The Dungeons and Dragons Megathread v2

Been playing this game since Ad&D

Fought my first dragon ever at lvl 13

.....

Prismatic spray...fail save...dragon gets plane shifted...

Feels..

Nice. What kind of dragon? Did it get any attacks off? Get any treasure from it?

Blue Dragon.. dunno age, but adult or older...lightning bolt fucked some shit up
..encountered it away from its lair in a possible different timeline (planeshifting and time jumps have us all kinds of fucked...) so got nothing...yet

Just had another awesome session. Will post about it later. Was at two failed death saving throws.

If anyone is looking to join an online game, check out our DM at Start Playing. Search for Riko Miyoko. He just started a Lost Mines of Phandelver game and runs quite a few other campaigns. We've played 62 sessions with him. Very reasonable prices compared to others. Uses Discord and Roll20. Tell him "Tungsten" sent you.

Hello natural 20s. Been a while since I posted an update. We've been questing to find our NPC's soul. Went into a dungeon in the Trollbark Forest and defeated the necromancer who had the soul. Now we're trying to get into what we think is a treasure room. Random dragonborn devil is there at the door. He can get us in but we'd have to sign a contract and allow him first pick of the goodies. Not sure about this.

Next long rest we'll level up to 8!

After months of hiatus we finally got to play our family game night D&D session. Continuing Forge of Fury and everyone advanced to level 4.

Some really fun role play combat this go around, which was supported by good dice rolls by players and poor ones by me as the DM.

Highlights was a successful deception check of an ogre by my fiancée’s son. Deceived them that he was there to help, so the ogre ordered him to empty the prisoners chamber pot and gave him the key. (He had previously entered the room disguised and threw a handful of rocks at the prisoners to establish his bad guy persona.)

He then managed to succeed in throwing the contents at the ogre’s face gaining them a round of blindness against the ogre. The kids love potty humor so they thought it was funny as shit (pun intended).

They managed to clear the upper floor and now I have to prep for the next level.

A local Barnes and Noble is going out of business so I managed to get Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, adventure and DM journals, cleric and arcane spell cards all for less than 60 bucks, which was awesome.

Been a while since I've updated. Can't even remember where I left off LOL. We played our 100th session last night. Sessions are 2 to 2.5 hours long. 'Twas fun.

The other fighter (son) and I arm wrestled in the Way Inn on our way back up to Waterdeep from the Trollbark Forest. I lost and had to sing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" on top of a table in the inn. Had to actually sing it in character so that was hilarious. Got hit in the face with a tankard.

My performance did get us something. I told the inn folk that I'd be back singing tomorrow night unless someone had a caravan heading north toward Waterdeep. Now we're on a caravan heading north. :D

We haven’t played on a long time. Haven’t had the chance and been super busy. Glad you are still playing

I’m running my first campaign ever. Same group of dudes I’ve known and played with for well over a decade. We are 3 4 sessions in, so far so good.

I’ve introduced a squirrel of holding to the team. (It’s a live, indestructible squirrel that also functions as a bag of holding.) and inside was an ancient coin purse with 3 magical coins. What they don’t know is the bag is a liches phylactery that They’re going to be tasked with destroying.

I got invited to a DnD game but I'm a total noob. Can I learn how to play as I go along or is it better to get a primer?

It's really easy to learn. 90% of the mechanics is rolling a d20 and hoping for the best. Try to learn the math on your character sheet, know that you are not at all limited in your options to what's on the character sheet, and don't be a dick to the DM or the other players.

Yep, spells get complicated.

A rouge isn't too hard either.
Sneak and stab
I would say it would depend on the subclass, I've seen new people struggle with when sneak attack applies (though a ranged rogue using Steady Aim makes it pretty simple)

My vote is definitely fighter, simplest features, usually the hardest to hit, so less likely to go down and need a new character too soon, and the subclasses offer a decent range of styles once you've picked up the basics. I still remember my dumb half-orc fighter becoming an eldritch knight because after two levels of watching the wizard work I wanted to try some spells

Or use DnDBeyond or a character app for your phone which does the math for you, once less thing to figure out

Yeah guess I didn't think about that, was more thinking the arch typical sneak, steal, lockpick.

Roll 20 is a sick app for doing the math for you as well once you figure out where to put the stats.

i finally started working on the outline for my first campaign as DM. going to be a 90s RetroFuturism/UsedFuture theme & setting in space. will be using the supplemental material from Dark Matter by Mage Hand Press as a guide, but the campaign story will be homebrewed

should be fun!

Using 5e? Another system might fit better

yeah, 5e. it’s the only way ik how to play. plus, the supplement i’m using is designed for 5e

Interesting. I wonder of WotC cares enough to get pissy over this. They had their own setting called Dark•Matter. It was last used in 2006 as a d20 Modern supplement, so it's been almost 20 years, but copyright doesn't just expire because you're not actively using it (that's trademarks, different thing).

Critical Role is still my favorite D&D show, but I just stumbled across Acquisitions Incorporated Season 2. Pretty good first episode. Anyone else watching?
