The Photography thread!

I've watched a bunch of photography related videos on youtube and have come across Jared's content. While he does offer some helpful advice for beginners, a lot of his content make him look like the Jake/Logan Paul of photography; style over substance sensationalism.
His photography and editing leave a lot to be desired for sure

He's got Eddie Bravo "looking into" EVF dynamic range as we speak.

Sherdog seems to love mountain photography and in that respect I'd recommend Shiro Shirahata's work, Japanese mountaineer photographer(with a large format camera no less) active in the 70's and 80's mostly and his books on the Himalaya(can be picked up whatin the background but photography of mountains.

Will look out for his books on my next Japan trip (in four days)

Honestly I never looked into the technical details too closely but to me when sensors have quite limited dynamic range RAW's seemed to have a more obvious advantage, these days it tends to be only when your talking really deep shadow lifting that RAW offers you something more.

I know I'v engaged a in plenty of it here but I have to say that generally theres too much talk about gear on the next not enough about art, watch fewer "fro" videos(although to be fair Polin isnt a bad photographer unlike Rockwell but seems to talk little about it) and more Andrei Tarkovsky films would be my advice.
Yeah I’m the last person to give advice like that too , not to be a dick but I’m not the type to run out and grab the latest and greatest, or even keeps up with it anymore.

I’m STILL shooting with my D3, and it does everything I need.

And like I mentioned I’ve even thought about buying another OLDER D series, because the small files would be better for ME in some cases.

And I still shoot film some.

I watch some Jared videoes occasionally because he’s funny.

Peter mkinnon is more my style for “artistic” shooting

I must admit I watch the odd Angry Photographer video because he reminds me so much of Wallace Shawn's character from the Princess Bride even if he's a bit of a nutcase and his portfolio includes rather too many dodgy shots of women at the beach.

"3D rendering? inconceivable!"

Each to their own, but imo Jared is a talentless douche.
I shoot raw because:
1. It’s more versatile
2. Jpeg just damages the files too much

Could you please flesh these out? I keep forgetting to shoot raw for my astrophotos. A significant portion of what goes into a great astropic is in the post processing.

The “raw” file , isn’t processed it’s ALL of the sensor data, what it actually sees.

The “jpeg” file is a condensed “camera processed” file version that has a lot of the data removed, which is why it’s so much smaller.

You can’t view a “raw” with out software that will read it, it’s not a “ready to be viewed” file in the way a jpeg is.

So you have more processing room, since it hasn’t been processed once already.

For Astro you plan to process, all shots should be in raw(unless you want a raw+jpeg save for some “quick ready to go files “ along with them.

All these youtube douches annoy the fuck outta me. Jared even more than the others. These guys are whoring for views so hard they basically make stretch videos by talking to talk, not to bring anything informative. To me most this new generation "jared polin/ mckinnon/ etc..." are just feeling like watching a seven to twenty minute long commercial where they talk about the products they get paid to talk about with some generic travel/ nature/ city b-roll.

I haven’t watched the fro in a long time, but he used to do some pretty neat stuff that was different from time to time, like buying an old ass used d1h and a used 50 and seeing what kind of quality shoot he could do today with newer raw software, and re-editing old raw files stuff like that has more interest to me than “camera ads”, which he started becoming more and more of.

McKinnon I haven’t watched in a long time either so I don’t know if he’s turned into a talking Camera add as of late but he used to focus on shot composition and different lighting scenarios etc. that kind of stuff I like at times to get new ideas, or to see a different take on how other people would do shots I’ve done before(like the city neon lights as accent light at night type of stuff).

I don’t watch any ones videos that are “gear focused” on the what’s new relm. Doesn’t interest me, have no plans to buy a new camera.

Potato jet has some funny stuff too, but I really haven’t watched a lot of photo based YouTube in a long while.

I watched a lot of stuff on video for a while, as I was trying to improve my video skills but kinda gave up on it. Lost the time to fuck with it really.

It seems like they all start out good, and over time transform into talking billboards for whatever free gear they get sent.

Which is pretty true for all the other genre’s out there as well.

I have a pretty simple rule, can the reviewer take good pictures? If I go to his online portfolio, am I going to see something good or unique & compelling or am I just going to see the same shit that I can find on any random hack's instagram page?

If it's a reviewer who focuses on the technical aspects of photography, he better be able to take some pictures which show me why those technical things matter. If he's writing some review on why 50 megapixel sensors are awesome and how they're so much sharper and better than everything else before yet his example pictures are no sharper because it was diffraction limited from using too small an aperture or micro-blurred from trying to hand hold it at the 1/f shutter speed, well, yeah. And that's just the basics, there's a lot of ways to screw things up and get results that either don't make sense or are flat out impossible due to the laws of physics. The vast majority of reviewers do not have the background knowledge and skills to carry out technical reviews.

Yeah, look at the EverydayDad, makes youtube videos reviewing cameragear and most of his outside videos look like utter shit. His (indoor) studio setup is well filmed but his "outside" vlogs with some quite expensive cameras look very amateurish. How can you say which camera is the best then, if you make them all look average.

Youtube in general is a commercial machine. Lets watch 2 commercials followed by a sponsored guy's vlog who is praising a camera he is never going to work with because he really thinks it sucks.

This guy's photography is good in my opinion, and he's not that annoying:

Oh yeah, Burling is awesome,
1) he makes you appreciate the art, not the gear
2) he knows his shit
3) no dubstep or shitty edm in his videos
4) he isn't spazzing out on aderall while trying to be a "brotographer"

He's why I bought a Sigma Merril DP2. ;)

Whilst this is true (I watch McKinnon when I can) these guys can’t get paid without doing what they have to, and to be honest I appreciate those that dare to quit a stable job with benefits/taking risks to try and make it away from the beaten path.

Having said that it’s the sheeple and dull minded people those paid commercials are aimed at influencing, if you know your gear and your photography/goals you will know what needs buying and what doesn’t, usually it’s a lens that needs to be bought and not an actual body and even then those are investments in craft.

Those channels do hurt the beginners though who believe in the people shilling for Canon/Sony whoever.

McKinnon himself has shown me some amazing premier and photoshop edits I wouldn’t have known otherwise but also I’ve never bought any of his luts or any youtubers merch for that matter.

Same goes for IG, I’ll follow someone because their photography or dogs interest me, not a follow for a follow or because I’m trying to emulate them.

If there is a market for influencing (which there is) then as long as it’s legal it’s fair game, I work for a global automotive company and milking trends and influencing revenue is paramount, just how the world works.

But I’ll say it again, Jared Polin is a mediocre AT BEST photographer and his editing is barely beyond basic, that’s a man focused on being famous first and gear second, photography third.

I’ll also say though McKinnon has some real douchebag friends, that Hau guy is a complete shill and a bore.

Damn, after watching that video I’m not sure if pressed, which one would I buy myself.

He says he likes the dp1 better, and I might also for the following reasons.

Cleaner low iso(but gives up higher iso capabilities to the newer)
Wider focal length (28mm is what I do “most” of my “street” shooting with that I would use this camera for)

Head scratcher draw backs.

F4 looses to the newer 2.8
Stops at iso 800 vs higher on the newer.

Damn, those are some hard choices.

I do like the “film “ look of the sensor.

The “raw” file type is a drawback however and would need to be converted before use in some softwares.

He didn’t mention does the video shoot in a “raw” video mode or is all video compressed.

Also how is the video, he mentions it’s bad, but how bad in your experience.

How does it compare to say a Canon powershot 120 for example in a cheap camera vs cheap camera head to head??

I’ve almost Bought some of McKinnons coffee, but I’m a coffee lover so I buy lots of “off the Wall” coffees anyway.

I picked up a DP1 Merill when they were selling them off cheaply a few years ago.

You'd definitely be advised to shoot RAW as the in camera processing is pretty poor but it does certainly punch above its weight for an APSC camera. Most obvious advantage I would say is in graduation of colour which might if anything be slightly smoother than my D850, so a good choice if your looking for quite subtle images there rather than jacking up the contrast massively. Ironically given the colour sensor I'd say its actually a better B&W camera for that reason.

Handling wise you can't get around it being pretty poor though and for that reason I only tend to use it when I really can't have a larger camera with me which isn't that often anymore.
