Metal/Rock/Industrial The metal thread \m/

So pumped for this tour coming up. Somehow still haven't seen Deicide or Rotting Christ yet, so I'm excited, especially since Deicide are one of my favorites.

a lot of old bands still putting out good shit? most of the time their creative spark is gone by that time and its just a cash grab. i cant name any old school great thrash band that put out a good album in their later career. closest i can think of is Exodus back in like 2004. i can name so many more failures and misfires.
the thrash thats OK nowadays has to borrow from black and death metal to be interesting. ive been around long enough that i remember the thrash "revival" around 2005-2011 when bands like Municipal Waste got really big. and thats over a decade old now - that stuff was derivative back then. so how derivative is today's thrash, i wonder?
best new-ish thrash oriented band i have heard is Ripper and they are certainly death metal influenced.
ive just seen and heard so much thrash metal that it really takes something special to hold my attention. its cool that you have a good local scene but since im not there i cant experience that, so i cant judge it.

here's some Ripper

I believe Exodus' Exhibit A, B and Shovel Headed Killing Machine have damn fine shredding between Holt and Altus and are not exactly repetitive.... agree with the rest though.

That's like YOUR OPINION. I'll continue to listen to Thrash and go to Thrash shows. I'm not the only fucking person there either, it still has every bit of a healthy following as Death Metal or any other Metal genre. I like Thrash speed, I like Thrash riffs, I like Thrash crunch, I like Thrash drumming rhythm. I could care less if something is "derivative" of the old shit, I WANT IT TO BE.

The same exact shit can be said for Death Metal, and for some reason when Death Metal branches out into other genres you guys claim that as a commendable feature, but when Thrash Metal does it, it suddenly doesn't count as Thrash anymore. That makes no fucking sense.

You were "old enough to remember 2005-2011" I was old enough to remember the 80's. I was around with Death Metal was fucking invented.
death metal and black metal have a lot more room, creatively, than thrash does. i mean, think about the difference between a band like Von or Beherit and a band like Abigor or Dissection. i cant really come up with such a stark difference in sound when i think of thrash. if you can, i am all ears. always down to hear stuff i havent heard.

i like metal that branches out and is weird and tries to do odd things. i think metal is at its best when its weird. with thrash you have some cool bands like Blind Illusion or Hellwitch or Voivod that are along those lines but there are not very many. i can name weird death metal bands all day.

i do love thrash - Slayer's albums up to and including Seasons are my favorite metal ever. but i just believe the genre is more musically limited than death or black metal, or even grindcore.

you know its been a very long time since i have heard those albums, i just never liked that singer. maybe ill go back and give em another go.

Stick with what you like, I don't need to try and convert anyone. I just think the Thrash Hate is unwarranted.

BTW I'm friends with Marc Beiderman from Blind Illusion. They have a new young bassist Avery Thurman playing with them now and he's one of the best I've seen. Only 19, is like a cross between Less Claypool and Cliff Burton.

This was an awesome show last year:

Exodus have been so solid for a long time. Sad I never got to see them with Souza, he's my favorite of their singers, but the guy they brought back is awesome, too.

For real lol. Same with Immolation, when I first started going to shows as a kid in 2000, I swear every other tour coming through had Immolation as the opener.

I grew up in NY and basically it's an unspoken requirement that you see Immolation, Suffocation and/or Malignancy live in the process of growing up. I can't count how many times I've seen each of those bands.
Immolation are road warriors; they tour with damn near anyone

Yeah I saw Exodus with Zetro and Exodus with Dukes in the same venue a few months apart after they fired him and definitely prefer Zetro over Dukes.

He's doing shows with his own band and covering Legacy (Testament) and Exodus songs right now. They sound killer. I would had went to this one if it wasn't on a damn Monday...

I forced myself to listen to the new Megadeth album the whole way through lol...

So here's my review.

The vocals and the production really hold this album back alot.

We all know Dave decided to remaster the old records and he made them all sound horrible. So I blame him for tthe way this shit sounds. He probably WANTED it to sound like this.

It sounds weak, lifeless, and what's worse, his vocals are really bad, he's old, and nothing was done to try and make that sound better in the studio, it's just dry and without FX most of the time. He's not able to sing in the upper register at all anymore, so he's confined to the gruff growly old man vocals he does on here. It could have been helped somewhat by mixing it right, but very much like Chris Barnes in SFU, these guys' massive egos seem to think this is good enough, and little to no vocal production is attempted.

There are things, on the Metallica original covered, that Hetfield does that Mustaine either cant or refuses to do, and it's just so dissapointing. There's parts that any vocalist knows might need to add an extra note to a drawn out word and Dave can't or wont do it. I am pretty sure he could, and just doesnt.

The lyrics are very very bad here, so bad they actually, in tandem with the vocals, really bring the album down, because the production can't save it. Because it's so crystal clear and you can understand them, and it makes it worse hahahahaha

Woke up on the floor again
No idea just where I've been
My phone is dead, and the rent is due
I lost my job, and I lost a tooth

It's just another bad day, another bad day
Another bad day, it's just another bad day

I tried so hard to keep things straight
But every move just tempts my fate
"You" moved on, and "I" stayed behind
Trapped in a life I can't rewind

It's just another bad day, another bad day
Another bad day, it's just another bad day

My life's a mess, but I call it mine
Dusted dreams in a cluttered mind
Every scar is a line I drew
Of everything that you put me through

It's just another bad day, another bad day
Another bad day, it's just another bad day

It's just another bad day, another bad day
Another bad day, it's just another bad day

I suppose that even though a 15 yr old could write this, at least if he could perform it with conviction and vigor...
but thats all gone now.

The drums also sound like shit, They might as well got a drum machine to do them, for how lifeless they sound.

The guitars... production aside, there are some good catchy riffs and GREAT SOLOS here. Mustaine can still do solos all day. There is some weird 90's grunge sounding stuff to break up the generic thrash and I aint mad at it, but I think it's just one song that has that.

Other than that Mustaine sounds tired, and yea, he is tired, he's 64. But maybe they didnt need to make this. It's not really going out with a bang, more like a old man groan when you blow your back out or something.

4/10

just found this band recently. if anyone here are fans of stuff like Fallen Christ, Necrovore or Prosanctus Inferi, this should scratch a lot of that same frantic itch. also reminds me of stuff like Blasphemy, Conqueror, Truppensturm, etc.

I love Blasphemy (even did get to see them several times live ! ) as well as Archgoat etc

but I cant just listen to every WM band that wants to copy them.

That being said, this kills, the vocals are fuckin MENTAL hahaha

This song reminds me of old school hard rock from the 70's. A huge Black Sabbath vibe and great lyrics :

You won't find many harsher critics of "war metal" than me. The 3 bands I mentioned are pretty much the only ones I like. Archgoat I like the demos and first album but I wouldn't call them war metal. The style is so limited and all those bands like Blasphemophagasatanicaldirgevomit are just basically yes-men, just playing that style with no other elements in there. Very safe sounding. I don't know how you can manage to make war boring, but they do that.

That being said I like Omegavortex cause they bring in something different. I don't find too many bands who sound like early Prosanctus Inferi or Fallen Christ. The riffing is way more Voivod and Morbid Angel influenced too.

Yea the Omegavortex is very unhinged.

Some bands influenced by Blasphemy/beherit/archgoat etc really took it to a totally different direction like Pseudogod, Teitanblood etc. Very cool !

Anybody here into the Icelandic Black Metal scene?

Svartidaudi, Misthyrming, Etc?

Def heavily influenced by Deathspell Omega and that dissonant kind of BM, but some of these bands like Misthyrming did branch into a different original direction after.
