Law The insidious creep of online sports gambling

Walked in here expecting a discussion about some degenerate gambler.

Why should we let those who can’t control themselves ruin it for those who can?

Might as well ban junk food, booze, and fast cars while we’re at it.

How is John force doing? They said he had some brain damage, but I never heard how bad and haven’t kept up.

Sorry, i didn't notice your post before, but he's doing better, though still not driving. Jack Beckman will be driving his car for the 2025 season. I wouldn't be surprised if John officially retires soon.

Day trading is no different.

Too many lives and families destroyed from gambling, should be treated like cigarettes by the govt.
Im surprised their advertising hasnt been restricted like alcohol and tobacco.

Personally im fine with people gambling on the outcome of games. Certain betting actions of these bookies are quite egregious/predatory; like parlays. Rise in payday loan advertisers is also troubling.
alcohol doesn’t seem to have much restriction. Ads galore with the NFL today.

It's silly but not much sympathy for the idiots that gamble everything on sports. Have some common sense and self-restraint. What's next on the list of banned advertising? Anything addictive?

As a resident of Australia (biggest gamblers losers in the world) i suggest you clamp down on this shit sooner rather than later.

It's fucking crazy how any live sport has turned into a show about gambling.

The whole industry survives on money laundering and problem gamblers.

Sports betting is no different than playing the stock market.

Its lotteries that need to go. Pure scams, rigged from the start 100% of the time

Very different.

Gambling over long run = statistically you lose.

Investing in the stock market = statistically you win.

High frequency trading in the stock market = statistically you lose.

Cigarettes? And add on to that the fentanyl crisis.

The banning of smoking advertisements on society has very obviously been a net positive on society. So why not expand that to other vices? No one is preventing you from doing them if you insist.

Not only should we ban advertising of it, we should ban it outright. Gambling shouldn't be legal.

Ban Native American casinos, too. Ban Las Vegas. Nationalize them. They should be seized and become the property of the federal government. Use the funds they generate to offset the requirement for taxes by furnishing our federal spending programs (by that, I mean whatever revenues are counted should be added explicitly to federal sheets citing the collection of tax revenues from the public, and the % of GDP). Because while this is as anti-Libertarian as I am about anything, otherwise Democrats would fuck even this up and not use the money to relieve the taxpayer. They'd just tax everyone the same despite the new hordes of cash coming in.

I'm being earnest, btw, not sarcastic. Gambling is a scourge. It should be banned everywhere. The only allowances of it should be either totally or semi-governmental so that the majority of proceeds go to funding government services like the lottery. If the private outfit can't stay solvent while sending the majority of the proceeds to the government, then it doesn't need to exist, and licenses there should be reserved for outfits that are entirely state-run.

This is how you turn a vice into a positive.

What about sex and drugs? Can I get government funded coke and hookers???
