The narrative that Volkanovski did more damage?

But seriously, are we really counting the punches Volk “landed” when Islam took his back? Do you think that someone punching backwards, over his head, with zero leverage, was doing damage? I feel like that’s why you have to give Islam rounds 1 and 4. Then it’s a question what which other round did Islam win on the feet. I’d say Islam won round 3. I feel like giving Volk round 4 based off the backwards punches is really reaching.

I'm glad we had this opportunity to chat. It turnz out there's actually a large variety of damaging strikes that can be reckoned between the levels of "insignificant... to ref stopping strikes" that are completely valid & damaging as well as being one of 2 of teh primary scoring criteria for most decisions.

obviously
<mma3>

Notice: Mak didn't need the swole tool on that right cheek between rounds prior to round 4... but he did after. That was where Volk was striking while his back was taken, & all our opinionz on how hard those strikes were are trumped by that physical proof. They were damaging & so were significant.

So the "end swell" made its first appearance in Maks corner after the 4th round? Lmao!

That is a damn persuasive argument that those punches were in fact effective.

I don’t think a single punch he had counted officially. The only punches he was credited with that round were on the feet. It was like 6 strikes or something.

Edit: he wasn’t credited with a single significant ground strike that round. He had 6 significant strikes total all were from distance and Islam had 4 significant strikes total. Lame ass round with lots of taps by both.

I agree!!! I'm glad someone recognizez that finally... well done!!! I've told that to several "non-believerz" but they're already so convinced they're right... that they act like it doesn't mean anything. As if that swole too was just brought out for show or something... lol...

They actually used it on his forehead between 3 & 4... but teh forehead didn't get any of that between 4 & 5... it was all on the cheek that Volk was pounding on at the end of the round.

By quick count... Volk landed 2 dozen light pitty pats including flailing backfists, (which what the non-believerz seem to be keying off of)... but you can see Volk skootch sideways a bit & just pelt him right in that cheek a good 8 times in that sequence. It looks agressive & impactful... & the impact is proven by the post round treatment.

I mean there was only one guy who was breathing heavy and got punched easier and easier by the second when the fight was finished. Lucky that it wasn't for a little longer.

Other than that, I know that Josh was hurting in his body when that was over. But I wouldn't guess Yair would have the same timetable.

That guy won the fight. No point saying 'coulda woulda shoulda' the man made it to the end of the 5th round and volk didn't do enough to win the fight. ... Islam could have needed a nebuliser at the end of round 5....it doesn't matter... For 5 rounds he bested volk. Sherdog gers living in alternate reality where fights get judged for what may have happened.

Islam fans grasping onto anything at this point to defend their boy. If you knew your boy won, you wouldn’t feel you have to go to such great lengths to prove it.

People who dont train all that much read too much into superficial bruising, nose bleeds, and minor cut. Some people mark up easily. Look at the diaz bros. The reality is while yes, it's nice to see that stuff and go "he got fucked up!", the most damaging stuff tends to be the hardest to notice.

It was a close fight all around. People just have an obsession with things being in clear cut one sided boxes. Not everything is an absolute but people will struggle with that concept for a loooong time
The Diaz brothers get beat up every fight. Not a great example. Better example is Fedor or maybe gsp

They didn’t count as significant strikes but they definitely counted them in the total strikes, 49 of 66 for Volk in rd 4.

There are fights that the Diaz bros are doing more damage than their opponents. Doesn't change how they look. That's why I used them. Usually if GSP or Fedor get marked up, they genuinely had a rough night

That’s how strike totals work. They weren’t seen as anything of substance and clearly nobody gave Volk that round without crazy talk. Still being held in a body triangle while someone is basically resting and not trying to do anything is meh.

Islam tried Volk defended

Half hearted, he looked tired and content holding him and didn’t really work very hard trying. I’m not dissing him he won the round and it was smart to conserve there and ride out the round. He won the round in an unpopular way, but still won it.
