Forget "pride" and "belts" and "records".

The reason prizefighters fight is in the title. They fight for the "prize". i.e. MONEY

Conor has taken very little damage outside of the Diaz fights, made a ton of money, and is adept at taking CALCULATED RISKS.

Call him a coward, call him a fake champion, call him whatever you want. He DID win both belts, he did fight for millions and millions of dollars.

Any fighter who had the opportunity, would do the same thing. Or else they're fools

You can do both. Fight for both the money and your legacy (pride, belts, records). Mayweather did it.

It's a fair point. Not everyone is willing to drop their sacred Conor hating jabs... but the man has done an outstanding job at being in the prizefighting game. Even the haters locked in the heaviest of denial can't really argue with that.

Not sure how you can call him the "smartest", but he's clearly the most successful.

Easily the smartest. He made more money faster than anyone else while taking very little damage along the way. He realized early on that hardcores (ie 90% of sherdog) have 0 bearing on your ability to draw or sell products. He concentrated on the casual fan who eats up antics and showmanship and expanded his monetary value to levels only boxers had seen before. All while flipping off the "hardcore" fans and laughing all the way to the bank. He was the only guy I have ever seen who ignored the minority of fans who care (hardcores) and embraced the majority who are only there for the ride. All before he was 30.

Not even close to the most successful. I can name 20 fighters at the top of my head that have had more success. He's made the most money but that does't mean he is successful.

Mcmackymackerton mac's macs macfully.

Don't hate, appreciate.

He is probably nowhere near the "smartest." Your evidence is pretty limited and superficial.

Also, a few words about the term "prize fighting." First off, that's not the official name of the sport, just a nickname that people love to use too often. Secondly, prize refers to championships, not just money.

Alright. List all 20 of them.

Pretty sure Sakuraba (natural welterweight) fought The Gracies, Vitor Belfort, Guy Mezger, Igor Vochanchyn, Wanderlei Silva, Kevin Randleman, Ricardo Arona, Mirko Crocop and Ken Shamrock just to prove the point that he could. Saku was pure heart, pure tactician who lived off challenges. Not the money, and not caring about the punishment he took. That's why Saku is still revered till this day as one of the greatest Legends the sport of MMA has to offer.

Don't think history will be that kind to Conor 0 title defenses and constant pick and choosing of "ideal" opponents.

Long Live Saku

In prizefighting, yes that is the only metric for success.

righttttt, whatever lies you have to tell yourself to keep sane

We aren't talking fight IQ or IQ in general. Yes Conor is the smartest MMA fighter so far. He made the most money in the shortest amount of time and effort (didn't defend his belt once). All these guys going to wars for a few thousand, they don't know their worth. Guys like Lawler. I like Lawler as much as the next guy, entertaining as hell (a warrior). But he is the type of fighter who is trading his health for your entertainment and he isn't getting paid enough. The guy should be doing what Conor did, demanding more money for what they bring to the table. They let the UFC tell them their worth. Conor didn't accept what the UFC said he was worth. He felt he was worth more and refused to fight until he got it.

Very smart from a business sense, but I care more about a fighter actually fighting and a champion actually defending, than I care about their business acumen.

He is very smart. I don't even have a problem with him not caring about his legacy.

The only reason Conor bothers me is because he is so overrated.

He is given undeserved credit for being this amazing fighter, and has been promoted into being the face of MMA, when in actuality he's not even the best fighter in his division. Call him for what he is, don't pretend he is some GOAT, or even anywhere close to being in contention for GOAT.

What he really is, is a DECENT fighter, nothing more, nothing less, who was very smart at promoting himself and was able to make more money than all the other fighters combined despite not being anywhere near the most skilled.

Is he the richest? Yes.
Is he the best/smartest at self promotion and picking his fights? Yes.
Is he the most skilled? FUCK no. Not even close.

You can but you don't have to and whether you do or don't doesn't determine whether you are smart or not.
