As early as the 1600s, and certainly by the 1700s, colonists and immigrants were thinking of themselves, not as English or Spanish or any of the rest, but as Americans. That's what this country is built upon - that no matter where we're individually from, we're all Americans, and even now, we should take pride in that fact.
