The Moment When The Ref Saved Usman From Maia

I'm a huge Maia fan. It was a bit premature, but it didn't look like Maia had a plan for escaping that whizzer that Usman had. Usman's arm was pretty well lodged in there. I don't see any reason why Usman wouldn't have rode out the round in that position.

Maia is an all-time great.
Fought for the title in two different weight classes and "lost" both times because both champions were running from him.
And yes, that was a bad call by the ref. Referees shouldn't be concerned with what the crowd wants to see and should just apply the rules.

"You can't just hold him into that poisition" dude should lose his licence and never be involved in the mma scene ever again.

Yeah Maia was not going to get his back. there was also only a minute to go in that round so yea.
Doesnt mean anything at all, it's a fight sherlock.. you don't have some baboon interfering you in a real street fight now, when it's 1v1.

I forgot about that...horrible!

As TS asked for other examples..
Belfort x Johnson

Eazy...

Genki vs Bang

also:

- Handy vs Hizzo 1
- Gomi vs Azeredo

Anderson beat Maia in every conceivable fashion and had him but scooting in desperation. His shall we say "antics" the final two rounds were about his stupid Brazilian obsession with disrespect or perceived disrespect. Thank God he got over it.

I doubt he would've been able to get a sub there.

But yeah, MMA is full of incompetent refs and judges.

People forget that Maia won the 1st round. Did Usman drop any other rounds between that and Colby? No right?
Shit break but I didn't see anything that suggested Maia was actually going to get to his back. Maia probably rides out the round in that position with Usman holding onto the whizzer.
Ultimately this... but yeah... shit break is the most important part.

Maia wasn’t doing enough to improve his position. He had the position for minutes and resorted to punching Usman in the ass?!?

Yea, the ref had the right to that break up shit up

tbh idt Maia could have done anything else in that position. Heck he started to throw pitter patter shots to Usman's butt. He was pretty much starting to do what Usman did to Tyron/Mas1, wall and stall.

Agreed.

Maia always finishes best when his victims are dry.
