8: Torres vs. Magana

Carla's game plan against Penne was to win by decision. Do takedowns for points, but then get back up because Jessica is dangerous on the ground. In a championship fight, if Carla follows the same sort of plan, she can only win at the end of 5 rounds. Rose, on the other hand, will be looking to win it and end it in each of the 5 rounds.

Also, even the fighters on TUF Talk didn't seem to think much of Carla's chances.
