Director chosen for the Picard pilot

Jean-Luc Picard Pilot Lands ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Director Hanelle Culpepper
By Vinnie Mancuso 13 hours ago

Last August, CBS All Access announced that Patrick Stewart, who either through science or unspeakable witchcraft has not aged since 1992, would reprise his Next Generation role of Jean-Luc Picard for a brand new Star Trek series. Now, the network has landed its director for the series’ first two episodes and it’s a bit of a history-making moment for the long-running sci-fi franchise. The Wrap reports Hanelle Culpepper will helm the pilot and episode 2, making her the first woman to launch a Star Trek series since Captain James T. Kirk and co. first set out into space in 1966.

Culpepper is no stranger to that particular corner of the universe, though, after helming two episodes of All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery. The director is a proven talent behind the camera, bouncing around the television landscape in recent years from Counterpart to Mayans M.C. to Supergirl to Gotham. She will also be in the director’s chair for an episode of AMC’s upcoming Joe Hill horror series NOS4A2.

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman had this to say about Culpepper coming aboard:

“Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character. I’ve been a huge fan of her work since she started with us on Discovery, and she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.”

Early plot details from Kurtzman have already confirmed that the Picard series takes place during the aftermath of the destruction of Romulus—we saw it happen in J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek movie, written by Kurtzman—an event that “radically altered” Picard’s life. When the show was first announced at “Star Trek: Las Vegas”, Stewart explained why he felt it was the right time to return to the role:

“During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”

Haven't seen the latest episode yet. Watched Orville last night and it actually managed to surprise me partially.

News on the Picard show: character sketches!

https://screenrant.com/picard-star-trek-series-character-breakdowns/
Orville was solid. It kinda feels like they re setting up the show, so if it ends on season 2, it will tie up loose ends. Hopefully not, because I do enjoy the show for the most part. It's gotten pretty mixed ratings, but it will get a huge tax credit if they do season 3, so they have that going for them.

I'm taking these Picard cast leaks with a big grain of salt. I've never heard of the site leaking it, and they are pretty basic and bland descriptions. Filming starts in 5 weeks, so we should start hearing some casting news soon, hopefully

Details For Star Trek Picard Series Emerge, Including Possible Title

The new Star Trek series starring Sir Patrick Stewart returning to his Next Generation role of Jean Luc-Picard continues to take shape, with a few new details on the upcoming production coming to light.

Shooting reportedly starts April 14
The latest issue of Production Weekly – a reliable industry newsletter – has some more details for the upcoming Picard show’s production. According to the report, the Picard show will begin shooting on April 14th with production going for five and a half months, with a planned wrap on October 1st. While this is a shorter production run than the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery – which ran about eight months – the Picard series is expected to have fewer episodes, with the first season being described as a 10-hour movie.

Santa Clarita will be home to Picard show
In December it was reported that unlike Star Trek: Discovery and Short Treks, the new Picard show would not be shot at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada, with CBS securing $15.6 million in tax credits to shoot in California. According to the new report, the production will be based at Santa Clarita Studios. SCS is an independent studio production facility based in Santa Clarita, California, around 35 miles north of Paramount Studios in Hollywood, where most previous Star Trek TV series and films were produced.

The selection of SCS may explain Patrick Stewart’s curious comment last monththat the show would be shooting in “the middle of California.” While the era of peak TV has made studio space in the Hollywood area sparse, the choice of Santa Clarita Studios may have been by Sir Patrick himself, who is also an executive producer on the series. Stewart is familiar with SCS, having shot his two-season Starz comedy Blunt Talk there in 2015 and 2016.

SCS has 16 stages and has been in operation since 1987. CBS has used SCS in the past, including shooting five seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations there. Santa Clarita Valley is a popular destination for film production, touting nearly half of all permitted location activity in Los Angeles County. The video below gives an overview of Santa Clarita Studios.

Picard show may be called “Star Trek: Destiny”
The title of the new Picard show has yet to be officially announced. However, the Production Weekly report lists the title of the series as “‘Star Trek: Destiny’ (aka ‘Star Trek: Picard’)” with the working title listed as “Drawing Room.” “Picard” has been a shorthand used by people involved in the show to talk about it, although Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green recently indicated the show could actually use “Picard” as a title.

It’s important to note that CBS has not confirmed Star Trek: Destiny as a title, although it is one of a number of titles that CBS has trademarked over the last year. CBS has also trademarked other titles including Star Trek: Revolution as well as a number of others more obviously tied to other shows that have been or still are in development, such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. So for now, take “Destiny” as a possibility, but with a grain of space salt.

Casting has started
On Friday it was reported that CBS had tapped director Hannelle Culpepper to helm the first two episodes for the Picard series. As of yet, the only confirmed member of the cast for the show is Sir Patrick Stewart himself, returning to play Jean-Luc Picard. But with cameras set to start rolling in six weeks, that should be changing soon. Replying to a question about if casting had begun on Twitter, Culpepper confirmed it has already started.

Calling it Destiny would make sense, but at the same time be a bit unfortunate given the unrelated and brilliant Destiny book series. (btw @Adamant did you ever read it?)

Great to see casting is rolling.

Michelle Hurd played in a Beyond Belief episode in the second season of the show, which Jonathan Frakes hosted at the time (unlikely they ever worked together though).

Santiago Cabrera - I remember him from Heroes, his character was pretty stupid. Not his fault, though.

I started TNG for the first time a few weeks back. In the middle of the third season.

Youd think they would stop using the holodeck, with how many times it's malfunctioned.

Also, Data is the best character. Riker is an old throwback to Kirk. Troi is hot but annoying.

Watch Deep space 9 and then this, you'll see it. Funny enough DS9 females had way more balls and brains then these dyscovery emo idiots.

Especially The curly haired fat chick, she's repulsive this season.
I have, many time. Still not seeing how they are SJW or emo idiots.

Enjoy, TNG just keeps getting better through its run. I'm jealous, you get to watch it all for the first time. Enjoy DS9 next. All the trek series have something to offer, and all have there great moments.(and a few clunkers too)

Exactly. @The Diplomat DS9 is a little bit tough to get through the first two separate, but the reward is real. But be sure to watch TNG first.

Yeah, it's good so far. I watched the majority of the first season (Big Goodbye is my favorite), then kinda skipped around the second season. But the third is where it gets real good.

I still have 4 more seasons to get through before starting the TNG movies. Ugh lol

Best of both worlds is to come.....

Rumored Picard show character breakdown.

Warning, potentially massive spoilers.
That Hashtag Show reports having gotten its hands on character breakdowns for the show’s core cast. These breakdowns are not confirmed, but taken at face value they tease some interesting additions to the Star Trekmythology.

  • Patrick Stewart is already confirmed to return as Jean-Luc Picard. There have been hints that Picard is no longer a Starfleet captain as the new series begins. That Hashtag Show’s reporting doesn’t offer any new details to that.

As for new characters, the first is Starton. “a male of any ethnicity in his early 30s. He specializes in positronic brains and is terrified of space. He’s charming in a self-deprecating way and is excited about the research opportunities on Picard’s mission.”

It is interesting that the Picard would enlist an expert on positronic brains for his mission. Dr. Noonien Soong created positronic brains for use in the creation of his androids, such as Data, Lore, and B-4. Fans can speculate about whether Starton’s involvement hints at a relationship between Picard’s mission and Dr. Soong’s legacy.

Next Connie, “a female who is also in her early 30’s. She’s African-American and has a quick temper, but is also quick to forgive. In addition to dealing with the loss of her husband, she is also avoiding a death sentence on her home planet. She’s a mercenary pilot who uses her ship to transport people to and from an artifact of some kind, though the ship is massively overqualified for that job.”

Then there’s Lawrence, “a handsome man in his 30’s of any ethnicity. . . who has a dodgy moral compass. He’s the pilot of the ship Picard takes on his mission. Being a capable (and enthusiastic) thief, his loyalties are questionable.”

It sounds like Picard is associating with much shadier people than he did during his Starfleet days.

One of the more interesting breakdowns is for Dr. Smith, who is “a male in his 30s or 40s of any ethnicity.” He’s described as, “a hologram who helps the crew through emergencies encompassing engineering, tactical, science investigation, and medical issues. He was programmed to learn but not become too self-aware. He’s calm, efficient, and empathic, but he sometimes has difficulties sorting out others emotional reactions to get at the facts.”

As That Hashtag Show speculates, this does sound like an updated version of the Emergency Medical Hologram. Robert Picardo played the EMH, called the Doctor, in Star Trek: Voyager.

The youngest lead character is K’Bar, “a 17-year-old Romulan and the only child of what’s a mainly female Spiritual Order. A martial artist and considered a lethal weapon, he’s prone to mood swings and is committed to living in the moment with as much transparency as possible. He takes his devotion to Picard and his mission EXTREMELY seriously.”

This is an interesting one. Producer Alex Kurtzman already confirmed that the destruction of Romulus is a life-changing event for Picard. That this young Romulan is so devoted to him may be a hint at how that change manifests. K’Bar would also the first Romulan core cast member in a Star Trek series.

There’s also Indira, “a female in her early 20s of any Ethnicity. She’s extremely smart and physically agile . . . but maybe not so mature and a bit socially challenged because she tries too hard.”

Lastly, there is Alana, “a female in her mid-40s to mid-50s and is of any ethnicity. She’s a brilliant analyst and has a great memory despite abusing drugs and alcohol. Often times she gets irritated with her own vulnerability and is certain of herself, even when she’s wrong. A former intelligence officer, she sees conspiracies everywhere. Her professional and personal losses weigh heavily on her.”

Putting this together, it seems Picard may be putting together a crew for a mission unsanctioned by Starfleet. The mission seems to involve a mysterious artifact. It is exciting to wonder what Picard has gotten himself into.

Wow, tonight's episode of Discovery was the best episode of Trek in 20 years. Fantastic stuff.

Really looking forward to watching it tomorrow night.

Watched Orville with the wife tonight. What a strong showing again, I feel like I need to marry Seth MacFarlane in addition.
