The death of the serious mma fan

Bullshit. Spend any time on sherdog and you will see that all sides of almost any argument is interested in more than just the fighting aspect of MMA. To pretend otherwise is disingenuous and downright vain.

Bullshit, you don't know that. Have you visited any other MMA forums?

It's been kind of funny to see how people all bitched about the main event being that pointless rematch... Now they want it to happen again because of all this non-sense.

I never wanted it to happen & I hope it still doesn't... Defend that belt or go away, Conor.

Long term die hard fan and have to say i now view it as sports entertainment instead of a sport.

Largely due to the Diaz rematch while tj didn't get one. CM punk is helping either.

It no longer feels like the quest to find the best.

With this latest publicity stunt for UFC 200 it's now undeniable that the UFC has abandoned the serious mixed martial arts aficionado in favor of the casual fan who needs professional wrestling style drama in order to remain interested. I guess it makes sense...why should anyone be interested in this pointless LW rematch at WW that has absolutely no relevance in regards to title contention? Without some sort of contrived emotional string plucking people might just start to realize how dumb this fight is.

It's becoming increasingly embarrassing to admit that I am an MMA fan.

Thanks UFC.
I'm a die-hard MMA purist, and a 13+ year hardcore MMA fan.

I don't even have favorite fighters anymore, and I don't give a shit who wins or loses -- I just want to see good fights.

And the quality of fights I'm seeing in the UFC these days beats the shit out those of any org in any era. It's not close.

So why does anything else matter? A real "mixed martial arts aficionado" is going to be stoked as long as they keep putting on these epic cards. If you aren't into the other shit, ignore it -- it doesn't have any effect on the actual fights.

The funny thing is the casuals I know are sick of fake rematches and Conor drama too

When do you think it stopped being about fights and more about promotion and publicity?

Are you surprised mother trucker ?
You remind me those no life players that shit talk about casual players in video games.
But like in video games, the casuals bring the money and the supposed serious guys play thanks to the casual

Do you wear a fedora too?

They tricked you. It was never the quest to find the best. There is a reason no HW can hold onto the title for more than a few defenses. There is a reason we have only ever had 2 guys hold the title in more than one weight class. There is no such thing is the best. All we really know is who wins between two guys on a given night with a given set of circumstances which are rarely perfect.

This is exactly how I am. I don't have favorite fighters. I don't care who wins or loses. I just want to see good fights. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm indifferent to narrative. If something can add my excitement, whether it is genuine animosity, a dominant champ who lost and is trying to get his belt back, a good rubbermatch, a good underdog story, etc. But at the end of the day, the actual fight, the meat and potatoes, is what matters the most. The other stuff can easily be ignored.

You don't like what McGregor has to say? Don't listen to his interviews. You don't like Dana? Don't watch the pressers. You don't care about prospects? Don't watch prelims, only tune in for PPV main cards and UFN main events. It's pretty easy to pick and choose what you take in if you want. Honestly, other than JMMA/Pride rules/fighting in a ring, there is something there for everyone.

I've been watching MMA for 34 years. I was at the dojo when Gracie got his balls grabbed, and i'll be here long after you filthy casual just bleeders lose interest.

UFC has always been this way. It's an entertainment business pretending to promote a "legitmate sport" in MMA, but really just care about filling seats. It will continue to get more WWE'esque because that is effective and makes the company money. I could care less because more money = more talent and there's great MMA to be had right now. Unfortunately, we have to endear how they appeal to the masses.

It's what it is, it makes sense to cater to the casuals. More viewers = more money. If MMA never got beyond the hardcore fans, the future of MMA wouldn't be as bright. Shit's not that serious.

I don't know where you live but in Scottsdale Arizona EVERY bar, including the high-end ones, show the big UFC fights that have either Ronda or Conor.
I'm in the GTA in Canada.

There are justifications for streaming that make sense to me, but this isn't one of them. You think it is low quality, so you watch but you don't pay? Lol. It's no skin off my back whether you pay or not, but you have no moral integrity in this regard. Fifty bucks is an inexpensive price to be an honest man.

There's so much LOL in this post its almost amazing. Quite clearly, like many other people, I watch the fights I want to see and the fights I dont. And just fucking LOL at moral integrity in regards to the Mafia owned company that makes huge profits while sharing very little with the actual fighters in the cage. Yeah, Dana White is the epitome of moral integrity LOL Uh Reebok much?

The most priceless part is you saying I have no moral integrity for streaming a UFC when you have probably been streaming music, television and movies for years. lol Oh, and btw, if you actually havent.... you're an even bigger idiot.

There really is only one, you are home alone on a Saturday night and stuck on your computer.

For some reason, I think you're trying to make that sound like an insult but it just kind of makes you look stupid. Not every person who watches MMA is 20 years old.

I am home on Saturday nights usually but thats because I have two small children and work 60 hrs a week, so its probably a better idea that I'm home being a father to them rather than going out to some bar to hang around a bunch of douchebag college kids that can't hold their booze and watch a UFC that I can't even hear.

No I was being serious, the only reason one would stream it is because someone was watching by themselves at home. There are many great reasons to be stuck watching at home on a Saturday night, having a family is a perfect example. If you are watching at a bar or with friends you would spring to get it on the big screen in HD, if you are home alone I get watching it on a computer.

Are you really rationalizing not paying for PPVs because the UFC doesn't pay fighters enough? Because it's pretty clear that fighter pay tends to scale with how many PPVs they sell. Which is why MM gets paid less than McGregor.

Anyway, as I made clear before, I'm not losing sleep over whether or not you stream PPVs, but your poor justifications deserve to be pointed out.

I agree that this situation is out of hand, but the UFC is actually the only, and I mean ONLY, party involved who is acting professional. They have their contracts and rules and they acted accordingly when they were not met by their fighter. They haven't been the ones tweeting random crap. Dana and the UFC said that he's off the card and he's off the card. They have not being playing this up at all.

Check out the 197 post fight press conference or the big UFC 200/international fight week conference from Friday. I think you'd be surprised how professionally Dana and co are actually acting.

That being said, the media, McGregor, and McGregor's camp are the ones who continue to perpetuate this thing. It's clear that McGregor and his camp think that they can get what they want by airing their dirty laundry in the public eye. This whole thing is a black eye for the sport and for McGregor and his camp.
