The Medieval thread

They turned into brothels. That's why they went.
You don't think you would want to wash off after plowing a field all day. People bathed often in most of those eras and soap was common. However, when the plague and illness spread, it was then common to not bathe because it was thought that the water would open your pores and you would then get the illness.

IDK man I was just fucking around. Didn't know there was so many medieval hygiene experts around here...

I hate how the movies portrays battle scenes so wrong. Knights slicing through mail armor instantly killing the guy bugs me.

I think it would take a bit more than that to kill someone. Those battles must have been so brutal with so much protection. As bad as this may sound I would really like to the see the battles just to know exactly how these people killed each other up close and personal with those weapons and armor.
Not to mention they usually lost when the were routed. Some battles the losing side only lost a few hundred men out of a few thousand. Ex. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Barnet and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Wakefield
Then some battles were absolute brutal to the last man type. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Towton
This is all just from the War of the Roses. But the last portion of a battle would typically look closer to the Battle of the Bastards on GOT when Jon and his men were trampling each other and getting killed trying to retreat.

But yeah, movies like to make it look like the losing side gets annihilated with only a handful of prisoners taken.

Also, they never ran full bore into each other Braveheart style. (at least not to my knowledge) They would walk and try to stay in formation. They of course would scatter as the battle went on. Shield walls were common in the early ages, later calvary (armored knights and men-at-arms) and longbowmen did the brunt of the offense, pike formations were common in the late ages and primary in the Renaissance (because the Swiss and Landskechts were mangling the opposing infantry and cavalries, so this caused a change).

I couldn't live back then.

Some douche could accuse me of worshipping Satan and next thing you know I'm being tortured to death. All because I stole his girlfriend.

And the worst part would be that I didn't even bang her, because when I took off her clothes and saw all that body hair, and smelled that B.O., my boner would lock itself in a chastity belt.

No thanks.

Napoleon would write his fine piece of ass, and tell her to not wash for weeks because he loved the smell of her dirty Pussy.

Something to think about...

Think you could hack it in medieval times? Kind of hard to believe just how long it was, modern times has only been less than 200 years while medieval times was over 1000. Wouldn't mind being a peasant in a safe area away from raiding foreign armies, plague centers, civil wars etc. running around in an enchanting forest.

Not sure if I would like castle life too much even though it wasn't as bad or as dark as some of us might have believed. I think I would be a good "lord" to my servants and private army.

Time stamped:

This guy's youtube is great and very informative. His crimes against medieval realism videos are awesome.

Feel free to talk about or post anything medieval related.

Sick pix, mayne. But I see "medieval" and I click to see dating advice. But this op has none.

Is this a trolljob?

I'm guessing the main attraction relative to the longbow at the time was you didn't need to be as well trained to use it.
Late middle ages. the idea of a peasant killing a fully armed mounted knight with a cheap arrow was astonishing. The equivalent of a modern beta with a gun..

Yes, noone was slicing through plate and mail like in gay fantasy movies. Stabbing or breaking it with armor-breaching weaponry is completely another thing.

We may somewhat judge from historic finds. For example, not that long ago the body of king Richard III of England was found, who is known to have died in battle. He was wearing a full plate armor during the battle. Scientists found 13 bruises on his head, 2 of them lethal, and some other wounds on his body. A couple of them seemed to be mocking or desecrating in nature so most likely were inflicted after the king was struck down. seems that during the battle king Richard lost his helmet and only then his enemies managed to kill him.
His arms and legs though, protected by armor, were unharmed.

Reviewing that we may judge that medieval armor contemporary to Richard III offered outstanding protection to its wearer and it was hard to kill a skilled fighter in good armor.

Yup. Less training needed, less strain on the body.

agreed. also go cut lumber for 5 minutes. It's pretty tiring. Now imagine stress and death all around you. I think we have zero idea what battle actually looked like. Probably pretty pathetic TBH. That or FAR more organized than we are led to believe these days.

In addition to cutting a wood for 5 minutes with an axe, put on a heavy weight vest to simulate wearing armor.

Anyone that's swung an axe, maul, sledge hammer, etc. for an extended time knows people weren't swinging full force fighting like they portray in the movies. I don't care if you're on steroids + epo, you're going to be huffing and puffing in no time swinging something with some heft to it. That's obvious even from watching ufc fights where guys go hard for a few minutes and end up not being able to do shit after that.
