Yeah, look at the EverydayDad, makes youtube videos reviewing cameragear and most of his outside videos look like utter shit. His (indoor) studio setup is well filmed but his "outside" vlogs with some quite expensive cameras look very amateurish. How can you say which camera is the best then, if you make them all look average.
Youtube in general is a commercial machine. Lets watch 2 commercials followed by a sponsored guy's vlog who is praising a camera he is never going to work with because he really thinks it sucks.
Whilst this is true (I watch McKinnon when I can) these guys can’t get paid without doing what they have to, and to be honest I appreciate those that dare to quit a stable job with benefits/taking risks to try and make it away from the beaten path.
Having said that it’s the sheeple and dull minded people those paid commercials are aimed at influencing, if you know your gear and your photography/goals you will know what needs buying and what doesn’t, usually it’s a lens that needs to be bought and not an actual body and even then those are investments in craft.
Those channels do hurt the beginners though who believe in the people shilling for Canon/Sony whoever.
McKinnon himself has shown me some amazing premier and photoshop edits I wouldn’t have known otherwise but also I’ve never bought any of his luts or any youtubers merch for that matter.
Same goes for IG, I’ll follow someone because their photography or dogs interest me, not a follow for a follow or because I’m trying to emulate them.
If there is a market for influencing (which there is) then as long as it’s legal it’s fair game, I work for a global automotive company and milking trends and influencing revenue is paramount, just how the world works.
But I’ll say it again, Jared Polin is a mediocre AT BEST photographer and his editing is barely beyond basic, that’s a man focused on being famous first and gear second, photography third.
I’ll also say though McKinnon has some real douchebag friends, that Hau guy is a complete shill and a bore.
