Movies The Godfather vs Goodfellas

I'd give both of these classic films 10/10. Personally I prefer Goodfellas, as it kept me entertained from start to finish.

I know people will say that the Godfather is the better film due to the academy awards that it received, but the academy has overlooked many great films. Joe Pesci did win best supporting actor, but he was one of many great performances in this film.

Goodfellas is one of my favourites, but id still rank Godfather over it. Its just perfect in every way. Part 1 & 2.

Like others have said, re-watching godfather is a bore. Almost impossible to make it through that ultra long opening celebration scene. Goodfellas has it beat for enjoyment. As far as ranking goes, I find them both overrated, but godfathers better.

Goodfellas for me, it's a bit more realistic portrayal of mob life.

Both movies are THE GOAT

but Goodfellas is probably a more realistic potrayal, and the ending,a man with no more soul left to sell,is more profound.

Goodfellas by far for me. A lot of that comes from (as mentioned) rewatchability. I enjoyed GF but I'm immersed in Goodfellas. To me that's the deciding factor.

Godfather but Goodfellas is better for casual viewing. Goodfellas is fun but it seems like Scorcese is a little formulitic with what we know he made later but isn't fair to Goodfellas itself. It is splitting hears some but Scorsese got stuck in a rut. His new movie Flowers under the Killing Moon is supposed to be anazing.

Back when I was 20, I would've said Goodfellas, now that I'm in my mid 30's, its Godfather and its not even close. Both movies are fantastic.

Also one more thing: I dont care what anyone says, Al Pacino in Godfather 1 and 2 was acting at its absolute peak, outshining even the amazing acting by all of the other giants in those movies.

Godfather easily. Didn't really care for Goodfellas to be honest. It's a top 50 movie for me but nowhere near my top 25.

Goodfellas for me.

I did enjoy Godfather but I must say I found it a bit self-indulgent and long-winded.

Still a great film but for me Goodfellas > Casino > Godfather

I do think Goodfellas and Casino are a little formulaic compared to his earlier career but honestly I would have preferred he stuck to that formula rather than being pushed towards more conventional plots. Something like Gangs of Newyork I think would have been much better as a Goodfellas like crime drama rather than as a thriller with an obvious hero/villain.

I'm rewatching Godfather now after not seeing it in full in maybe 10+ years.

I recently read Mario Puzo based a lot of Vito's mannerisms from his mother. I could see it, CEO-types aren't dramatic or possessive on nicknames and gift-giving, I guess Italian moms are.

Both GOAT movies

I go with Goodfellas because its a more honest depiction and honest ending.

Lifts the curtain on the glamorization pretty quickly

The scheme with Luca Brasi in the beginning of the movie never made much sense. Why did Vito think that would work? Even under the best of scenarios Luca is portrayed in the film as pretty dumb, I never bought that he could have pulled that deception off.

Yeah..Michael Corleone is sort of driven to become what he tried to avoid. That's his character arc.

But Henry Hill was a piece of shit in the beggining of the movie, and thats what he is at the end. He had no regrets about it. If he could hed go back to being the same mob asshole and he always would want that. Him and his guys have no redeeming qualities. It almost is like a movie you wouldnt wanna watch if you describe it a certain way.

But thats alot more true to what this shit is like, these kinda people are like...and Scorcese makes it entertaining. Not at all an easy thing to do. Its a hell of a ride. The scene where he's strung out driving around...that shit is unbelivable hahaha.
