I've just read that originally the Wachowsky brothers wanted the humans to be the processors and simulators of the Matrix, basicly human brains were the computers powering and creating the Matrix, so as Morpheus began to awaken people from the Matrix he also withdrew power from the Matrix so that the Matrix would start to have glitches, become more uncanny/less real and the facade would be more noticeable to other humans.
But then they told them to dumb it down and they had to resort to the silly idea of humans as batteries.
''The original story had the brains of the humans being used as part of a neural network for additional computing power. But the suits thought that was too hard for people to understand. So instead we get them as batteries''
''This blew my mind when I heard it. Fixes so many plot holes in that movie, and makes so much more sense.

- The battery explanation requires you to ignore conservation of energy to make any sense
- Explains why humans are better suited than any other random animal (more brain power)
- Explains why humans have to be kept semi-conscious
- Explains why humans are able to affect the matrix (they're executing the code themselves)''
