Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

Watched the first two episodes of Picard, and I'm tapping out. Some of the writing is decent but a lot of it is awful, the supporting cast is just trash, and jesus fuck at them retconning a major point from Voyager. I forced myself through the Mandalorian, I am not doing the same with a Star Trek product.

The Mandalorian was actually good

They're both on the same level for me, a lot of potential ruined by various factors. For Mandalorian it was crummy attempts at humor, sets that are remarkably low budget and some special effects that were just trash. For this one it's mediocre writing, bad supporting cast, and some serious retcon issues. But credit where it's due, Mandalorian did have a decent story and Picard obviously had the bank to pull off the special effects properly.

As a long time fan of both - Mandalorian was not offensive to me - it was pointless and a couple episodes were a drag but there was fun things to be had here - I really liked the prison ep. But following the movies it's nice to watch something SW and not feel it's ruining the legacy

Picard is full of things I hate - the future was suppose to be optimistic and bright and humans evolved. Now we got F bombs and a universe that hates Picard and robots with a super shitty federation wtf - so offensive and wrong. Nobody wants to see elderly picard get shit at by some admiral and shown no respect - and he didn't even go to space and explore yet wtf do they even know what star trek is. This is some soap opera that a bastardized version of Picard showed up in

To be fair, Star Trek spent a lot of time showing only the best sides of the Federation, it wasn't really until DS9 that we started to see how the surface was nice and shiny but in all reality there was a lot of dirty shit going on. And by now the Federation has gotten slapped around by the Borg several times, and spent a couple years getting it's shit pushed in by the Dominion and it's allies. So I'm guessing they've hardened quit a bit on the whole beatnik peaceful space force aspect and gotten way more into the "Fuck this, we're a military force now" side of things since even with the Romulans and Cardassians being at a severe weak point and the Klingons being full allies, the Federation is in no position to take anything for granted.

I'm trying to give this show a fair chance. I don't expect Picard to be his old self, nor do I want a lazy rehash of 90's Next Gen/DS9 style, it needs to evolve. I kinda liked the first episode, but what I'm watching is not Star Trek, especially by ep 3

This is Star "Women emasculate white privileged old man" Trek. WTF is this trash.

Not only are we getting pitiful acting from main characters, they are really dragging the good name of "JL" through the mudd (fuck that nickname btw) and the Federation with him. it's regressed generations (at its core), filled with assholes, and is seemingly ruled by angry women. The Federation would never turn their backs on helpless anyone, let alone Romulans, if there was a way. Nihilism strikes again!

The story is just all over the place too, feeling rushed, and unsure of itself. They're either cramming in exposition every second, or giving us lense flare drowned action sequences to distract us from inadequacies. After 3 episodes, it's mainly just a bunch of underdeveloped caricatures with a JJ Abrams inspired mystery box leading them nowhere.

I do like Stewart's acting for the most part, still has incredible presence. I like his Romulan helpers, and the Romulan spy guy (dude from Mr Mercedes) is pretty solid. I really like the intro music too.

Alex Kurtzman is terrible, as usual. His stink is all over this. I'm tired of clowns like him, and Rian Johnson, ruining storied franchises.

The actor who played Kahless has died.

A pretty good summary of some of the mysteries going on so far in Picard. Lots of things I missed when I watched.

This Ketwolski guy does great weekly summaries of episodes and just general trek news. Highly recommend his videos.

Anyone else catch the reference to the types of Romulans? Above are Picards "Housekeepers" who are ex Tal Shiar operatives. Picard saved themed, while on an away mission(takes place in the new Picard comic) They fell in love while on assignment together, which is forbidden by the Tal Shiar, and so the helped Picard, and he took them in.

Laris, the female, is the most common type of Romulan we see, and are physically very similar to Vulcans(Romulans, Vulcan, and several other species, are distantly related)

Zhaban, the Male, is referred to as a Northern. They are generally a little larger, and have the pronounced brow ridge, The Males are often Bald.

Elnor, male, are very similar, but they are usually long and sleek, kinda Elf like. His people are far more spiritual, than most Romulans.

latest

You also have the Remans, who have been isolated on the Dark Moon of Remus. They have telepathic abilities, similar to Vulcans. They have been used as slaves labor for Romulus, and have had several civil wars with Romulans.

The lead-in novel for Picard was released today. Only 3 chapters in, but so far so good. It does kinda suck that it is basically changing all the previous novels storylines, but going forward that want all the books and comics, to be considered canon and all tie in.

One thing they did confirm so far, is that Worf was promoted to Captain of the Enterprise E. Star Fleet did not want Picard using the Federation Flagship(and the Sovereign class is basically a heavy battlecruiser) as his command ship, and the Romulans have had bad experiences with that ship in the past. Therefore he takes command of the new USS Verity, as his new fleet, flagship.

Does that also confirm that the 2009 Countdown comic is un-canoned officially?

I'm guessing. I'm still a year before the supernova, where I'm at
I am confused by what you are saying.
The Romulan Supernova has definitely already occurred at the start of the Picard series.
The 2009 Star Trek film hasn't been "un-cannoned." The Kelvin timeline simply doesn't apply to the Picard series since it is part of the original timeline.

There's a comic called Countdown for the 2009 movie. Back in the day, there were some statements about the comic being Canon (which later were somewhat qualified).

So it turns out that the "inside sources" the Star Trek hating yet somehow popular channels like midnights edge, doomcock, nerdtastic, ect... These sites always make outrageous claim about having inside source working within CBS, who feeds them info about the impending doom of Discovery, Kurtzman, ect. Recent videos by them and articles steaming from there videos have said McFarlane and NBC were tryi g to buy Star Trek, and Alex Kurtzman has secretly been fired and replaced by Ronald D Moore, Ira Bher and Doug Drexler.

Turns out the "inside sources" have been 4chan posters. These posters have seen what control they have over these content producers, so have been making up BS for them to leak for years. Today the 4chan people exposed what they have been doing. So far no statements from the youtube creators
