Leonard Cure, Oct 7, 2023, Camden county Georgia
This one is very recent and had its own thread for a couple days at least. Cure was convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. That disgusts me. Cure the as no angel prior to that false conviction racking up multiple robbery convictions and other crimes and because of those convictions he was sentenced to life, but no person should be wrongfully imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit-especially for 16 years.
To me, almost as bad as being wrongly convicted is the fact that he was given a pittance as payment for losing half his life-something like 800k.
That aside, Cure had been out for a while and was coming home visiting his mother when he passed by a police officer going well over a hundred mph, he was pulled over and things almost immediately went south.
A couple things happened that could have possibly prevented what happens next, but we will never know. The officer could have been a bit calmer or used some slightly different verbiage and explained his reasons for wanting at the rear of the truck, but he ultimately did nothing wrong. One thing you also have to realize is that highway noise is very loud-way louder than people think and you have to raise your voice to be heard. Regardless, cure wasn’t hearing it anyways.
He was speeding in excess of 100 mph and recklessly driving. Per scotus case PA vs Mimms, a police office can order a person out of a vehicle.
Why would an officer do this? For several reasons. 1. Because of highway traffic speeding by is a safety issue. 2. Because of the way Cure was driving, an officer may think he is impaired and want to get him to the back of the vehicle to conduct sobriety tests and or get him out of the car because he may try to flee with the way he was driving. 3. Because the officer is alone and that vehicle has not been checked for weapons and neither has cure. 4. The officer has that right and cure has to comply or get arrested for obstructing.
Cure begins to question why he should listen to the officer asking what authority he had to stop him and why. His response was that he was going over 100 and cures response is basically “so, that’s a ticket.” Deputy again orders him to put his hands on the vehicle or he will get tased. Deputy informs him that he is under arrest and that traffic offenses are criminal charges in Georgia. Cure says he’s not going to jail and is tased. He is tasered twice and it has no effect. Cure immediately starts flailing his arms and ripping at the wires and then goes on the offensive and begins attacking the deputy by pushing him towards traffic, grappling with him, and ultimately choking him. The officer pulls out a second non-lethal weapon and begins striking cure in the legs with a baton to no effect. Cure even says “yeah, bitch” as he is being struck and again while he is choking the deputy and right when he is shot. What you really have to remember is that this is all on the side of a highway with vehicles speeding by and one slip or shove, and you’re dead. Also, cure is a big and aggressive dude and his attacks on the deputy were not self defense but we’re intended to seriously harm or kill the deputy.
So while grappling, the deputy pulls out his service weapon and shoots cure once under the arm and into the heart. Deputy after a few tense moments begins life saving measures to no avail.
Commhnity and media response:
It was immediate and every single story focused on three things-cure being wrongfully imprisoned, his being black, and him being pulled over for an unknown reason. The video shows all of that and also explains why he was pulled over and arrested. The media continued to downplay cures attacks on the deputy stating “he put his hands on the deputy’s face. Really? That was a choke. The community was worse calling it an execution and the family hired my favorite ambulance chasing, race-baiting, chicken Hawk civil rights lawsuit king, ben crump. Below will be his press conference and the video.
My thoughts:
Cure was wrongly imprisoned and being told he was going to jail may have triggered some trauma ot ptsd. But his response immediately was dismissive and almost sovereign citizen like in his demanding to know why the deputy thought he could even pull him over. His attack was worse and very violent. The officer tried multiple forms of less than lethal tactics and tools to no avail. Shooting him on the side of that bush highway was necessary and justified. I have fought and chased people on the side of a highway and in traffic a few times. It is scary as shit and very dangerous. You can feels the cars and especially the semis flying past and it shakes the roadway and you.
I have two criticisms of the deputy. First, I think he came in a bit too hot. Not really bad, but it doesn’t help any situation. Yelling “get out” as your first words are not ideal. This is a reckless driving incident possibly dui but it is not a felony takedown or traffic stop. He should have gone to the opposite side of the vehicle so he could safely talk to him, explain why he stopped him and why he is telling him to get out of the vehicle. I am a big believer in explaining things very clearly and I have always found that if you explain your stance to people, it helps them understand where you’re coming from. My second issue is with the use of the taser initially. Tasers are for actively aggressive subjects. The second tasing was absolutely justified and when the taser should be used, however, for some reason, neither shot worked like intended. My thoughts on the first tasering are that you have to factor in that you are on a very busy highway with very fast moving traffic, so grabbing and trying to force an arrest of a subject who is refusing to be arrested is not wise. He does give warnings to cure who refuses to comply. He could have held him at bay with the taser until backup arrived, but when you use a taser that close with a perfect back shot, you expect it to work. Perhaps he was a bit too close to get a big enough spread of darts to have the desired nmi(neuro muscular incapacitation). Narrow spread means less muscles affected.
As usual, crump is being himself and a piece of shit. They will try to sue, guaranteed. The county will probably settle as usual to avoid a jury possibly fucking this up.
The video of the traffic stop and fight.
Go to the five min mark. This is where it gets good. crump in his marbled mouth southern drawl calling for “troof” and you will hear from attorney “sef” (Seth)-begins saying that leonard escaped one injustice to then face another “bias” and then raises his voice and says he and his brother were talking about how he wouldn’t have been killed if he was white “over a traffic stop” and calls for justice for leonard. They also say that cure was live-streaming this from Facebook live and they demand the release of that video and want to know why it was taken down and there is a slight inclination of possible legal action against fb. Jesus Christ this guy is a bag of shit.
response from the family immediately after video is released. Brother still says his brother was murdered and crump is waiting for a decision from the prosecutor office to see if charges will be filed against the deputy.
