99 ways, like Ashes in your mouth, seemed to be kind of "in between" the Rust in Peace (GOAT) era and the Countdown to Extinction style that would mark a clear shift to a more commerical sound, to try and beat The Black Album at its own game.

I wouldn't say it overall sounds like Metallica, either, but the opening of the song has similarities, imo. Definitely Dave's style, more like Metallica held onto things they likely initially received from Dave. I'm probably out of pocket, I've never been very deep into either band (especially Metallica, not my thing), just specific songs from specific eras. Once I found Slayer I didn't really feel the need to listen to other thrash bands. I like old school Bathory, if people still consider that thrash

Again the dude did some goofy stuff, all their fuckin covers are fuckin terrible, to cover, and to listen to

Rust In Peace IS awesome the whole way though and can rival any metallica album though. But thats as close as they ever got.

He's a better songwriter than anyone in Metallica after Cliff died but... both of them by the mid 90s got really soft anyway

Thrash is very much a wide term.

It used to be Speed Metal, which is what Slayer's first two albums are, and Metallica's Kill them all.

Just imagine Iron Maiden or Judas Priest playing fast and you have Speed Metal

but then those kind of bands started to evolve the riffing to fit the speed, and you get stuff like Slayer's Reign in Blood, just evil riffs for the whole album

Bathory def has some thrash in it. Clearly that guy was influenced by alot of different kind of stuff going on at the time.

It just seems like Thrash is like a gateway style. So many bands who start out as thrash wind up moving on to a different style. For a while at least.

Slayer wound up sounding like slipknot after the 90s was over.

I know Holy Wars and Hanger 18 the rest not so much but I am halfway through and these songs are really good so far really liked Five Magics. Just great lead work all around is it Marty Freidman on this one?

also do NOT listen to ANY of the Megadeth remasters. They are SO bad. Listen to the originals
 
Great time to drop by as Rust in peace is discussed, BTW. I do enjoy Megadeth - I saw them in Paris this last spring and they put on a solid show - but they’re arguably my least favorite band from the big 4 of thrash. That being said I have no issue with people calling Rust in peace the greatest LP from these bands. Awesome album from A to Z.

True. I find the evolution of metal and other extreme subgenres and bands very interesting. I wouldn't even know a band who is thoroughly considered thrash in this day and age, but I would wager that the bands who consider themselves thrash don't really sound like the Big 4 in their "primes," necessarily. Similar to Venom, being "the first black metal band" and having a huge influence on a shitload of bands in that scene, who sound nothing like Venom, who was kinda Motorhead on meth. Always seems like the 2nd waves of any subgenre are really where they begin. Then those influential bands that are cited as the originators move on to sound nothing like the subgenres they influenced. Discharge is a good example of that, although they eventually found their way back to themselves (thank God). How they'd release one of the most legendary and influential albums of all time, only to follow it up with some Quiet Riot sounding shit, idk.

I'ma stop, I'm high.

Well I certainly like MD more than Anthrax. I do enjoy the older MD albums before RIP, especially the unique jazz playing by Chris Poland and Gar Samuelsson


But RIP is the only one I couldnt live without. The stuff later is catchy but soft. Some of that stuff is alright, but again. I could live without.

Slayer on the other hand I still would want to listen to all their stuff up to and including Seasons in the Abyss. Divine intervention is cool...but i can do with out it.

Metallica's first four albums are mandatory for constant listening and RTL is the greatest album ever made lol

Or at least my favorite.

I retract this statement Rust in Peace is solid front to back and I know the debut album is too! edit: it is So Far so good so what that I know is solid. Got that one on now..

You could say bands like Exodus, Testament, Overkill are still thrash bands.

Destruction, Sodom, Kreator...but they went through changes too.

The younger bands trying to emulate the bay area sound..etc...but really...with the exception of Overkill, i just dont find the bands playing "straight" thrash today relevant or interesting.

Still love the older records though.
 
For thrash to be interesting to me now, it's GOTTA be mixed w something else.
 
Bands like Nifelheim, Destroyer 666, Desaster, (old) Ketzer, and Cruel Force, mix the thrash with the more extreme black and death metals and it injects new life into it.
