The Rock needs an iconic film

Be honest, if The Rock appeared in porn the majority of you would watch it just to see what The Rock was cooking.

Can you remember the name of the character he played in the rundown or walking tall? I can't.

I'm thinking more along the lines of an iconic main lead character like rocky, dutch, rambo, conan, etc.

If someone says Hercules, I still think of Kevin Sorbo, not The Rock. He doesn't have an iconic character/movie that he will be remembered by.

I think of him as The Rock on every movie because he was a household name as The Rock before movies.

Stallone was a nobody before Rocky and people still call him Rocky/Rambo.

It's not really apples to apples

The Rundown is still one of the most underrated movies of all time.

Maybe they need to make an action movie and have his name be "Rock"

I never understood people's obsession with The Rock as an actor.

They’re wrestling fans, so they’re always pulling for him to do well.

I’m not a wrestling fan at all, but I’ve definitely liked a few of his movies. I thought he was fantastic in Central Intelligence and outshines Kevin Hart, who was the star and also probably wrote it. It was a good movie all around.

The problem isn't even The Rock, the problem is that at this day and age, the landscape of Hollywood simply doesn't allow icon-making movie to be made, both in terms of financial consideration (big budget movie must be suited for all ages) and fear of social backlash from feminazis.

UM

actually

thats THE MUMMY 2

SO TECHNICALLY

NOTTTT the same film

He definitely has a bit of that 'Ryan Reynolds' thing going on where he is meant to be a strong ripped lead but is a bit soft/jokey. Reynolds found his place with Deadpool and Van Wilder and just fully embraced it, but maybe Rock can harden the fuck up and make it work? I think he is definitely charismatic enough and he can still be a domineering physical force. Just needs a role that leaves the comedy at the door and is setup to make him shine.

Closest thing he had was Hercules but they still turned that into a "big funny guy" film.

Dwayne Johnson already had that iconic role that he dominated and made his career.. it was playing "The Rock"

I think that’s what they were trying to do with the F&F spin off featuring Hobbs.

If the right script comes through he could also make waves as the villain when he becomes Black Adam.

The only anything that he has been in that entertained me was welcome to the jungle movie

He's working on a movie now that is basically "Die Hard meets Backdraft with The Rock" but it looks like it could be the grittiest thing he's done since Faster. Maybe I'm just buying into his genius social media marketing but just the stills he's posted have me intrigued

I'm sure the Rocks okay with making millions per film. It's not in the cards for him to win an Academy Award for best actor. @BisexualMMA

Don't think he has too much to complain about in life. But I'm sure he'd like an iconic character - who knows, maybe he or some others even think Hobbs is one. But these movies he's making don't have the writing or direction to create such a character, even if he brought the acting to the table.

These empty spectacles aren't character-driven in the way that we saw with films centered around John McClane, Martin Riggs, Rocky or Rambo. Nor do they create a visual or conceptual world, or scenario, so unique and iconic that it elevates the lead(s) to iconic status, as with Alien, The Terminator, Blade Runner, Predator, etc.

They're mostly just entertaining, disposable, somewhat creatively bankrupt fluff.

It's probably Hobbs in Fast and Furious 5. He was badass and didn't come off as a softy/jokester like others have said in this thread. He completely changed that franchise from car race movies to action heists. It was already trending that way after F&F 4 but his character put it over the top and now those movies make 1 billion dollars each time. Before him they were making like 100 million.

Yeah I think because the break-out movies like Rocky and Predator were significantly risky. The actors were relatively unknown and weren't afraid to take chances because they had little to lose. The studios were game because the budgets were small.

The Rock, I think at this point is 'too-big' to be taking on an experimental role. Too much at risk. Therefore the movies he get are sure-fire money makers: formulaic and repetitive. He found commercial success in the big/funny guy niche so he keeps cranking out more.

Excellent analogy. He needs to do a Matthew McConaughey and lose half his bodyweight. Or play a transvestite like Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club. @BisexualMMA

I like the Rock, and I know he's a movie star, but I don't think I have watched him in anything for probably at least 10 years.
