The Dungeons and Dragons Megathread v2

Has everyone here watched The Legend of Vox Machina?

This trailer does not do it justice. It's definitely worth watching.

That show is amazing. I knew about Critical Role, but hadn't bothered to try to catch up due to the staggering amount of time it would take too make it through even one campaign. I still haven't, but I've caught a couple of one-shots.

I played way back in the day, but not for over 15 years. I'm starting again, though, with a group of like-minded friends. Feels good to be back.

Good session last week. Playing again tonight.

DM splits the session since our bard (wife) is going back to Phandalin with our NPC ranger, Thyla Starr (Sildar's now rescued long lost love), and escorted by the tribe. They make it back to Phandalin to find the previous evil magic-user, Sahir, we encountered was holding Halia Thornton hostage in the Townmaster's Hall with Sildar in a prison cell. Bard does some spectacular negotiation and convinces Sahir otherwise, but we find out he was an illusion. Bastard. Thyla goes to the Stonehill Inn to rest. Bard gets Sildar out of prison. End of their session.

Our fighter son, my fighter, NPC paladin, Teef Splitta legendary orc, and his band trek to Icespire Peak. DM made a custom map. Very cool. Great music. We begin inching our way forward trying not to fall off the cliff. Suddenly we get pelted with arrows from above. We tell the paladin to turn off his Light spell. So now we're in pitch black and next to a cliff. We fasten each other to our climbing rope while our young fighter inches along the cliff wall. No more arrows because they can't see us. Was intense.

Eventually we reach what appears to be a structure of some sort. Light on. Skeletons shooting arrows from a higher position. We try to rush into the structure but we're still tied to each other so that ends up being hilarity. We make it inside. Detach the rope. We can see what appears to be creatures around the corner. Session ends.

Tonight we see how close we get to the dragon.

Played last night. We realize we're in the guard shack. Dispatch some willow wisps and skeletons. Cross the ice bridge which connects to Icespire Hold. Young fighter suggests we crawl across. DM tells us later that was a really good idea with the high winds and the bridge covered in ice. We get into a room with some gargoyle statues. I just knew they were coming alive and sure enough, they did. We throttled them rather easily.

Fighter son rolls a natural 20 when he listens at the exit door. Ends up finding two secret doors in the room as a result. One looks to go outside. The other has stairs leading down. Dragon perhaps? I don't have the Dragon of Icespire Peak module and don't want to spoil it for myself.

Session ends. Next week we head down the stairs.

DM uses Roll20 as the VTT. Asked him last night if there's a setting for fog of war to show us where we've been so we can figure out our way back, see where we haven't explored, etc. Basically everything is pitch black around us on the map except for what our players can see or any light we have from spells, lanterns, torches, etc. His response:

"There is but I purposely turn it off. I like my players to get lost."

I bought graph paper. :D

Ranger in our group has a strange obsession with chalk early on as a joke...

A month or two ago was Roaming around some void paths/maze, Necro tells the fucker to put it to good use marking our turns at intersections...

DM gave him a point of inspiration (basically a free re-roll and take the higher)

Used said point a week or two ago to when 60pts of damage on a disentigrate spell wasn't enough to kill in one shot (Monk had a turn to live) 74 points on the reroll was though...

Metagame it and use the draw tool on the map to mark your progress

Preorder available on Amazon today, so yep got it. Looks amazing, go check it out.

Plus, 10 Spelljammer campaign monsters available free on D&D Beyond as of yesterday, all you need is an account (I think).

Killed our first dragon gents. Cryovain is no more.

We get to the rooftop and he is waiting. Breath attacks us all. Drops two of the orcs. Deals 50 damage. Fighter son and I save and take 25 damage. We would have been out if we took the full damage. We can only see 10 feet because of the wind and blizzard. Cryovain is in the darkness. We met a specter earlier in the hold who agreed to help us. She flies in and illuminates the area for us. Then it's on.

I have an epic first attack round:

12 + 4 menacing = 16 damage.

7 + 5 menacing = 12 damage.

Action Surge.

Natural freaking 20. 8 doubled to 16 + 5 str/prof bonus = 21 then 5 menacing doubled to 10 = 31 total damage. BOOM.

And another natural freaking 20. 3 doubled to 6 + 5 str/prof bonus = 11 then 6 menacing doubled to 12 = 23 damage.

82 damage total.

Cryovain has a mate. Another white dragon. Teef Splitta the legendary orc appears and goes one-on-one with the other dragon. Cryovain is seriously bloodied and takes to the sky. He flies around in the darkness waiting for his breath attack to recharge. We spread out and wait.

Cryovain dives from the sky, breath attacks our fighter son, and freaking crashes through the stone rooftop taking them both down into the room below. DM tells our son it's now a one-on-one battle with Cryovain to the death. Cryovain is on death's door. Son attacks and hears:

How do you want to do this?

We erupt in victory yelling!

Son receives the title of Dragon Slayer.

The loot. Dragon's Wrath axe named Oathkeeper. Very powerful weapon. Will identify it when we get back to Phandalin.

Legendary orc keeps the treasure horde as we agreed.

War Pick of Warning. Adamantine plate mail armor.

Son and wife level to 6. I'll level to 6 once my soul is restored.

Session ends for the dragon slayers.

Well we put the DM in a conundrum.

After the jail break 2 weeks ago (I guess he thought we'd comply) our party went on a rampage through a few rooms of the compound (with 4 zombies.. Necro!!!!) before stumbling on the room full of guys we weren't supposed to defeat...

Barbarian rage (92 fucking damage in one full attack!!!), empowered fireball (shit roll only 48 dmg begore save for half), multiple sleep arrows, and several pasted and burning bodies later and the DM was forced to reconsider his whole plan...

The cult leader begging us to spare her children had a better effect on us...

Now we got free reign of the compound..barring some buildings which we will totally not break into next session....

Dude, 92 damage in one attack? LOL. That's awesome. What was the DM's plan before you destroyed everything?

I think we were supposed to sneak into the compound..

Fuck that.. we're badasses...so we beat down the doors...

...cult leader asks for peace, offers us rooms that turn out to be jail cells...guessing we were going to get escaped...fuck that...kill the guards, animate their corpses to serve us and let's do the whole compound...

...get hit with major mojo...cult leader begs for peace again...get access to some areas of the compound..scam guards out of gold on an Arm Wrestling match with Trog...before match starts Monk hits Trog in face to hype him up (induce rage and scam other guts who made bet) ...doesn't specify non lethal dmg, DM rolls with it and states is physical...Trog Rages, wins contest and back hands Monk across room...much party laughter...

I could not find anything on a search, and I'm not going back thought this entire thread and the previous one (or the TV thread, either), so at the risk of repeating something I'll just ask:

Anyone else watch the Critical Role: Vox Machina cartoon on Amazon Prime? It's fantastic.

I backed it on kickstarter. It was so worth it.

Been a Critical Role fan since season 1.

Yup. Watched all of VM on Prime. Watched all of CR Campaign 1. Stopped Campaign 2 to start watching Campaign 3. Currently on Campaign 3 episode 18 I think. Love that show.
