‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ Tito Ortiz was one of the pioneers of promoting fights in MMA, with his brash personality, his fued with the Lion’s Den, and his notorious t-shirts, combined with his dominant top control and ground and pound style, Tito quickly rose to become the UFC’s first real star.
Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock at UFC 40, essentially saved the UFC from going bankrupt, the event did 150,000 buys (three times the average of their usual numbers).
The fight was highly anticipated as the animosity between Ortiz and Shamrock had been brewing for years. Ortiz defeated Lion’s Den fighters Guy Mezger and Jerry Bohlander. After avenging his first defeat to Mezger, Tito Ortiz would proceed to taunt the Lion’s Den.
With the real bad blood between Ortiz and Shamrock between their contrasting personalities and everything that transpired between the two of them this was the UFC’s biggest grudge match at the time.
Tito’s top control and ground and pound proved to be too much for seasoned Ken Shamrock as he secured a 3rd round finish to defend his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
Tito Ortiz at one point held the record for most UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title defenses at 5. He has 6 UFC championship wins under his belt.
Tito saw a decline when he had to have back surgery and would suffer a losing streak, in 2011 after haven gone nearly 5 years without a victory, Tito’s back was against the wall as he faced a young Ryan Bader. Tito Ortiz knocked Bader down and finished him with a guillotine choke in an impressive first round stoppage victory and showed that he was not finished yet.
Tito has fought some of the toughest fighters of all time
- Chuck Liddell
- Wanderlei Silva
- Randy Couture
- Vitor Belfort
- Lyoto Machida
- Rashad Evans
- Frank Shamrock
- Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
- Chael Sonnen
- Forrest Griffin
- Evan Tanner
And single handidly beat Lion’s Den into an Actual Living Dieded
His rivalries with Chuck Liddell, Ken Shamrock and the Lion’s Den, and even Dana White are some of the greatest of all time in MMA.

Tito may not be the greatest of all time but he was one of the pioneers of MMA and paved the way for future stars of the sport.
Before Conor McGregor, before Chael Sonnen, before Brock Lesnar, before Ronda Rousey, there was ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ Tito Ortiz.
