The sprawl of Robbie. Not only will Robbie defend Maia's takedowns, but he will refuse to be pulled into guard, where Maia will look to hit his awesome sweeps. Then he will get tired and knocked out

This is coming from a giant Maia fan, moreso than Robbie, but I think Robbie is an awful matchup. The Robbie whom was choked out in Strikeforce is long gone. This one has been sprawling with Hendricks, Koscheck, and Macdonald

It's just crazy because Maia has pretty much taken down every single one of his opponents at WW. Could Robbie avoid being taken down? Possibly, but he'd have to fight the perfect fight against Maia.

Even though Robbie has improved immensely, I'm not sure he can handle Maia's ground game.

I'm a Maia fan too and I kinda agree, but you never know... Lawler showed great TDD against Wrestlers, but Maia also uses sweeps which can be kinda tricky if you don't know how to defend against them.

Lawler smashes people's faces into the mat with his sprawls.

He might have the most vicious sprawls ever next to CroCop.

You never know how it will go. I just hope Maia gets the next shot.

Matt Brown took Lawler down. Condit took Lawler down. Briefly, but still got him.

The biggest problem for Maia would be the cardio of Lawler. He can go 5 rounds no problem.

I will source the Maia and Macdonald fight. Even though Maia took him down in the first, it wasn't enough. He lost to the better fighter by cardio and jabs

Then there was the Silva fight. Sure it was a long time ago at MW but it will haunt me forever.

Yes he's improved and racked a stellar win streak. I always look forward to his fights... I just don't think he can take Robbie

Both times he trained for a striker. You think he will avoid Maia closing in like the black plague

I think people are starting to overrate Lawler's takedown defense a bit. Anyway, Maia's shot isn't your typical shot. He pretty much goes for a single-leg and just drags/powers you to the floor. It's like once he gets a hold of you he just bulldozes you. He also has some pretty slick trips and throws in the clinch. If he can get hold of Lawler without eating too many punches trying to close the distance, I think he can get him down. But that's a pretty big "if." I would really like to see this fight. It's kind of a throwback to the old days of the "discipline #1 vs. discipline #2"/"grappler vs. striker" fights.

Rory's bottom game and all-around grappling are a lot better than Robbie's.

The real problem is that Maia gonna win and UFC knows it

maybe,or maybe the things could go like Maia vs Nate, Robbie has heavy hands. It's a really good fight, you can't really tell how it's gonna end, they should make woodley win at least one more fight, a big one and let Maia fight Robbie, but well it is what it is

True true. But Rory is a black belt in BJJ, and he used that to survive (barely) on the ground vs Maia. Lawler is not as good as Rory at BJJ, so he could be in trouble if (big 'if') Maia got him down. Lawler has been tapped 4 times by BJJ black belts (not terrible, but significant) while Rory never has been tapped. Against Maia, Lawler would be facing a level of BJJ he hasn't dealt with since tapping to Jacare, so getting taken down once could cost him the fight.

Awesome username btw.

Sprawls wont really come into it as Maia is not a classic double-leg wrestler like Koscheck or Hendricks. All Maia usually wants to do is get hold of something, anything, to cling onto and chain TD attempts from, so a sprawl wont help Robbie if he's locked up with Maia, who is working for drags, trips, control, etc.

Not saying I think Maia will beat Robbie as Robbie's power-boxing game is a nightmare for Maia... but there's definitely a live chance for Maia in this fight. Anyone who can control and dominate guys like Fitch and Brown has a real chance vs Lawler.

I will buy 20 beers and smoke 20 bowls if Maia wins against Lawler and will document it

You don't need sprawl to avoid Maia's TD. Maia takes guys down from the clinch and with sing legs.

You dismiss the strikeforce Robbie as long gone but you reference very old Maia fights.
Aren't those long gone too :)?
