Movies The Odyssey (2026) - First Trailer

This handsome stud will play a great warrior though.

I remember when the idea of Nolan doing the Odyssey was intriguing idea worthy of hype, it was 2025

Im amazed that Travis Scott pretty much got a pass after getting a bunch of his fans killed/sent to the hospital at his own festival and being arrested for fighting people on multiple occasions. Dude still somehow headlines Coachella and gets a Christopher Nolan role lmao.
Don't even get me started on what he did to Cody Rhodes. He's a monster.

I can't name one project, movie or series that ended up good after a race or diversity swap.

They did it in House of the Dragon with black characters and I thought ok maybe it ill turn out ok. But nope. Shit is retarded slop now.

Battlestar Galactica is an obvious one. Not to mention almost none of leading names in this movie are Greek, but it's only a bad race swap when it might be a black actress I guess. Bizarre logic.

Its not bizarre if you have a brain. Its about the degree of bad casting. A white non greek is still more Greek passing than a black actress which is just a smack in the face.

It's a mythical tale with no set script or author. I feel the way about Helen being black as I do about West Side story or any number of other adoptions of Shakespeare that change characters or plot beats.

It's not like there's a definitive original edition of Homer, it's all oral history that was changed for the particular audience of the day.

Its still set in a specific time and place in greek mythology. Are you saying you would have no issue if the whole cast were asians?
What's the time and place that Homers tales are set exactly?

And nope, I don't see any parts of Homers works where nationality or ethnicity are intrinsic to the plot and characters -- none of which are firmly historical.

They are set in the Mycenaean Greek bronze age. How is the actual setting of a story not intrinsic? How does a cast of asians work in the greek bronze age exactly?

If it's set during the Mycenean period, that narrows it down to about an 800 year period in a mythic tale that spans Africa, Greece and plenty of other territory between. (Note that Ethiopia is referenced multiple times in the story.) Best as we can tell, it was written a couple hundred years after, even though it was likely performed orally long before. Earliest full text we have is from almost two millennia after it was first written down. Hence me pointing out that it's far more myth than actual historical or real events. It was never even considered a historical record by Greeks.

The setting of the story doesn't really matter, it's about the journey (the titles kind of give it away) and character arcs.

Case in point: You're whining about how Helen of Troy can't be black even though she's literally a fictional character that's the daughter of Zeus. You can race swap any of the characters, and as long as it's still got the main plot beats and themes, it's an adaptation of the original stories. Just like West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, which is far closer and related chronologically than when Homerian poems were created and then finally written down.

You are clear that when recited orally each retelling was different and heavily ad libbed, right? There's no set "original version" of the Iliad. Doesn't exist, never existed.

Its an 800 year period still told from a greek perspective. The identity of the myth is greek so matter how much you struggle to deflect. The fact it's a myth rather than historical is also totally irrelevant because what matters is the setting and context of the mythical story not whether it actually happened. It is a Greek story with a Greek identity.

That's like saying braveheart, 12 Years a Slave, Schindler’s List would function exactly the same with any casting. Lets make william wallace an african because it wouldn't change the main plot beats and it was historically inaccurate anyway right? The amount of leg work you are doing to subvert such a established historic piece of work to inject your ideological bs is fascinating to be honest. Show some respect and leave it the fuck alone.
