The Disappearance of Shelly Miscavige (a Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath thread)

Anyway, it was his divorced father who got into it. Shortly after, they moved to L.A. and I think he lived in that big blue Scientology building there in L.A. Not sure how, but 6 months to a year later, they got out. My friend said he absolutely hated it, he was 12-13 at the time, and they had him cleaning bathrooms and scrubbing toilets

That's the impression that I get, that they often recruit people and then turn those people into sources of free labor.

As far as I can understand, it basically goes like this:

1. Recruit new people into Scientology and charge them for courses

2. Recruit some of the main body into the Sea Org and other special areas of the church to provide (mostly) free labor to support the church

3. Recruit more people and therefore make more money

So basically they make a shitload of money on these overpriced courses they offer. And very little of this money has to go toward supporting the infrastructure of the church, because that is largely being taken care of by people who work virtually for free. So there's just money everywhere.

The problem now of course is that the word is out on Scientology and, from what I understand, membership is plummeting. A lot of people are leaving, while very few new people are joining up.

Yeah, gotta be hard now controlling what their members see. Wonder what their policy is on cellphones/smartphones.

I know they like to control internet access, or so I think, at their compounds, but so many people have smartphones now. Curiosity must get the better of them to where they're googling 'Scientology" and getting hit with harsh articles

Just found this article from less than a month ago (dated Dec. 15, 2016):

CLAIM: ‘Frail’ looking Shelly Miscavige spotted near Scientology compound in California

A couple of excerpts:

For a few days, we have been communicating with a woman we’re going to call Rachel. We know Rachel’s real name, and a lot more about her besides. Everything she’s told us about herself and her husband has checked out. But because they fear retaliation for telling us what they know (and they say that it’s already happening, more about that below), we’ve agreed not to use their real names.

Rachel and her family live less than two miles from the Church of Spiritual Technology headquarters near Twin Peaks, California — the 33-acre super-secret compound where we believe Scientology leader David Miscavige has kept his wife Shelly stashed away for the last 11 years.

The first incident happened in the first week of December, 2015. Rachel says they were at Lake Drive Hardware, just a few blocks from Lake Gregory, picking up some Christmas trees that had been donated to the place where she works. Rachel’s work involves helping people recovering from alcohol and substance abuse problems, and she says it’s that background which made her take note when a woman walked into the store.

“She was a thin, smaller woman, escorted by two men,” Rachel says. “Disheveled. Almost like a drug addict, or like she was homeless.”

The woman, whom Rachel now believes was Shelly Miscavige, looked all of her 55 years, had long, stringy graying hair, and appeared “frail.”

The two men with her looked younger; Rachel estimates they were in their 30s. “They seemed to be leading her, like you would someone who was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It was awkward.”

She apologized for not noticing more about the young men. “My attention was never on them. My attention was on her. This was what I do for a living, work with people who are in that kind of shape. And I had a thought that this woman was not supposed to be there. It was disturbing.”

Four months later, around April 2016, the same thing happened. This time, Rachel says she was at Goodwin & Sons Market, a few blocks away from the hardware store, when the same woman came in, again escorted by two younger men. The woman had the same kind of appearance as the previous time, but Rachel didn’t notice if it was the same two young men.

When Rachel later saw the 20/20 special while she was convalescing, she realized that the frail looking woman was Shelly Miscavige. She then began researching more about Scientology and who Shelly was.

In one of the show episodes, Ron Miscaviage (David's father) said it took one Google search to fuck him up. Apparently he received a Kindle from David, but David forgot to deactivate its Internet capabilities. Once Ron realized he had access to the Internet--which was a big deal, because no one has access--then he Googled "L Ron Hubbard" (if I remember correctly) and just started reading.

That was the beginning of the end for him.

My understanding is that at the compounds the Internet is tightly restricted. And for those regular rank-and-file members who live in the real world, they've been heavily conditioned to not believe anything they hear because enemies of the church are trying to stop their good work.

I got the impression they did what they wanted behind closed doors . . . meaning they'd physically restrain or assault you as they deemed necessary.

I think they physically assault you, but only if they think they can cover it up.

If they put you in a prison and restrained you they would be risking serious felony charges, and if the church is good at one thing, it's staying just inside that criminal line.

I could be wrong though. I'd love to know more from Leah or even someone who has been kept.

I'm surprised they would allow her to leave the compound at all.

Not sure if any others in this thread grew up in Toronto during the 80s. The Scientology church, here in T.O. was a decent sized building. The main floor was basically a book store, I guess to peddle their book Dianetics, then the upper floors were the admin stuff of the church. I had been in there a few times with my friend.

Probably wouldn't be able to just walk in now I assume. Probably have security at the front entrances. But back then I had walked in several times with my buddy. He would chat with his dad then we would leave.

One time, they had a meeting/promotion to recruit new members, and I happened to sit in on one since my friend's father was part of the organizing for this. It was all the stuff you see in Leah's doc about how much good they're doing, and the changes to your life.

Afterwards I remember a woman chatting with me about my life. I was a typical 12-13 year old, liked video games, sleeping till noon etc. Anyway, I specifically remember her telling me something about how lazy or sloth-like that lifestyle is, and how Scientology can help with that. And for myself, I remember thinking, damn I study my ass off at school, I'm doing well enough and don't think I need this lady telling me I'm lazy. You get that gut-instinct of a bad feeling so I left. Don't think you can actively recruit a kid anyway, but this lady tried to push Scientology on me

Anyway, I kept being friends with this guy till high-school, then we drifted apart. I went on to University, did 8 years, and got my DDS degree, and run my own dental practice. Guess laziness pays off! Side note: L. Ron's teeth bug the shit out of me, whenever they show him talking, all I see is his horrible teeth.

Yeah.

Of course it's possible that it wasn't Shelly at all, and that the witness is mistaken. But provided she is correct, it does seem strange that she would be seen in everyday spots like a hardware store and a market.

Considering how eager they are to recruit, I'm honestly surprised that Scientology never adopted the missionary practices of Mormons and started sending people door-to-door.

Alright first of all, when you posted above, "Frail Shelly" I immediately thought of the one true frail Shelly Duvall.

Continuity+Polaroid+of+actress+Shelley+Duvall+on+the+Apartment+Bathroom+set+of+The+Shining..jpg

Now lets just suppose that Shelly Miscavige has the frail countenance of Shelly Duvall. Some people just look tired as they age. Then again, if Shelly is fine then why will she not speak up after 11 years? She surely knows of all the rumors, why not just sit down and give and interview and explain wtf is going on?

Here is my reasoning: The Church of Scientology would want, practically demand, that she clear the air because it looks bad for Scientology. They are balls to the walls serious about keeping their name in the clear, right? Yet she doesn't and they don't. This is very interesting from a conspiracy theorist/armchair detective perspective. The fact that the church doesn't clear the air is IMO, a huge piece of evidence pointing toward more a more sinister reality because Scientology is all about good PR.

Then again, why would she not ask for help when allowed in public? Doesn't matter if she is escorted by two men. When she raises the alarm the police are going to be called.

Conclusion: Its possible in some way she is so brainwashed by the cult of Scientology that she willingly subjects herself to the imprisonment.

That's a cool BTS pic of The Shining

Did Shelly/David ever have kids? Not sure if it was mentioned, I"m assuming no

O.K. first of all, remind me not to use your dental services. That avatar is pretty scandalous. I think we should show it to your patients. Also, that Duvall pic BTS shows her looking pretty ragged, which she would have been for the movie, but she claimed Stanley Kubrick mentally tortured her to put her on edge for that movie. She later claimed it made her hair fall out.

Are you aware of her mental health issues, its pretty sad.

Check this out.

Never knew that, kinda scary.

Yea I had no idea she had gone downhill so bad. She thinks the Sheriff of Nottingham is after her and claims she has seen Robin Williams since his death.

Nothing like putting a mentally ill person on TV to profit off of their misfortune.

Well yea that was the accusation against Dr. Phil. We live in that sort of time period though right? People plaster their own lives willingly all over Facebook. Its to the point where they take pics of the food they are eating just to post that online. I find this entire generation kinda disturbing. If they so much as run to the store for a 6-pack they feel the need to Tweet that out.

Dr. Phil should have known better because he is a professional. Gotta get them ratings though if you want a new house and a new boat.

I'd say all of that is at least logically coherent.

I definitely think that being brainwashed is a HUGE part of her predicament. She was born into Scientology and has been with the Sea Org since she was 12. Practically every day of her life has been spent within the organization, not just mentally but also physically. She has known no other life. To top it off, she is married to the organization's leader.

Look at someone like Elizabeth Smart. She was reportedly seen in public and made no attempts to escape or notify anybody, even though she was only gone a total of 9 months. That's how quickly her captor was able to get to her.

Dude, what the FUCK? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HER?!

That is insane!

And so sad. I hate to see that's how she's ended up. That is super fucked up.

I have to admit though, she got me with the Sheriff of Nottingham. That shit is funny.

Yea its weird seeing her in that condition. I read an article that said she enjoyed playing Olive Oyl better than any other character. So she gets savaged by Kubrick on the set of the Shining and almost has a nervous breakdown then her next roll was as Olive Oyl in Popeye, an animated character in the land of children's make believe.

Olive_Oyl_4.jpg

So then you get this thing where she thinks the Sheriff of Nottingham is after her and he was the villain in 1973's Robin Hood.

I'm not saying Kubrick did permanent damage to her but its a little weird multiple sources say Kubrick savaged her to get a great performance, for example they did the bar scene 125 times, and then she slowly regresses into the make believe world of children's stories. Its a sad thing to see.
