Locked THE MANDALORIAN Season 1

Status
Not open for further replies.
To be fair. There is nothing in canon that says he has to wear it at all times. Clone Wars and Rebels showed Mando’s without their helmets all the time.
Yeah but they're not the main characters. They could do fun switcheroo episodes since no one really knows what he looks like. Unless they go daytime soap where Mando has a twin brother who recovered from amnesia.

Clippy's Review of Chapter 2 (SPOILERS!!!)

Hey guys hey, I wasn't expecting this but last night I got to watch episode 2 - very short!

I hate to say this but I found this episode mediocre and a little concerning, but please allow me to explain.

I'm sorry friends, but this is what I thought of the ep which I found far less superior than the first ep. This episode never really took off for me (literally). Basically at the end of Chapter 1 the Mandalorian finishes is task and leaves. Well I thought he would have already left the planet but nope ... he's still here for a while and then he leaves. Nothing of significance happened in this episode at all so for me this was a filler ep which is easily skippable.

The only thing note-worthy here is Baby Yoda using the Force against a monster. How did you all feel with that scene? Besides being predictable I found it further damaging to Jedi lore. I'm convinced it's only in place so when people say "Why is Ray so good at using the Force with no training?" And then Disnee can go "but look, baby Yoda can do it too!!!".

<LikeReally5>

For real, in Empire when sage and wise old man Yoda lifted that X-Wing he was showing Luke - see? See what you can do with training if you keep with it? It felt like Yoda lifting that X-Wing was a demonstration of 900 years of training and knowledge, but nope - guess he could do it since he was a baby. Wow is that less inspiring. Why am I talking about Empire???? Well besides it being the best thing Star Wars ever put out, improper add-ons through the modern area keep tarnishing the mystery and appeal of it.

Apparently Disnee thinks you can just be a Jedi with no training and use the force with no training. And I don't want to hear about how Ray scurried around the desert so she's good with the force. She was never taught a lick about Jedi stuff or even really knew what the force was. This baby is even worse sacrilege. I was expecting the baby to maybe help a little but, but fuck sakes he is full on holding a monster suspended in mid air and the monster is struggling ... but micro Yoda ain't

Aw fuck it - back to the Mandalorian review

Nice things:

I have always had an affinity for Jawas. I thought all scenes with Jawas were great! Liked how these little fucks put up a decent fight against Mando - throwing shit at him - all the trap doors on the side - good stuff! The whole thing about wanting a fucking egg LOL. I mean I'm sure there is more eggs out there if Mando wanted more shit

More bad things:

Sorry guys I still have more to say. This whole episode was pointless again and the wipes were weird - was really hoping for something to move the story along but boy did it get hung up here.

I have spoken guy: I perked up when Mando asked him to join the crew. I actually thought this would be how the story unfolds - he gets more crew as the show goes on. Because Mando is not a developed character and needs more people to play off of, and Nick Nolty would have been perfect. I was excited for this potential

I have spoken Guy : Nah I'm staying here

:(

fuck sakes Disnee you threw the best character in the trash and left us with an undeveloped Mando and a baby

Where is Pedro Pascal's face???

Why is it when he has a rest with the baby and tries to fix his arm, he won't take his mask off. I really wanted him too LOL. Nobody was around. Please don't pull a Gwendoline christy guys

And finally I want to talk about the character of Mando for a bit, or lack there of. But more importantly how ineffective of a bounty hunter he is. We saw him struggle quite a bit in the last episode but boy oh boy was he useless in this one. I have spoken guy must be so let down to finally see a Mando who sucks this badly. In this episode he gets wrekt by Jawas and then saved by a baby.

Let's bring everything back to the OT and talk about Luke, a farmer who is learning to be a Jedi. Yes he struggled and overcame all struggles - but became the Wise Jedi Master at the end of ep 6 and no further events happened. But in this case it isn't a farmer trying to become something more. It's an established bounty hunter trying to just simply be what he already is, and fails spectacularly. Right now his bad ass card is having another piece cut off it in each scene. My goodness does he get his ass kicked LOL

See I thought baby Yoda might do something subtle like show a hint of the force to distract the beast - but no he full on lifts it up. This baby ... is making Mando look bad. See with most story tellings you give the audience a hint of things to come, I wish they were more subtle. They could have shown Baby Yoda's potential and expanded on it through later eps. But fuck no he's full on lifting a monster in chapter TWO. What happens next chapter? Does he throw Star Destroyers at other Star Destroyers!?!? As with most storys you have to constantly outdo yourself, they are setting the bar way too high early on. Getting too fantastical too fast could lead to a rapid burn out - make it more compelling, interesting and mysterious don't just throw all your chips on the table so soon!!

They toted this show as a Wild Western in space but I don't remember Clint Eastwood having no baby. You pair a badass with a baby and it will have no choice but to soften the edges of the badass bounty hunter. What an absolutely bizarre paring. Imagine Rambo with a baby the whole movie - and the baby kicks more ass than Rambo LMAO

One more thing, why didn't Mando leave the baby with I have Spoken Guy. What kind of asshole takes the baby with him to fight a monster. Oh yeah the plot needed the baby close so he could do the force thing and make rey look better by proxy

---- the future

What next? Well I was hoping by now we would find out what Mando does with baby but the whole episode spun it's wheels and we have to wait to the next episode ... maybe. Unless he gets stuck in space or further stalls, and I will come in super hot if they pause the plot again.

But the story potentials are there. Maybe Mando gives up the baby and finds out what their intentions are, to torture and extract midichlorians from it or something. Then Mando has to storm the gates of the post empire thing and get baby back. A one man wrecking crew. That would be fuckin awesome right?

I'm still hopeful for the future but man did this episode feel like a side story within a side story

Sorry friends I calls em like I sees em - maybe the next episode will do better :)

Hey there Clippy I'll post some answers or better said make a post from my own perspective while referencing and answering some of things from your top quoted post here:

Yes the episodes are short first 35 minutes and this one 30.. I was expecting something along the lines of 55-45 minutes at least and I don't agree with any "creative" choices that this is what the need of the episode really was no find a way you are creative people you have all the money in the world give me 1 hour episodes, I would have preferred the first episode was both of them united.
Then again from their perspective they had such a sweet ending with the first episode that it kinda seemed like the obvious end moment for maximum hype. Yet this all half an hour episodes will seriously put a hurt on the season length and sets precedents for future shows.

No I do not believe episode 2 was filler and skippable at all.
We had a major reveal in why the baby is important and why people are after it to either kill it or posses it and even... *I will shut up here this is deep SW nerd stuff with a heavy touch of spoilers*
Plus we where showed that our protagonist isn't superman he has limitations, even if he is a total badass he has his own ups and downs.
Last it was fun, like seriously chasing Jawas around was great I was smiling like a kid, it was great. Overall not a bad package for half an hour.

I had no problem with the Yoda baby using the force and no it doesn't damage the Jedi lore.. like what and why ? and then you went on your Rey tangent and Disney and whatnot ish I think that's a bit much and I might just start thinking Daisy or better yet Brie Larson hehe stole your lunch money or something :p I'm kidding I'm kidding your a sherdoger you are the one that knocks takes their lunch money.

Back to serious, I feel the Empire scene wasn't about the fact Yoda had 900 years of training / experience it was to show him (Luke) he can do it too if he goes for it and believes in himself and listens to the force and just uses it with no more self doubt. The Force doesn't care about your age, about your size, your physicality, even your 'training' if you will if you tap into it and are in tune with it then you will use it. Now of course experience and practice and latent potential etc play a factor but that wasn't the main point here.. baby Yoda is force sensitive, strong in the force and he wanted to save Mando and gave it his all to help him out.. resulted in him passing out cause he is a toddler after all.
The force doesn't just belong to the Jedi, TLJ taught us that.. it's not just all about Jedi and training, there are others out there who can use the force and even connect to it in this primal form almost like on a subconscious level. Baby Yoda, broom boy, Maz Kanata (well deleted scene), Rey 'awakening' in TFA.. see it's not exclusive to just trained Jedi.
In another aspect you need to realize the context we are in right now this is an old franchise over 40 years, we had plenty of material, plenty of movies, plenty of games, plenty of books, plenty of animated series, comics and just now live action TV series you aren't dealing with the late 70's and early 80's crowds here either no no with just 1-2 movies out no no you are dealing with decades spent in this franchise of course you will have repeating themes, upscaling events and situations and a lot of familiar frankly it goes with the territory and I'm often amazed that people don't look at it with a bit of context wait your telling me say the 11th movie in a franchise or now a TV series in this franchise that is been out for going on five decades with plenty of material will have similar themes, beats and be nostalgic.. mind blown.

Last try to impress a modern kid with your idea of a 'subtle force use' I dare you, just different times and you got to evolve with it and be hip and flashy and whatnot so for me seeing the space rhino float around by use of the force via baby Yoda isn't a deal breaker. This show isn't meant to be R rated to be 'the next Game of Thrones' nope not at a PG13 rating with 35 minutes episodes.. this is aimed at a different general audience there is no boobs, no blood, no other strictly mature content this also includes the younger audience so try to look at it from that perspective and don't expect it to be Star Wars after-hours cause it's not even if you see it a tad darker and edgier they are pushing their boundaries indeed as much as they can but at the heart of it you can sit down and watch this show with your 12 year old boy or say your 12 year old daughter (thanks Rey :p).. so have some context is all I'm saying.

Yep loved all the Jawa stuff even the egg part freaking Jawas always wanted to see them kicked around (sorry Arq) just brings me back to the days I saw the OT as a kid, how can you not love seeing this type of stuff when I saw that sandcrawler fortress I was a happy camper.

Nick Nolte's character is indeed a hit and his line is becoming a popular culture catchphrase and of course I love him. I was so so on him refusing to join the bounty hunter profession lol maybe that would been to much for the old little alien who knows but for first let's see if he appears in future episode because of the success he has has so far I'm sure some appearances are going to be written in for him in season 2.

Pedro Pascal's face.. I don't know why you are so adamant about his face hiding ways so far in the show, I don't know are you his agent or whats up ha ha. I'm sure it will be a big moment reveal or maybe a tender moment with someone who he has feelings for. For me I'm not that bothered by it, I get his all mysterious angle here I'm happy with the current situation so far.

Lack of character for Mando wow whats up with this full frontal attack on him hidden in the middle of the post, c'mon now we had 2 half an hours episodes and you are complaining about what exactly ? He is the strong silent type, a cool and top bounty hunter, badass, hints of a moral compass, has a code, seems fair, grew up an orphan, loyal/cares for just more then himself (giving money to the orphans), he was prepared to die in his last stand vs the monster, isn't superhuman he has defeats etc.
Ineffective bounty hunter you say (hello collection of frozen bounties), bad why cause he charged a moving fortress and didn't manage to win or kill the monster with no help.. man if Mando is bad as his job then imagine someone who is good at it then accordingly to your very high standards that is.

Having his badass card removed ? what.. no sir... and getting his ass kicked a lot huh you totally forgot episode 1 or what is happening he killed a bunch of guys.. then episode 2 got jumped in the start and smoked them and a few jawas for good measure :D I think he has 50 kills so far in 2 episodes.

Actually the paring of a badass with a baby is an interesting dynamic and by no means something new or never seen before.. yes it works and it works well in fact.

Look up Japanese cinematography and manga from what I remember something like early 70's.. aka the famous: "Lone Wolf and Cub" story and our Mando seriously took inspiration from that classic franchise for this episode.

lonewolf.jpg

Even Guy Ritchie took inspiration from that for his big Hollywood movie with Big Chris and Little Chris in: "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"

51yBhwk6yaL.jpg

So yea I disagree on your views of the parring and dynamic being lackluster and uninspiring in fact quite the opposite I found it interesting and not done that often either.

Okay moving on.. well not that much moving cause again you made it about Rey and all this giant Disney conspiracy everything designed to make Rey look better huh I don't even know how to answer this, seems more like something you got strong feelings about and kinda personal so not sure it's even worth opening this can of worms.. no offense.

What's next, well this isn't exactly that hard to predict for the next episode I could probably give an interpretation and be pretty close to the mark but I prefer to leave it open and not think to much on it just let it play out you know and just enjoy the ride I'm not looking for Oscar quality writing here.. this is Star Wars this is fun and campy at times and it's made to be enjoyed like that, not necessary over think it.

I enjoyed the episode a lot and kinda bummed you didn't but what can you do this stuff doesn't land the same for everyone but I do hope you try a different perspective of looking at things find that inner Clippy kid and enjoy the ride, hopefully the next episode will bring you more enjoyment.

Take care "The Clipperino" aka "Clippy-11" the sherdog protocol and post & like droid... no need to initiate self-destruct just yet.

Terrific post my friend

I probably underplayed how much I enjoyed this epsiode to get my thoughts out there before I forgot them all ,but yes this was a fun episode and entertaining. Just felt the need to delve deep into it cause I wanted to lay my thoughts out there

But you have to admit this was a wheels spinning episode that stalled the plot. Yes we got the Yoda reveal but that could have been done another way or time. This Jawa thing was great but it could have been part of a larger episode. This almost feels like bonus / deleted scenes. Not sure how to explain it. It was good tho, don't get me wrong - I just wanted to see the story progress more.

And yah I'm a big fan of Pedro Pascal so I want to see his face at least once, seems weird to have a high profile acter and never see him

As for Yoda, like I said, a subtle using the force to distract thing would have been more effective and interesting - I thought what happened was over the top

Jawas and the attempt to attack that moving super vehicle and all that were top notch tho and my favourite stuff from this show so far

But I still wish "I have spoken" guy and bounty bot stayed in the picture, I find these background/side characters far more interesting than the main characters at this time. hope the show still finds a way to keep them in

And yes the future of this show could be epic - just stop spinning your wheels show

<LikeReally5>
Baby Yoda is older than Luke was when he became a Jedi. He's older than the ages of Rey and Kylo put together.

Why wouldn't he be adept in the Force already? You don't know what he's been doing all this time.

Let's bring everything back to the OT and talk about Luke, a farmer who is learning to be a Jedi. Yes he struggled and overcame all struggles - but became the Wise Jedi Master at the end of ep 6 and no further events happened.

{<redford}

Well all caught up, not much I can say that hasn't already been said. Not crazy about characters using force without training but whatever, they pissed on continuity more times than the GoT writers so I just ignore stuff like that

I will say Mando is def the most relatable character in Star Wars- he's just trying to get by, drives a crap car, under paid, gets robbed, and now did the equivalent of adopting a puppy he found. I just want him to give us the ol Danny Glover "I'm too old for this sh*t"

Lol you guys are way too critical. This show is great so far. Disney ruined the franchise with the last 2 bombs (I refuse to watch the most recent one and I won't watch the final stinker) but this show has potential.

Obviously Lone wolf and cub is the main inspiration but also reminded me of this.

There's a story line in which Frank Castle becomes the new Ghost Rider and travels back in time to kill Thanos as a baby. Of course, Frank can't pull the trigger on a baby, even knowing what he'll grow into, and decides to adopt him instead and train him to be the new Punisher. This goes about as well as you might expect.

Baby Thanos can speak and walk from birth, and the story contains the single greatest line the Mad Titan has ever spoken, in a comic or onscreen,

"Thanos has soiled himself..."
