Economy The Miraculous Transformation of the San Francisco Bay Area

I have never been to Sam Fran. No desire to go because I don’t really like really big cities. I love Pittsburgh, but nothing bigger. The fact that you can be making over 200k and still can’t afford a house around there is insane. The house we live in we bought for 400k. In California, it would be a 2 million dollar house.

And crime is an issue there. The crime stats might say that crime is down, but they quit responding to non violent misdemeanors such as car break ins, which are so frequent that people there leave their cars unlocked so the windows aren’t broken. That’s a fucking issue in my book. Their DAs are so fucking soft that they refuse to prosecute non violent misdemeanors. Plus the fucking homeless issue is really bad
You've never been? It's the most beautiful city in America. Give yourself a treat and someday splurge on a long weekend there. Walk on the Golden Gate Bridge, do the Alcatraz tour, take in some world class restaurants and bakeries, picnic in Golden Gate Park, golf the Presidio and get some tacos in the Mission.

I promise you will love it. It's actually not a very big city, 700k population I think. It's seven miles by seven miles only.

Stop with the scare tactics. Crime will happen with large populations anywhere. I keep hearing "you can't walk down the street without being accosted" crap and it just isn't reality. People that buy into that haven't gone outside of their own state.

I've visited twice. 2010 was Ok, but I was surprised by the lack of night life and nowhere to get breakfast before 10. I'd come from a month in Sydney where I'd go for a run at 6am and then eat at 7 with dozens of places to choose from within a square mile.

I went back in 2018 and the decline was shocking. It was nowhere near as bad as reports make it sound, but it was filthy and resembled the walking dead with so many crackheads about.

Dare you to leave a backpack, purse, or bag in the backseat of your car in San Francisco.

Money would be an issue. First, you have to fly which is expensive, but I have three kids, so that’s five tickets right there. There is lodging and food would be very expensive for five to eat out-though I am sure the food would be fantastic. For the couple of thousand it would cost, I would rather go to the beach for a week. I am sure it is beautiful and iconic with the hills and bridge, but I don’t have the money for that kind of trip.

Southwest Airlines has kid flying free. I am just saying if you like Pittsburg you would frigging love SF.

I understand the beach vacation though, great to do with the fam. Very relaxing.

Its near the bottom of my list of cities that I would consider living in.
Which cities HAVE you lived in across the US?

Parts of SF I understand like Tenderloin you just don't go to, but I was warned about areas in Norfolkand was fine.

Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf as I saw it not too long ago was still lovely.

When were you there last?

cousin lives there, we visit often over the past 20 years. The places we have been were all clean and just normal big city stuff. I never really understood the flak SF got when it has a lot of cool places to visit and things to do.
It's the biggest China Town outside of China. People who've never been there scream about it clutching their old women pearls. Some of it isn't great but the thriving areas are still gorgeous.

San Francisco, even with its residents, is known as a city to work in more than live or visit. Is what it is with the economy there.

Do you live in San Fran?

The homeless issue is real. The theft issues are real. However, some data has changed, so thank you for challenging me to look it up and correct my mistake. And you’re right, in any big city, you can certainly find crime if you want to. In my opinion, the theft and car break ins issue is related to homelessness and drug issues. Unchecked addiction leads to more crime-usually theft related to feed their habit. Lax prosecution emboldens criminals because their actions go unpunished, but it appears that San Francisco is changing some of that, which is showing results.

I just looked up car break ins, and before I could type “in San Francisco” it popped up as the second search. Apparently, car break ins are at a 22 year low, however, in 2022, there were 22,000 car break ins and an estimated 8,000 that weren’t reported to police because they weren’t being prosecuted or investigated.

The drop in car break ins is attributed to several things-police using plain clothes officers, bait cars, thousands of installed cameras, and drones. Also, the law has been changed regarding break ins. It used to be that the car had to be locked and the prosecution had to prove the vehicle was locked and now, they just have to prove the vehicle was entered and something was stolen. Imagine that the state law was that it wasn’t illegal unless the car was locked!!

Another change in San Fran was the ousting of DA chesa boudin after a recall because his progressive policies were leading to more crime. I used to follow all the progressive district attorneys to see if their polices worked or not. chesa was on my list of top five worst DAs along with phillys larry krasner, NYC alvin bragg, Chicago kim fox, LA george gascon.

Could have been a great city.

The government ruined it. Immigrants, drug dealers shooting up in the streets, poop and heroin needles all over the sidewalks, tent cities, get robbed regularly, etc.

Also expensive. You can live somewhere nice for half the price.
People have a hard time grasping the subjective nature of residence.

City life isnt for everyone.

If you live in a dessert suburb of New Mexico or in the sticks of Kentucky, a major international city is probably not for you.

The same way the boonies wouldnt appeal to someone enjoying living in a prosperous, busy city

I have a 15 year old, 12 year old, and a 7 year old. Doubt they would fly for free. But traveling anywhere is expensive with 3 kids. This year, we went to South Carolina-we ALWAYS go to North Carolina, but changed it up this year and won’t likely do that again. And we went to Tennessee to gaitlinburg and Dollywood. And my oldest went on an Alaskan cruise with my mom. We are all tripped out this year.

Well, I sure as hell wouldn’t live there. Too expensive for one. I hate traffic for two. And I am not sure I would love living in Cali for three. My area is way too conservative for my wife and I tolerate it, but I feel like Cali would be way too liberal for me to survive

I currently live in the Chicagoland area. I did a stint in the Navy during the early 2000s and was stationed in San Diego. But we went up and down the west coast.

I'm sure its fine for a visit but I wouldn't want to live there. The cost of living is insane. Not mention they tax, ticket and otherwise over regulate the average guy while symotaniuosly allowing the homeless to do whatever they want.

It really isn't the nightmare I assume Fox Lose portray it to be. I really miss it, I wouldn't willingly go there if I believed everything on the news.
