This is a good early sign from Skydance. The last few movies these guys have made, have been great. Dungeons and Dragons didn't do amazing at the box office, but it has gotten great reviews from critics and fans alike, and has done really well in streaming. I'm really glad they are going with a new crew and story. Hope they do the same thing on the TV front. I also think this move is farther along than we think. This announcement is getting a ton of press, and was promoted by Paramount.
Is it finally happening?

Breaking: Paramount Developing “New Take” Star Trek Film From ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Duo
It looks like Paramount has found that “
fresh idea” for a new Star Trek movie they were looking for, possibly ushering the franchise back onto the big screen for the first time in almost a decade. The new management team running the studio has made good on promises to
invest in franchises and attract new talent, looking to the creative pair behind films like
Spider-Man: Homecoming and
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to deliver a new Star Trek movie.
An original Star Trek movie
The big news was first reported by
Deadline and then followed up by the other Hollywood trades confirming the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have beamed in to write, produce, and direct a new “original” Star Trek film. According to Deadline, there are no plot details beyond saying “Goldstein and Daley’s film is a completely new take on the Star Trek universe and not connected to any previous or current television series, movie or prior movie development projects.”
Deadline noted that while they haven’t been able to confirm it, “sources also add it’s likely that new characters will be featured in this version.” That would rule out another “reboot” of
The Original Series or any other previous Star Trek series. This report comes just two weeks after it was reported that Paramount was moving on from another attempt at a direct sequel to 2016’s
Star Trek Beyond, abandoning almost a decade of development hell to bring back the Kelvin Universe series led by Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk.
As for the “Star Trek Origin” movie from writer/director Toby Haynes (and produced by X-Men’s Simon Kinberg),
Variety speculates that film has met the same fate as a fourth Kelvin movie. As they colorfully stateD: “now both productions appear to be stranded in deep space with life support failing.”
This new project does feel like a completely fresh take for the new Paramount. There is no indication that J.J. Abrams, who produced the last three films, or his Bad Robot production company is involved. According to Deadline, Goldstein and Daley will be making the film under their GoldDay production banner.
A new duo with ties to Paramount and Skydance
According to the report, the new creatives “have shown a knack for delivering scripts with new and fresh takes on existing IP while also adding a fun and lightness that differentiated them from other films in the franchise.” The pair previously worked with Paramount on the 2023 film
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves (starring Chris Pine), which played well with fans and critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), although it only brought in a bit over $200 million, short of expectations. Recently, they worked with Skydance on the upcoming Cold War action comedy
Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds, which “tested through the roof in early screenings for Skydance and Apple,” according to Deadline.
There is no word on how far along the project is or when Paramount is targeting a release, but this news makes good on the new management team’s statements that bringing Star Trek back to the big screen is “
absolutely a priority.” Paramount is also reportedly interested in finding a way to treat the films and Trek TV on Paramount+ “holistically.” It’s unknown if that will work with this new movie and the current crop of shows being produced by Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout for CBS Studios.
