I was flipping thru channels the other day, my woman comes in to talk to me, and the TV lands on golf. I hate golf. But they just happen to be talking about this guy named Daley or something, who is supposed to be the best right now. He was about to win this big thing and his family was there.

Anyways, it made me think, if he wants his kid to appreciate golf, he can have his kid try to play golf. But with MMA, you don't just put your 6 year old in a pro cage and fight until someone drops.

Same with MMA fans. They never actually do the sport, ever. They have no idea of the true intricacies of the sport, because they have never been in that situation, and it's not easy to find that situation to put them in.

If MMA wants to continue its growth, this issue needs to be solved. How do you get normal people to know what is really at stake? What is really going on?

by this logic boxing'd have never existed.

Encountering fans that act like this moron when they're drunk is a problem

Were you flipping channels in 1997?

More fans should train. True, you can't get in the cage and experience it, but anybody can train BJJ and get somewhat of a feel for the sport. Plus, the more you know about what's going on, the more fun it is to watch, imo. The more you appreciate the sport.

I just watched this, last night, no joke.

I used to think it was a cool, deep movie about society and all it's problems. Now I think the main character was just a cry babywho hated his life and got pissed off and decided to take out the financial sector because he was dumb enough to buy expensive furniture from Sky Mall and shit.

According to Dana fighting is in our Dna so we know whats going on

Totally agree except I don't necessarily think it's much of an issue. I talk to grown men (whom I don't see as pussies) and they are shocked that I go to the gym and pay my fees to fight other skilled fighters willingly. I think it's something that's in a person or is not. I also think it adds to the aura of the fighters.

It's like people say, you can have Lebron James or tom Brady in a room but when the champ of the world walks in, people tend to gravitate towards him. It's being the verybest at something that most people aren't even willing to attempt. It takes a special person to even try to get good at fighting and I think that's why so many people, even those who are totally clueless, love to watch it

Dude, you can buy boxing gloves anywhere and just box. You might not be high level, but it's just padded hands. You can grasp what's at stake.

It's not submissions, kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, slams and cages.

As a matter of fact, your comment supports my post.

yea that is a common issue - people have no idea how difficult the sport is and how humbling it is - but most people dont have the inner strength to even try that kind of thing - its much easier to just sit around and judge others - this is where the typical angry fighter comments about 'fans sitting on their couch eating potato chips judging' comes from - but the fans pay money and they are interested, so it goes on

This is a good point, TS.

This really hits home every time you go to a bar and try to catch a PPV around a bunch of drunks. They always think they know everything and are very disrespectful about fighters. Of course it is all in good fun but you wouldn't hear half the shit people say in bars if they spent even just one hour of martial arts training in their entire life.

That is an element, but appreciation of everything, not just big KOs is pretty important. And even hardcore fans seem to not have a clue of what is really going on. I will hear and see people say all kinds of wild things, no where near accurate.

They just have never done it.
