The Rock needs an iconic film

see, like here. He's huge but not scary even in these potentially iconic moments. Just a big guy saying something.

What does scary have to do with iconic? You really think Arnold was scary at all with his ridiculous accent and cheesy one-liners all the time?

he should do the next XXX movie and carry that series for awhile.

He'll never make it without the porkchop sideburns and $500 pajama shirts.

The problem isn't even The Rock, the problem is that at this day and age, the landscape of Hollywood simply doesn't allow icon-making movie to be made, both in terms of financial consideration (big budget movie must be suited for all ages) and fear of social backlash from feminazis.
Agree with this.
The best example would probably be John Wick, who is a very popular and memorable action character but he's no John McClane or John Rambo....or even a John Matrix.

he needs to (but wont do) an R rated dark movie

cop killer
murderer
rapist
alcoholic gambler

something alon those lines...like matt mac in Killer Joe...a cop who side hustles as a killer for hire

Dwayne Johnson is the Brendan Frazer of the 2010's.

But Brendan Frazer had an iconic role already.

My point was that Dwayne is doing the same kind of movies that Brendan was doing.
Best exemple is Brendan did Journey To The Center Of The Earth and Dwayne did Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

The Rock only works with films with a touch of comedy that don't try be too serious. Has he ever even been in a serious role?

He just doesn't have that X factor that Stallone and Arnold have. There's a softness to him even when he acts tough. You'll find him in a lot of tough/funny roles. It's too diluted. Even when he's huge, he still looks soft

I think he can pull it off if given the right role. Gridiron gang wasn't his typical "look at me I'm the Rock" movie and he had to step away from his normal comfort zone a bit. He's not Tom Hanks but I wouldn't sell him short either

Excellent analogy. He needs to do a Matthew McConaughey and lose half his bodyweight. Or play a transvestite like Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club. @BisexualMMA

Wesley Snipes tried that with Wong Foo. The Rock better bring some real game if he's gonna go the gay way.

Otherwise, at best it will be a forgotten project like Eric Roberts and It's My Party. At worst...it will be the gay version of Keanu Reeves and his accent in Dracula. And I know he played a gay dude in Be Cool, but I have a hard time imagining that performance as the main character in a serious drama.

I like the Rock.

It's crazy how succssful he's become. Watching him back in the day in WWF, he was always the wrestler with the most charismam

I get what TS is saying, but movies and Hollywood and how people view them aren't the same as they were in the Arnold and Stallone days. There really aren't any more big, mega stars.
What star of today compares to Pitt, Smith, Cruise, or Jolie?
It's all about franchises and sequels and prequels now. Individual actors don't sell movies like they used to.

The Rock could be doing a lot better though. He should be choosing his movies A LOT better than he does. Baywatch, Rampage, Earthquake movies, Escape to the center of the Earth 2? These are all B- movies that he should be doing OCCASIONALLY between big movies.

Maybe Black Adam will be his real breakout role? Nice guys playing bad guys usually created a lot of buzz

He's pretty iconic in Pain and Gain

If you havent seen that movie drop everything you're doing and watch it because it is excellent beyond measure

Iconic?

I mean, he did a decent job with his role and the movie was all right. But the word "iconic" never comes to mind when I think about Pain and Gain or the performances therein.

Only films I can think of that I enjoyed of his are Hercules, Rundown and Pain and Gain. Nothing exceptional but all light comedies that I found entertaining.

Also wan't he cast for Shazam? Maybe this will be his iconic role?

Cinematography? Insane

Dialogue and sense of humor? Fantastic

Physicality? Classic Rock.

Unless you expect his classic film to look like a serious realism drama or historical period piece, it's easily his most effective comedy vehicle

I know Rock has done a lot of 'big funny guy' roles, but he's done serious stuff too.
I don't remember him as a funny guy in Faster, Walking Tall, or the Rundown. And he does good playing the straight guy/drama in the Ballers HBO show.
