They didn't just decide not to use the EU for the new movies. They de-canonized it from all of Star Wars media.
They supposedly got rid of the EU for the purpose of "creative freedom," so there shouldn't be any complaining about writers' block on their part. This is what they wanted.

Also, they don't have any problem cherrypicking from the EU when it suits them (i.e. including Thrawn in Rebels).

The issue is that Kennedy and the people that she brought into Lucasflim aren't real Star Wars fans, and they don't know what the fuck they're doing.

I & many others feel they're doing a fantastic job.

KK was not complaining & didn't indicate anything about writers block. She simply pointed out the obvious extra challenges of presenting a new story in movie form before it had been presented to the world first as a book or comic. Movies made off of previously proven stories have the advantage of the public giving their approval or not prior to the movie. They can pick it apart & so the movie maker has the advantage of all that feedback before hand. That's all her simple statement meant... & then the trolls twisted it & blew it up incredibly out of proportion to mean things that were not said.

I understand the sour attitude regarding the great EU purge of 2012... but the EU was all over the place & the stories didn't all fit together. They had like 5 levels of Canon, but Lucas always reserved teh right to overwrite anything other than what he made in the movies. iow... the EU never came with a promise. In order for a promise to be made across all media... the purge was necessary. Even the biggest EU supporter recognizes that all the stories aren't cohesive... & so they have to understand the purge on some level.

The new Canon universe is 100% guaranteed to not overwrite any story lines or characters & that is a wonderful thing. Nothing like this has ever been done on this level & its absolutely fantastic. When you ease up on resisting it... you can see how wonderful it is to read a comic for example... & know that story is guaranteed to exist in the same world as all other Canon media... & so you can apply & compare its logic & story across the main movie releases, tv series, novels, & any other canon material. It really is fantastic... & there's no way they could've brought the entire EU along for the ride.

Random couple on internet talking about Mandalorian - not worth watching but it brings up an interesting point. People care about Mandalorian and don't care about TROS. If people are spending any money they'll stay home with Disnee plus where it's warm than venture out to see a sequel to a disappointing movie. You want that avatar yet @One MMA Fan ?

All this show did was take more viewers eyes away from the movie. I don't hear nothing about this movie but the buzz is on for Mando. Even on sherdog the TROS thread has died.

That's the point. There was ZERO reason other than greed to not use EU material. They had the perfect Skywalker/Solo kids stories to tell, but they decided to take a giant shit on fans just so they could make the property in their own image.

Zero reason you say, but if they used a story from the EU for the new trilogy, then everyone would know how it ended. Right now we have this grand finale that's going to tie in everything & nobody knows what's going to happen. It's wonderful.

I never understood this beef against creating a new story. The EU is still there & those stories are still there to be enjoyed. Now we're getting a new story. They are borrowing from the EU here & there, but that's the way it's always been. Lucas always & brutally used the right to use, reference or overwrite anything in the EU & so it never came with a promise like today's Canon does. In that regard, nothing has changed with EU material & you know the EU was all over the place & so they couldn't bring the EU that contradicted itself in all those ways into a cohesive Canon universe. There's no beef with a new story period.
Is just that a lot of people think the new story is a bad story, and at that point it becomes easy to point out that the EU had a good story that could have been adapted.

How does marvel comics make movies that all follow the comics yet change things just enough and in compelling ways to keep things interesting?

Infinity Wars was their best movie and was straight out of the comics, but restructured to fit the movies - they used the same basic story and changed things enough while still paying tribute to the fans and keeping things interesting
