The end of WBW?

Division already rolled without Nunes...its not going away.

Psh we used to use Sopcast and listen to radio of Pride events live at like 6am.

I still remember hearing that Mark Kerr in his return got a double leg and then promptly was KOed. Still stings a little.

The problem is WMMA is the UFC is shit at really scouting and creating strong divisions.

Outside of title fights They treat WMMA as filler with 50/50 record fighters to fill up cards for time.
Maybe if they actually scouted for multiple Olympic level competitors and boxers... it'd be a different story. For 135+ They finally are doing things better with Harrison.

It's the same shit with the men's division.

I guess to put it succinctly.
The UFC is no longer the cream of the crop.

It's that with a majority of being it's own feeder league.

If Nunes obliterates Kayla and promptly retires again, how plausible is it that WBW gets disbanded?

WBW (and WMMA in general) has been floundering since Nunes retired. Now that the mockery of Pennington and Pena as "champions" has been decisively laid to rest, the division's hopes rest almost entirely on Kayla's broad shoulders. If Nunes wipes Kayla out and retires again, that would be the death knell for the division. And the UFC would be out of gimmicks to revive it. That would be the perfect opportunity for WBW to take its rightful place alongside WFW in the mma trash bin.

Question: why do you think it would be the death of the division? You don’t think that someone knew would come and become champion??

WBW isn’t like women’s featherweight. Women’s featherweight had nobody who was in the division like they had no people who fought at that weight class. Like literally if you check tap for like the best 145 women in the world there wasn’t anybody. All those featherweights could make 135. Even Kayla could make 135. They’re like 30 to 40 chicks that fight at 135 and they are always signing new ones.

IMO they should close WMMA 135 and open WMMA 145. There are probably more than a few female MMA fighters that would rather fight at 145 than 135, but the 145 division itself is too weak to exist alongside 135.

I think 145 would be stronger than 135 if they closed the Women's Bantamweight division.

Is Kayla even a draw? Nothing really changes for WMMA
If she keeps winning and keeps dominating opponents, then yes she will be a draw. People like watching dominant wrecking machines, like when Honda had her run.

Just make it 140 and make that women's HW imo. All the girls who struggle to make 135 like Kayla, Dumont, Ketlen and Chiasson can make 140.

Yea that'd work too. But the UFC have been hesitant to change weight classes like that.

I'd prefer your solution, but I don't they do it. And in that case I'd rather open [WMMA] 145 and close 135.

I agree with OP
Nunes and Harrison are both one foot out
No one cares about Pena, Pennington, MBS, even within hardcores. Aldana is 37, Dumont is 34, Vieira 33
Perez, who is 30, and Cavalcanti, 27, are the youngest-ranked fighters, and the UFC is not really building them by making them fight some big names (Miesha, for example)
Except if a new joiner becomes something big (Kennedy Freeman?), I see this division disappear within 2-3 years

That's the biggest problem right there. It's a very old division. In the top 15 there are only 2 women in their 20's. I mean Miesha Tate is still in the top 15. That's how bad the division is currently. I like WMMA but the Women's Bantamweight Division needs to die. Nunes and Harrison might still be around by the end of 2026 but Harrison can't keep cutting that weight for much longer, and there's nothing for Nunes after Harrison.

So then what? I mean the division is so bad one of the best fighters of the division is Julianna Pena. Pena became a champion twice when if she was in literally any other division she might not even be a top 10 fighter. Women are usually lighter overall and an argument can be made that instead of keeping WBW there would be more women fighters that could move to Atomweight instead.

Bellator had 145 for years. Nobody chooses 145 over 135.

pena wins the nunes trilogy, restores balance to the force

Open 105
Keep 115
Keep 125
Open 125

Problem solved. Girls can now fight at BW/FW without having to cut weight, we'd just see pena nunes and the other bigger WBW like Macy or Ketlan just fight without having to cut weight, Limit it to 160 if you want, and I expect majority of females will come in close to 152

There isn’t enough talent to sustain women’s 135 or 145. Nunes is already retired and I doubt she’ll stick around. Harrison probably only has a couple 135 weight cuts left at her age.

The UFC could do an openweight 135+ for occasional freakshow fights between huge women like Harrison or Gabby Garcia. But having actual women’s 135 and 145 divisions just dilutes cards with awful fights and worthless belts.

Thats why people are saying close 135. And reopen 145. Have all 135ers fight up ten pounds. Combine the divisions

Not happening, and it’s more likely FW will be added again. Instead of ditching BW.

No way FW comes back. Really not enough decent girls for it. PFL hired all the big girls for a few years and they were fun to watch, but so much worse at fighting than the lower weights.

They're way more likely to bring in AW before they bring back FW. They should have done AW years ago. There's heaps of good fighters there, and a decent number of SWs in the UFC that would be better suited for AW.
