Crime The Gabby Petito case.

Funny how this fact offends people. Considering the title of the thread, your post was more than appropriate.
This is a huge problem with Native American women as well.
It's unbelievable how triggered they get. They're more offended by the mere observation of racial injustice than they are by the racial injustice itself. It's Orwellian.

that’s been the name of the phenomenon for decades. it was coined many years ago by actual sociologists. joy reid didn’t just invent it lmao
Uh... she never said she did... in fact she pointed that out in the article herself.

“The way this story captivated the nation,” Reid told her viewers, “has many wondering why not the same media attention when people of color go missing? Well, the answer actually has a name: Missing White Woman Syndrome, the term coined by the late and great Gwen Ifill to describe the media and public fascination with missing white women like Laci Peterson or Natalee Holloway while ignoring cases involving of people of color.”

Because they take it as some kind of personal attack if you bring up the words 'white', 'black', or 'race'.
As if they are personally being accused of something malicious. Or as if malicious intent is even needed to have a bias.

They think that acknowledging that a problem ALSO exists on this side, is some sort of deliberate attempt at downplaying this tragedy.
Same story, every time. Asking for equal treatment and consideration is seen as an attack, or some sort of bitterness.

<{vega}>

the dude said "they even have a term for it now" like it hasn't been a term for decades

Exactly. It's actually proof of a guilty mind. Deep down they know how fucked up and racist America has been historically, and they lash out because of two reasons:

1. acknowledging the truth implies that whatever status they have is due to ill gotten gains
2. it shatters the fairy tale notion they were brought up with that their ancestors were the good guys

It's not really accurate though. A lot of white women go missing without attention. Ugly white people don't make headlines either. I would say it is much more accurately described as "pretty and young missing white woman syndrome."

In fact they should re-name it to "Janice Syndrome" in honour of the late great Norm McDonald.

The point isn't that every single white girl that goes missing gets a search party. But if you're a white female, you have a higher chance of someone looking for you than if you are a minority.
Obviously, there's a few different categories that will make you more or less likely to get noticed.
But in comparison to minorities, you just don't see many stories getting wide coverage.

For instance.
There was an attractive black lady that got killed a week or 2 ago. She's an instagram "influencer" with like 2 million followers. She knows some celebrities in the hip hop world.
Some guy came to her place, strangled her, and then stabbed himself. Did you even hear about it?

If it didn't make the war room I didn't hear about it. Sherdog is my only source for news.

Sadly, I don't even think many of them do have a guilty mind. I think they just don't put much thought into it one way or the other.
IMO, most of these types of people have a pretty simple view of the world. "The world is hard, shit happens. White people suffer too. Get over it. Work harder."
I don't doubt that they really believe what they believe. They've never had to care or think about the experiences of other people.

True. But i detect a lot of defensiveness, the emotion they show has deeper roots than "just get over it". Like you said earlier they take it as a personal attack, and I think its because the implication of acknowledging the truth is that it would mean that they aren't naturally just better than black people (which is what many of them believe), the only difference is they just got all the advantages. This shatters their notion of who they are and where they stand in the pecking order. Thats why many of them are fans of Charles Murray and the Bell Curve. They think its objective proof that they're better than black people.

Wait, are you trying to suggest cops and LE handle cases differently for people of color missing? No way I believe that. Hell you can see clearly that cops fucked this one up big time, and they are under a fucking gigantic microscope.

Hmm, I hear you. While I'm sure that type of person may exist in a number of people, I wouldn't feel confident to say to what degree..

I think the feeling of a personal attack has more to do with a feeling of attacking their values and world view, not so much race. I think many people identify more with being a man, or being an American, or certain time periods where "things were good". I think that that guides them more than anything for the most part. White people don't typically have to think about their race as much in their daily life, so I think they may lack some empathy on understanding why minorities do.
I don't think most of them think they are inherently better, they just think that the only thing holding people back is themselves, and that race has nothing to do with it. Going against that narrative can diminish their own work/accomplishments.

Did you hear about the story that I linked?
It happened this month as well. And she is an influencer with 2.5 million followers on Instagram.
A stalker found her, wrote crazy notes of love and confession all over her place in lipstick. He strangled her and then stabbed himself in the neck. So this isn't like some random black girl died somewhere.
How much coverage did it get?

This isnt saying that the cops or media intentionally handle POC cases differently. But there is definitely an undeniable bias when it comes to looking at POC as victims/people that need help. They don't get the same amount of attention.

police absolutely handle the disappearances of POC differently. when Srikanth Rayadurgam went missing in new zealand, they literally redirected a search team en route to look for him to go search for a missing little white girl instead.

Whats the story there? This started as one person missing, and ended up into a murder with another person missing. Remember when Walt Harris's daughter was missing? It was all over the news and facebook, because it was a MISSING persons case. Walt Harris isn't even close to being a big celebrity, but it was a story the media could run with.

I think your link was wrong. Do you mind linking to the story? The other link was some old white lady who got killed by her husband.
